"Then let's do it," Erik said after thinking for a moment, finally agreeing to Charles's request.
"Open your mind."
"I can't get in unless you allow it?"
"I could force it," Charles replied, "but this at least proves I'm polite."
"If I remember correctly, you went straight in the first time we met."
"That was an emergency. Different situation," Charles shot back.
Their exchange made Moira look at them strangely.
What kind of ridiculous tiger-wolf words were these?
Even though she understood what they meant, it was still far too easy to misunderstand.
"Did you feel anything?"
"No. Are you inside already?"
"I'm not influencing your thoughts," Charles said irritably. "I'm sharing knowledge. Use your abilities according to it."
"Wait... let me check," Erik frowned.
Almost immediately, he found a massive, complex block of knowledge in his mind.
It was something he had never studied.
Yet he understood it completely.
"Found it."
Following the information, Erik began to manipulate electromagnetism.
For the first time, he wasn't relying on instinct.
He adjusted magnetic fields one by one, assembling them into a complex yet orderly composite field.
Then he wrapped it around Charles's head.
"This is incredible," Charles said.
He released a strand of psychic energy and felt it amplified countless times, nearly reaching his normal full output.
The effect was astonishing.
"Of course," Erik said with a faint smile.
"Who do you think I am?"
"Yes, yes, you're the greatest," Charles replied. "Magneto-what do you think of that nickname?"
After confirming the effect, Charles released all his psychic energy.
Channeled through the magnetic structure Erik created, it achieved the same effect as Cerebro-
No.
Even better.
In an instant, he seized control of every Soviet soldier surrounding the villa.
Without Erik's cooperation, this would have taken enormous effort.
Now, it felt effortless.
"Alright," Charles said. "Let's go in."
They walked straight inside.
The soldiers didn't react at all.
Their eyes still worked.
Their brains did not.
They perceived nothing beyond a frozen image.
As they advanced, Charles realized he still had energy to spare.
So he extended his psychic sense into the villa.
Then-
"Ah!"
Emma, sitting on the sofa in nothing but underwear, felt the overwhelming psychic pressure slam into her defenses.
She cried out and instantly transformed into her diamond form.
That alone prevented Charles from directly controlling her mind.
In diamond form, she was immune to psychic interference.
But she also lost her own psychic abilities.
The Soviet officer beside her-fully dressed, arms wrapped around an illusionary "Emma"-was freed from her control and woke up.
Before he could process why the woman in his arms had vanished and a diamond figure had appeared-
Charles seized his mind again and put him back to sleep.
The door opened.
Charles and Erik walked in.
"Why is your psychic power so strong?" Emma demanded grimly.
You couldn't tell by her face.
"It's the power of knowledge," Charles said with a smile.
He had never felt so exhilarated.
All those brutal hours of studying had finally paid off.
Knowledge is power.
"So what?" Emma sneered.
"No matter how strong you are, you can't hurt me like this."
"And what about me?" Erik said.
The moment his voice fell-
Emma felt invisible walls close in around her.
They compressed.
They rubbed.
"You-what is this?" Emma struggled, but her body wouldn't move.
Her diamond form made her hard.
Not strong.
Even if she had superhuman strength, unless she was on the Hulk's level, resisting Erik was impossible.
"It's also the power of knowledge," Erik said calmly.
He and Charles exchanged a glance.
Then they looked back at Emma.
"Drop your diamond form," Erik said coldly. "Or I'll let you experience what it feels like to burn alive."
"Diamonds burn too," he added. "A thousand degrees isn't much."
"I would never-ah!"
Emma tried to tough it out.
The invisible walls suddenly accelerated.
Her temperature skyrocketed.
The heat felt like it was tearing her apart.
Those who hadn't experienced it could never understand.
Emma had.
She abandoned resistance immediately.
"Stop! I'll talk!" she shouted.
"Cancel the diamond form," Erik said. "And let Charles into your mind."
"I won't believe you otherwise."
"Let me down first," Emma said quickly.
"And I need to cool off!"
"Hmph."
The force released.
Emma dropped to the ground.
The "invisible" restraints flowed back into Erik's hand, condensing into a tiny iron bead.
Earlier, Erik had dispersed it into countless microscopic particles, rendering them effectively invisible.
By controlling them with magnetic fields, he imprisoned Emma.
Then he created opposing polarities, forcing friction-
Generating heat nearly enough to kill her.
Without knowledge, an untrained Magneto would have used iron bars.
Crude.
And unnecessary.
Diamonds were hard.
But brittle.
Her neck could've snapped.
This way was better.
Cleaner.
More impressive.
Now, Erik was no longer just powerful.
He was precise.
A man of the moment.
A faucet turned on nearby.
Water floated up and poured over Emma's head.
After some time, her temperature normalized.
She reverted to human form.
Soaked.
Half-naked.
Her figure, combined with the wet sheen, was undeniably alluring.
No one paid attention.
Charles immediately entered her mind.
Memory after memory unfolded.
Missiles in Turkey.
Missiles in Cuba.
Then Shaw placed his base there.
"All we need," Shaw said, smiling, "is a little push."
On the map, nuclear missiles launched.
From everywhere.
War.
"We are all born of atoms," Shaw laughed madly.
"Radiation kills humans."
"But it makes us stronger."
The world burned.
From the ruins, twisted mutants emerged.
They raised torches and looked up at Shaw with fanatic eyes.
"Black King!"
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Emma said lightly.
"You're insane," Charles said to Erik.
"It's worse than we thought," he continued. "Shaw wants to trigger a nuclear war in Cuba and rule the aftermath."
"We need to report this immediately," Moira said. "She has to come with us."
"Can you?" Emma scoffed.
"If not for him, you'd be ants under my feet."
"Where is Shaw?" Erik asked.
"Where is Shaw?" Charles echoed, preparing to search her mind.
Emma answered first.
"You really want to know?"
A strange smile appeared.
"He was planning to come find you."
"But it seems you missed each other."
"I wonder," she added softly, "who's at the place you just left?"
She watched them carefully.
Waiting for panic.
Regret.
Fear.
There was none.
Erik and Charles exchanged a look.
Silent.
Mutual understanding.
They looked at Emma again.
With pity.
"Why aren't you worried?" Emma's smile vanished.
"Worried?" Charles half-smiled.
"I am."
"I am too," Erik said.
"I'm worried Shaw won't last long enough for me to kill him myself."
"What did you do?" Emma panicked.
"I thought there were only normal people there. And a few mutants you recruited!"
"That's right," Charles sighed.
"But you forgot one person."
"Erik," he added, "should we call the teacher and ask him to keep Shaw alive for you?"
"Of course," Erik said seriously. "And quickly."
"I'm afraid we'll be too late."
Emma: "???"
A deep, nameless dread settled in her chest.
...
CIA Secret Research Division.
Langley, Virginia.
"Heh. A bunch of people who like being tortured."
Salvador stood by the window, watching the others study under Morin in the opposite hall.
She sneered.
Then she froze.
A red, oddly shaped figure stood on the rooftop across from her.
"Who is that?"
Her eyes widened.
Azazel felt her gaze.
He looked up.
Smiled.
Red smoke erupted.
He vanished.
Then reappeared behind Salvador, grabbing her throat.
Morin glanced in that direction.
He had noticed everything from the start.
His psychic perception covered the entire area.
Azazel vanished again in red smoke-this time with Salvador.
They reappeared dozens of meters in the air.
Azazel released her.
He meant to drop her.
She spread her wings midair and floated down, face pale.
"You're a mutant?" Azazel smiled. "Then I won't kill you yet."
"I'll deal with the normal ones first."
"Come down."
The voice appeared directly in his mind.
Calm.
Absolute.
Like a divine command.
Azazel struggled.
It was useless.
He fell.
Paralyzed.
"Alright," Morin said calmly. "Break time."
"Prepare to welcome our guests."
It was Morin who had invaded Azazel's mind, locking his body completely.
No need to involve ordinary people in a mutant conflict.
At the same time-
Outside, a sudden tornado tore across the lawn, charging straight toward the modified Cerebro radar.
And beyond the gates-
Shaw.
Helmet on.
Walking openly toward the base.
