Chapter 231 - Chapter 13: When the Truth Sounds Like a Lie

"Normal people shouldn't be involved in this kind of war," Morin said calmly.

His fingers moved slightly.

A complex magnetic field formed around his head.

Then, an already massive psychic energy surged outward-amplified by the magnetic field to a terrifying degree.

This was a self-sufficient method.

Unlike Charles, who had Erik to assist him, Morin had to construct his own magnetic field to amplify his telepathy, much like Cerebro.

He could have done what came next with telepathy alone.

But that would have been exhausting.

If there was a way to save energy and gain more power, there was no reason not to use it.

The telepathic field expanded.

In an instant, the overwhelming psychic pressure caused every normal human in the secret research base to lose consciousness.

They were removed from the base by various means.

At the same time, only a few remained.

The Red Devil, already subdued and lying motionless.

Shaw, protected by a helmet forged from a special meteorite that blocked telepathy.

And Riptide, who was unleashing his power-summoning a tornado to tear apart the Cerebro machine on the lawn.

Even if Cerebro was useless now, Morin wasn't the type to let someone destroy things freely.

"You can't destroy public property," Morin said lightly.

"Violators will be fined."

Then his psychic pressure dropped.

Riptide wasn't like Emma.

He didn't have a diamond form.

He didn't have a telepathy-blocking helmet.

He was no different from the Red Devil.

So his brain was taken over instantly.

The tornado destabilized and collapsed.

Riptide lost control, flew backward into the courtyard, and slammed into the ground beside the Red Devil.

He didn't move again.

"..."

On the other side, Shaw frowned.

He had entered with confidence, fully prepared to make a dramatic entrance.

The plan was simple.

Let the soldiers attack him.

Then release all the absorbed energy and kill everyone who dared offend "God."

But...

There hadn't been a single person.

Not even a sound.

"...Did the Red Devil kill everyone?" Shaw muttered.

The thought passed briefly through his mind.

He didn't dwell on it and continued forward.

"Turn left. Then go straight."

Morin's voice suddenly echoed through the broadcast system.

Shaw raised an eyebrow and followed the directions.

Overconfidence made bold decisions easy.

"Who are you?"

"You'll know when you get here."

"Where are Azazel and Riptide?"

"They're fine," Morin replied calmly.

"They just lost a few teeth. Don't worry."

"...Are you a mutant?"

Shaw walked through the corridor and reached the courtyard.

What he saw made him pause.

No corpses.

Just his two lieutenants lying silently on the ground.

"I am not," Morin said flatly.

Even with Erik's electromagnetism and Charles's telepathy, Morin couldn't be classified as a mutant.

The system altered his body and granted him abilities.

But it had nothing to do with the X-gene.

The human body was an endless treasure.

Genes capable of supporting special abilities were not limited to the X-gene alone.

So in essence-

He had mutant-like powers.

But he was not a mutant.

The result looked the same.

The nature was completely different.

"...Come on," Shaw smiled.

"That's nothing to be ashamed of, my friend."

In Shaw's eyes, Morin was obviously a mutant.

Just one unwilling to admit it.

Morin: "..."

Did nobody believe the truth anymore?

What was an honest person supposed to do?

"Humans are weak. We are strong," Shaw continued.

"Mutants are the future. We'll replace humans as a new species."

He tried to recruit Morin.

Anyone who could suppress Azazel and Riptide so easily had to be extremely powerful.

That part wasn't wrong.

Morin was strong.

Just too strong.

Seeing Morin remain silent, Shaw assumed he was making progress and pressed on.

As he spoke, he stepped closer.

"My friend, the revolution is about to begin."

Raven and the others walked out behind Morin.

Shaw grew even more animated.

"When humans discover our existence, we'll all face a choice. Be enslaved-or rule the world."

"You can choose anything," he said confidently.

"But if you refuse, you're an enemy."

"So choose. Fight the humans who despise you, or join us and live as kings."

"Stop there," Morin said, raising a hand.

"Don't come any closer."

Then, without turning around, he spoke to Raven and the others.

"I am not a mutant. You are."

"I won't participate in your battles, and I won't interfere with your choices."

"But as my students, you have the right to choose."

"Yes or no. That's up to you."

Shaw frowned.

Morin ignored him.

So Shaw turned to the others.

But after days of Morin's teaching-and a healthy dose of ideological guidance-how could they be swayed by Shaw's speech?

Morin had already explained Charles and Erik's path.

Even without seeing the future, they could tell.

That path minimized conflict.

Minimized war.

Minimized death.

Aside from a few violent lunatics, no one liked war.

People wanted results.

If a path existed that offered better results with less sacrifice, why wouldn't they choose it?

No one responded.

Shaw: "..."

This was becoming uncomfortable.

He glanced at the Red Devil and Riptide lying on the ground.

Then he smiled.

"What is your ability?" Shaw asked calmly.

"It depends on what I want to use," Morin replied.

"I suggest you think carefully," Shaw said, suppressing his irritation.

Without knowing Morin's ability, he didn't dare act rashly.

His energy absorption was powerful.

But it wasn't invincible.

If Morin's power countered it perfectly...

And Morin still refused to answer.

"Damn it," Shaw thought.

"This guy's experienced. He won't tell me."

Without information, he'd have to test it directly.

That meant risk.

"I told you," Morin said casually, glancing around.

"Your choices aren't my concern."

Then his gaze lingered briefly on Salvador.

An idea surfaced.

He had been annoyed with her for a while.

According to the original sequence of events, this was a good moment.

He had been debating whether to nudge her thoughts slightly-

"...I'll go with you," Salvador said suddenly.

"Good job!" Morin nearly blurted out.

He had worried whether interfering would make him an accomplice.

Instead, she volunteered.

That solved the problem.

Morin looked at her with clear approval.

Smart.

If you hadn't stepped out, I wouldn't have had a good excuse.

"Excellent," Shaw said, relieved.

"Anyone else?"

The moment the words left his mouth, Shaw regretted them.

Silence followed.

Everyone stared at him like he was an idiot.

"Alright," Morin waved his hand.

"Take them and go."

"You're the objective I've prepared for my students. I won't steal you."

"Go do what you need to do."

"Get something to eat."

"...Thank you?" Shaw hesitated.

He didn't understand the cultural implication of eating before setting off.

Morin released his control over the Red Devil and Riptide.

Then he gestured for Raven and the others to head back.

"Let's go."

"Time to study."

Raven and the others: "!!!"

Even now?

"His ability is mind control!" Riptide suddenly shouted as he regained freedom.

"Wait!" Shaw called out.

"So you control minds..." Shaw's expression twisted into a sinister smile.

Everything suddenly made sense to him.

That was why Morin hadn't acted earlier.

That was why he claimed he wouldn't interfere.

He was afraid.

Shaw understood it all.

Or so he thought.

"You tried to control me," Shaw said confidently, stepping forward,

"but it didn't work. So you gave up and tried to scare me off."

Riptide's shout had sealed it.

"See this helmet?" Shaw tapped his head.

"The Soviets made it. It blocks all psychic interference."

He took another step closer.

"Now that your greatest weapon is useless-choose."

"Submit and serve me."

"Or become my enemy."

"Sigh..." Morin sighed.

"Teacher, go!" Alex shouted.

"I'll hold him off!"

That only reinforced Shaw's confidence.

"Are you stupid," Morin looked at Riptide helplessly,

"or are you doing this on purpose?"

"Huh?" Riptide froze.

The energy around him dissipated.

He looked genuinely wronged.

I was covering your retreat...

Why are you scolding me?

He nearly cried.

But Alex was too handsome.

That image didn't quite land.

"Are you an idiot?" Raven yanked Alex back.

"How could the teacher only have telepathy?"

"Oh... right," Alex scratched his head.

"Hahaha!" Shaw laughed loudly.

"Stop acting! I've seen through you!"

"Your acting is terrible."

He was convinced.

Alex's first shout was real.

The correction was a lie.

Morin's earlier words only added to the misunderstanding.

A chain of coincidences locked Shaw into his delusion.

Morin only had telepathy.

And it didn't work on him.

"I already told you," Morin said, turning back.

"You're the homework I've prepared for my students."

"After they finish training, you'll test their learning."

"So for now, leave."

"Go do what you want."

"And wait."

"No matter what you say, I won't believe you," Shaw sneered.

"Your lies have too many holes."

Morin: "..."

So it really was true.

Nobody believed the truth anymore.

"And even if you're telling the truth," Shaw continued slowly,

"your words make me very angry."

"So taking their teacher for a little revenge isn't too much, is it?"

"Sigh..." Morin sighed again.

"In this world..."

"You're uneducated, so you don't understand that good advice is hard to hear."

"I don't blame you."

"But if you don't leave, I'll have to take action."

"Uneducated?" Shaw laughed contemptuously.

He spread his arms and stopped two meters away.

"Then go ahead."

"Try something."
