Chapter 232 - Chapter 14: I'm Actually Doing It This Time

"I'm going to do something now!"

"Then do it."

"I'm really going to do something now!"

"Then do it."

"I'm really, really going to do something now!"

"Then do it."

"I'm really, really, really-"

"Are you going to do something or not?" Shaw felt like he was being toyed with.

"I really don't want to," Morin muttered. "I don't know how much force I should use."

What if he accidentally broke the homework he had carefully prepared for Charles and Erik?

This wasn't something he could just print out again.

It was living homework.

Once it was gone, it was gone.

Shaw's ability was strong.

He could even absorb the output of a nuclear reactor, though that was already close to his limit.

As for what Morin could do-

Just the few suitcase nukes sitting in his system space were enough to blow Shaw apart instantly.

The burst energy from a direct nuclear detonation was on a completely different level from the steady output of a reactor.

Setting one off on Shaw wouldn't be difficult.

Shaw could absorb energy.

But that was all.

He had no enhanced speed.

No enhanced strength.

Nothing else.

If Morin wanted to, he had hundreds of ways to erase him on the spot.

Removing the helmet and using telepathy.

Setting a one-second nuclear detonation and teleporting away.

Pick any method.

The problem wasn't killing him.

The problem was defeating him without crushing his confidence and turning him into a terrified mouse hiding in a hole.

That wouldn't work.

If the homework hid itself, it stopped being homework.

It wouldn't test anything.

A qualified teacher had to maintain the right level of difficulty.

Morin fell silent, thinking seriously.

It seemed he really had to act.

Then-

His gaze shifted.

An idea formed.

"Alright," Morin said at last. "I'm really going to do something now."

"If you don't hurry up, I will," Shaw said impatiently.

He still had to rush to the Soviet Union to "talk" with a general about missiles in Cuba.

"Sigh. I didn't want to do this either," Morin said.

Then he vanished.

Shaw's eyes widened.

He reacted.

And didn't.

He saw Morin disappear.

He felt his head suddenly become lighter.

Cooler.

But he failed to react in time.

He couldn't grab the helmet leaving his head.

Even if he had, it wouldn't have mattered.

His strength was only slightly above average.

Compared to Morin, he wasn't even an ant.

"See?" Morin reappeared in the same spot, now holding Shaw's helmet.

"This is why I didn't want to act. A problem my students have to struggle with is too easy for me. There's no challenge at all."

"What... what is this?" Shaw's voice shook.

"You have two abilities?"

"I already told you," Morin said calmly. "I'm not a mutant. My abilities depend on what I want to use."

"Why do you never believe me? I've been telling the truth this whole time."

He examined the helmet without even looking at Shaw.

Meteorite material.

The universal explanation.

Magical metal? Meteorite.

Special properties? Meteorite.

The helmet's traits were intrinsic to the material.

A natural magnetic field.

It blocked psychic energy from passing through.

Telepaths couldn't sense or control the wearer.

But it had side effects.

It blocked internal projection as well.

The wearer couldn't emit psychic energy.

And prolonged exposure meant the brain was constantly bathed in a strong magnetic field.

No wonder everyone who wore it turned into a villain.

Toxic, indeed.

"What are you going to do?" Shaw asked stiffly.

He knew he had no chance.

Morin had already demonstrated telepathy.

Without the helmet, Shaw was helpless.

He couldn't absorb psychic energy.

Regret washed over him.

He remembered Morin's earlier words.

If only he had left then.

"I've said this many times," Morin said, casually pocketing the helmet.

"And you still don't listen."

The pocket was barely ten centimeters wide.

The helmet vanished into it.

To Shaw, the sight was horrifying.

"You have space abilities too?!" Shaw blurted out.

"I told you... forget it," Morin sighed.

There was no point explaining.

He needed to work.

The homework couldn't be destroyed.

So he chose the simplest solution.

Fast.

Effective.

He directly altered the memories of Shaw, the Red Devil, and Riptide.

They would believe the mission had succeeded.

They would obediently return to the submarine and continue their roles.

A boss should act like a boss.

Not wander around like a street thug.

"What do you-" Shaw began.

His eyes went blank.

The Red Devil and Riptide followed.

No one left could resist telepathy.

"Wait, I-" Salvador tried to speak.

Morin didn't even look at her.

Her eyes emptied as well.

The four moved together.

The three placed their hands on the Red Devil.

His teleportation ability had massive range.

Global range.

Low consumption.

As long as they held on, they could leave together.

"Teacher!" Raven called out.

"Salvador, she-"

"I told you," Morin said evenly. "I won't interfere with your choices."

"You have the right to choose."

"And with me, there is no regret."

"She gave up the right to be my student. That's good for me."

"I won't stop her."

"She chose Shaw. I won't stop that either."

"But-"

"I'll teach you something, Raven," Morin interrupted.

"Once you betray someone, it becomes easier."

"Second time. Third time."

"It never stops."

"Never forgive a traitor."

"If she betrayed you once for benefit, she'll do it again."

"Do you really want a ticking bomb beside you?"

Raven fell silent.

"You're all adults," Morin said, waving his hand.

"You're responsible for your choices."

The Red Devil activated his ability.

In an instant, Shaw and the others appeared in the Soviet Union.

"Wait here," Shaw said, memories intact but altered.

"I'll go in first."

He believed everything had gone as planned.

Salvador had joined him.

The others had refused.

He straightened his clothes.

After checks, searches, and questioning, he entered a massive hall with a world map covered in markers.

"Alright," the Soviet general said. "What do you want?"

"If the Soviet Union were to place missiles somewhere the U.S. can't control," Shaw said, placing a marker on Cuba.

"...Do you think I'm an idiot?" the general snapped, removing it.

"That's declaring war!"

"I think you'll change your mind," Shaw replied calmly.

"Or maybe I should call the KGB," the general said, reaching for the phone.

"Hello, KGB, I-"

Red smoke exploded into the room.

The Red Devil appeared.

Along with Riptide and Salvador.

They smiled.

The general didn't.

"...Never mind," he said slowly, hanging up.

He understood.

This guest meant trouble.

...

Back with Morin.

"Alright," he said. "Let's continue studying."

A teacher never missed a chance to help students grow.

The students were miserable.

But they didn't dare resist.

They couldn't beat him.

Worse-

What he taught actually worked.

It was useful.

Convincing.

That made it even more painful.

They were learning things they knew were valuable.

The process was just torture.

If they'd grown up in China, maybe they'd handle it.

But they hadn't.

At that moment, a strong psychic signal reached Morin.

Ding. Your friend Charles has initiated a telepathic call.

Morin raised a magnetic field around himself before answering.

Caution was habit.

"What is it?" he asked.

"Teacher!" Charles said urgently. "Shaw-Sebastian Shaw-is going to attack our base!"

"I know," Morin replied. "He's already been there."

"...Already?" Charles froze.

"Is Shaw dead?"

Morin: "?"

The logic made sense.

But it was still irritating.

"You're worried about the enemy instead of your teacher?" Morin said coldly.

"Homework. Ten times more."

"Ten times. Understand?"

"What?!" Charles was stunned.

"Hahaha!" Erik's laughter echoed through the link.

Morin heard it clearly.

"Erik Lehnsherr. You too. Ten times."

"What?! Teacher, wait, I wasn't laughing at you!"

"I know," Morin said calmly.

"But you're a team."

"So you're punished together."

"Fair."

Fair my foot.

Charles and Erik screamed internally.

They didn't even dare cry out loud.
