Chapter 197 - Chapter 8: The Weight of an Alliance

"Who's showing off?" Conan swatted Emiya's hand away from his head, clearly annoyed.

"I'm not in a hurry to get back to normal just so I can show off."

Emiya chuckled. "Do you think I believe you?"

"I don't care whether you believe me or not." Conan glared at him, then changed the subject.

"So-when is Ai Haibara going to appear?"

"Before that," Emiya said casually, "tell me this-what case did you run into after the idol case?"

Conan frowned. "A case? Why do I have to go over cases with you? Can't you just give me a date?"

"How would I know?" Emiya shrugged. "Your world's timeline is a mess."

"What do you mean by that?"

"It's simple," Emiya said dryly. "When I read the manga, Christmas and Valentine's Day have passed multiple times, the seasons have changed again and again, yet you're still an elementary school student who hasn't grown an inch."

He didn't even try to hide his sarcasm.

Conan froze for a second.

"H-Hey, you're kidding, right?"

"That's just how it's drawn," Emiya replied. "I don't know the real reason either. I can only estimate based on the cases."

Conan sighed and relented.

"Fine. Uncle Mori just solved an insurance murder case. Two guys insured each other and then-"

"Alright, I know it," Emiya interrupted.

"The Red Oni Village Fire Festival Murder Case."

Conan blinked. "...You really do know everything."

Emiya continued calmly, "And it's still a long way before Ai Haibara appears. After that comes the One Billion Yen Robbery Case, the Haunted House Murder Case, the Luxury Cruise Ship Serial Murder Case, the Gift of the Month Blackmail Case... dozens of cases, at least."

Conan couldn't help complaining, "Hey, hey, that's way too many."

Emiya snorted. "How many cases have you already solved to become the police's savior? You should have a sense for this by now."

Conan fell silent.

"Alright," Emiya said, patting Conan's head again. "I'll wait patiently."

Before Conan could react, Emiya turned around and walked away, leaving behind a visibly irritated Conan.

But the conversation reminded Emiya of something important.

The plot had already progressed this far.

That meant Akemi Miyano should be appearing soon.

If that was the case, then instead of waiting passively for Ai Haibara, it would be better to contact Akemi Miyano first.

If Emiya remembered correctly, Akemi Miyano would soon disguise herself as Masami Hirota and carry out a bank robbery with two accomplices, Kenzo Hirota and Akira Hirota. After stealing one billion yen, Kenzo Hirota would attempt to embezzle the money and flee.

To locate him, Akemi and Akira would pretend to be his relatives and hire a detective-Kogoro Mori.

Which meant that as long as Emiya kept an eye on the Mori Detective Agency, he would inevitably run into Akemi Miyano.

And that was exactly what he did.

Sure enough, the very next day, Emiya saw a bespectacled young woman walking toward the Mori Detective Agency.

He didn't wait for her to reach the door.

He stepped forward and blocked her path.

Akemi Miyano-disguised as Masami Hirota-looked timid, like an ordinary girl.

"Um... is there something I can help you with?" she asked cautiously.

Emiya smiled. "I'd like to talk to you about Shiho Miyano."

The smile vanished from Akemi's face instantly.

Her expression turned sharp and guarded.

"Who are you?" she asked coldly.

"Why do you know that name? Are you with the Organization?"

"I have nothing to do with the Organization," Emiya replied calmly.

"I just want to talk to you about Shiho Miyano."

Akemi wanted to refuse outright, but since the other party had already sought her out so directly, she knew avoiding the issue was pointless.

"...Fine," she said reluctantly. "I'll listen."

"Come with me," Emiya said, turning away from the detective agency.

Akemi followed in silence.

After walking for a while, she asked, "Where are you taking me?"

"Just follow," Emiya replied.

Before long, they arrived at a quiet park with few people around. Emiya sat down on an iron bench.

Akemi hesitated, then sat at the far end, deliberately leaving distance between them.

"Now speak," she said.

"Who are you, and what do you want?"

"I've taken a liking to your sister."

Akemi's eyes widened. "What?"

"To be precise," Emiya corrected calmly, "I've taken a liking to your sister's research ability. I want her to work for me."

A sneer crept onto Akemi's face.

"Shiho is a genius," she said coldly. "But no matter how you found out about her, she won't work for you."

"You're saying the Organization won't allow it, right?" Emiya asked.

Akemi paused, then laughed bitterly.

"The Organization... I suppose that's a fitting name."

She looked at Emiya seriously.

"Since you know about them, you should understand their power. Shiho is a talent they treasure. They'll never let her go."

"I admit they're strong," Emiya replied evenly.

"But they can't stop me."

Akemi scoffed. "And what makes you think you can defeat them?"

Emiya raised his fist slightly.

"In this era, a big fist makes a big boss. Isn't that how it works?"

Akemi laughed outright.

"I don't know how strong you think you are, but you can't fight the Organization alone."

"That's because you don't know how strong I am," Emiya said with confidence.

Originally, he had planned to wait until Ai Haibara appeared.

But there were still dozens of cases before that happened.

So instead of waiting, he decided to take the initiative-starting with Akemi Miyano.

"Call Shiho," Emiya said calmly.

"Tell her you want to see her."

Akemi froze.

"You do have her number, don't you?" Emiya raised an eyebrow.

"...Her movements are monitored," Akemi replied.

"The person answering might not even be Shiho."

"Then just tell the Organization you want to see her," Emiya said. "That's enough."

Akemi stared at him. She could tell he wasn't going to back down.

But she wouldn't either.

"How do I know you won't hurt my sister?"

"I only want her to work for me," Emiya replied.

"I have no intention of harming her."

"I don't even know who you are," Akemi snapped.

"Why should I trust you?"

To Akemi Miyano, Shiho's life was more important than her own.

She would never risk it on the words of a stranger she'd known for less than half an hour.

Emiya sighed softly.

"Do you know," he said, "that you're already in great danger?"

Akemi sneered. "Are you trying to scare me?"

"I'm telling you the truth," Emiya replied.

"Do you really think that after stealing one billion yen, the Organization will let you and your sister go?"

Akemi's expression changed instantly.

"How do you know about that?"

"I know many things," Emiya said calmly.

"And I'm telling you-your plan is naïve. Do you really believe one billion yen is enough to buy Shiho's freedom?"

He paused, then added quietly,

"Have you forgotten the Shuichi Akai incident?"

Akemi fell silent.

She remembered.

Years ago, Shuichi Akai-under the alias Dai Moroboshi-had approached her, pretended to fall in love with her, and used her to get close to Shiho. Through that connection, he infiltrated the Organization and eventually earned the codename Rye.

When his identity was exposed, the Organization abandoned him and hunted him down.

Yet Akemi herself had been spared.

That alone was abnormal.

The Organization's cruelty was well known. Pisco's execution and the destruction of his entire household proved how merciless they were.

Akemi hadn't been spared because of mercy.

She'd been spared because of Shiho.

Which meant one thing-

As long as Shiho Miyano remained valuable, the Organization would never let her go.

And if Akemi stepped out of line again...

The price would be paid in blood.
