Chapter 5 - VITAMIN C

"First I would like to state that these rules are subject to change due to, for example, updated bylaws, upper-management decision, and/or new technology adaptations, among other things. Make sure to periodically check for updates. You will not be formally notified. Thank you for understanding and agreeing." Mumsy rambled, agreeing for me like I had a choice at all.

She began going over the nitty-gritty privacy clauses and other useless stuff like that. I spent most of that time spacing out, attempting to balance my pencil between my lip and nose while trying to see how many spins I can make in my chair without getting sick. I gave up on counting after 300, because I soon realized I couldn't actually feel dizzy here.

Anyways, I got the overall rundown on the rules, I think. Like Aubrey said, they locked most of the important features, so me breaking a rule is highly unlikely. That would be because I barely have anything for me to interact with in the first place. That, however, doesn't mean I don't have any rules at all. I can't try to force the sealed programs my predecessor, Aubrey, has set for me. I can't directly interfere with the world's progress in a negative way, for example, let's say I deliberately destroy a species or cause a global disaster decimating a good portion of the world. If it largely sabotages the progress of the realm, then it's a no-go.

Another one that caught my attention is I, as the system, can only govern over one chosen avatar, and once they are established, I am stuck with them until death, unless it is an undead then it starts getting a bit muddy. Mumsy says it's best to just steer clear of those, and I quote, "A lot of paperwork.". Whatever that means.

"...and to that point, you, the system, cannot force any avatar into making choices they want to disregard, and has the right to refuse the system's, help, guidance, and rewards."

"Hang on." I suddenly perked up. "You're telling me if I have an idiot of an avatar, they can choose to ignore my merciful help?"

She nodded. "Mhm. That is correct, but I highly doubt that will ever happen. Getting a system is a huge advantage to any user. Fun fact: Peppers have more vitamin C than oranges. Orange you glad we are done with the accessible regulations?"

Without waiting for my reply to such a terrible joke or explaining what she meant by accessible; She hastily minimized the rules box and was now standing back in her kitchen.

I closed my eyes contemplating if I had the energy to probe her for more info. She seemed to be trying to slyly hide an important piece of news under that terrible pun. Yeah, my guts telling me to ask.

"What's with glazing over that last part?" I questioned.

"Huh, what part" she said, pretending to be ignorant with a dumb look on her face.

I leaned forward in my seat, "You said 'accessible' regulations, what do you mean by accessible?"

"Oh, that. Haha. It's nothing. That's mostly for the higher ups, you see. Rules that deal with things far above our pay grade, no need to pay heed to them. Now let's continue the kitchen tour. The next cabinet is the 'reincarnation' tab. As you can see, it is greyed out with a lock on the handle. Although it has multiple functions, at the moment they are all overridden until you have unlocked hidden conditions set by your predecessor, my master."

"One of its functions is the 'receive and deliver' which will be disregarded due to the initiation of the 'rebirth protocol'. As you have been told previously, essentially any soul whose physical body has perished will naturally receive memory wipe and be sent to the realm next in line for a soul delivery. However, as this is a new realm most souls will likely return to this world."

"Another valuable part that falls into this category is 'player selection'. Prior to its release, all avatars will be chosen automatically. Now on to the next...ah, wait what are you?" She explained and began moving on.

I threw my hand up, halting her. "I need a minute." I said as I got up from my chair and started pacing around the "room" to think.

'Come on Mallory, get it together, you can do this. I didn't spend so many years in customer service, dealing with shitty people for no reason. I mean, the reason was money, but I do like to think I gained just a bit more patience.' I thought to myself as I stared at my every step. 'Let me just envision this, obviously there are going to be things they don't tell me as I am just a temp, and the rebirth things sounds acceptable, but what the fuck is this auto player bullshit? Like seriously, with my luck I can already imagine getting stuck with some pervert for life.'

I stopped pacing and took a deep breath. 'No, I can't think like that, hhaa. I will just have to roll with the punches, there really isn't anything else I can do.'

Realizing I am at the mercy of this and will just continue to get screwed, I began making my way back over to the desk where the old crone stood impatiently. The way her eyes bore through me was like I was the one being inconvenient here.

"Ok. I'm good. I am calmer now, you may continue." I said trying to gaslight myself as I slid my seat up.

"You are too sour; you will get wrinkles with your brows down like that." Mumsy said with no sympathy in her voice. My face began to twitch.

"Now, the next tab is the 'create' tab." she said, and a blue box popped up with the word 'create' on top in bold letters. It has three sub-categories: objectives, rules, and rewards. Firstly, the 'objective' section is where you will create a set of goals or quests to establish a sense of purpose and direction for your player. These will provide motivation for them to engage with the world around them. Once they complete one of these missions, they will receive either reward points based on the difficulty level or other bonuses."

"This leads to the 'rewards' segment. Here you must provide your participant with incentives that give them a sense of accomplishment and encouragement. Releasable prizes can include but are not limited to, unlocking new content, abilities, and statuses." she said as she looked at me, making sure I was paying attention.

"That leaves 'rules' as the last on this page. And no, not more rules for you, but rules you make for your in-world representative. These rules express the extent to which they can make meaningful choices and influence the realm's outcome. They can be as strict or lax as you want. However, once a rule has been established for an individual it can only be overruled but cannot be changed. For example, if you make a rule that they have to cook tacos every Tuesday or their abilities become penalized that rule will be in effect until their expiration. However, you can form another that says all rules are negated on Tuesdays that land on the 5th of the month. Something like that."

This lady and her cooking analogies...this seems useless, but whatever.
