Not long after Sophia arrived at the office, she got the alert: Andrew had fainted.
Susan's voice on the phone was furious, practically howling.
Sophia said calmly, "Dad collapsed — he's been taken to the hospital. I'm not a doctor, there's so much going on at the company. If I'm not there, are you coming?"
She hung up without waiting for an answer. The phone rang again immediately; this time it was one of the kids.
"…Mommy, that strange auntie came to the office to see Daddy. She went into his office and shut the door. I don't know what they're doing."
Sophia stood up at once. "Really?"
"Yes. Do you want me to come?"
"Not yet. You stay there for now. When I finish everything tonight, I'll come pick you up."
She couldn't leave just then — she'd already told Susan she wouldn't come. If she changed her mind now, Susan would seize on it as proof of something.
