Chapter 122 - chapter 121

Damian adjusted the cuff of his sleeve as he stepped out of his room, the faint sound of activity downstairs drifting up the hallway. The house felt quieter than usual, but not peaceful. There was a tension in the air he hadn't been able to shake since he returned from Ava's room earlier. His mind kept replaying the look on her face, the confusion, surprise, and something else he didn't want to dwell on.

He exhaled slowly and started down the stairs, intent on keeping his expression neutral. Dinner would be served soon, and he just wanted the day to end.

He was halfway down when Charles' familiar voice reached him.

"Sir."

Damian paused at the last few steps and turned slightly. Charles stood near the foot of the staircase, his hands clasped behind his back, his expression careful. Damian recognized that look. It was the same one Charles wore when he thought he'd crossed a line or believed someone else had.

"Yes, Charles?" Damian asked evenly.
