Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Emma

The closer we inched toward the notice board, the wilder my heart pounded against my ribcage. My thoughts drifted as students chattered loudly around me. Sweat gathered on my palms while my eyes scanned the sheet. Names filled every line, blurring together until I came across a familiar one. My name.

"Emma Mason Douglas Companies,"

I half-whispered, my eyes widening in shock.

Douglas? As in the Tyler Douglas Company? My thoughts flashed to the picture I'd seen in that coffee shop, and chills danced down my spine.

I stood frozen, imagining all the ways that arrogant devil could make my life a living hell with his cocky aura. My thoughts came to a halt when I felt a soft, continuous tap on my back.

"Umm, Ems, Are you okay?"

"Umm… Yeah, sure, I'm fine."

For a second, I'd completely zoned out, oblivious to Regina's presence. She looked eager for her turn, slightly anxious, but nowhere near as nerve-swept as I was.

"I got stationed at Ethan's Enterprises. Where did you get placed?" she asked, brows knitted.

"Douglas Companies," I said with a shrug, my stomach churning with anger.

"Shut up, wait… Oh my, The Douglas Companies? That bachelor who arrived from England two weeks ago?" She gasped, slapping her hands to her mouth in her usual dramatic fashion.

Regina grinned, her eyes twinkling with mischief.

"I swear, I wish I had the opportunity to work under such perfection. Oh, if it were me."

"Regina," I cut in, shooting her a glare. "Don't even start. He's probably some narcissist who looks down on everyone like they're his footstool. Proud. Rich. Arrogant."

"Why aren't you ever fun at parties?" Regina said with an eye roll. She'd probably already decided I was no fun and not nearly as delusional as she was.

"But we still weren't grouped together."

"Well, it's for the best."

"Hey, I'm offended."

"Say that to me later when I find some fucks to give."

"Ems!!"

"Drama queen, take this as an opportunity to meet new people. Walk around, live a little—that's what you're always on about, right?"

"Hmm, true, but coming from you, it's diabolical," she said, eyeing me suspiciously.

Shaking my head at how much of a drama queen Gina is, I was pulled back into my thoughts. I still couldn't wrap my head around the coincidence of this internship. Just thinking about it gave me chills.

When classes finally ended, I couldn't pull myself out of my reverie. I don't know if this is fate or some twisted joke, but either way, it's definitely not funny.
