Chapter 46 - Chapter 46. The Giant Dragonite

Chapter 46. The Giant Dragonite

"Come back, Rotom."

Rotom returned to the Rotom Phone, and Natsume walked out of the laboratory.

Outside, he noticed everyone looking a bit dejected.

Behind them, a very familiar Gengar was scratching its head, looking baffled.

[Gengar, Lv. 85.]

A Gengar at such a high level?

Where did it come from?

Natsume was stunned for a moment.

He remembered that the strongest Pokémon Bill had was only a Lv. 48 Blastoise.

"Bill, what happened?"

Natsume ignored Gengar.

It looked friendly, and the moment Natsume came out, it drifted over and settled onto his shadow without a sound.

"Sigh."

Bill let out a deep breath before explaining.

"We contacted Professor Oak, but only Granny Agatha was available, and she's too far from us."

"Professor Oak discussed it with her and planned to use the Pokémon Transfer System to send over a few of her ace Pokémon, so we'd at least have some fighting strength."

"But then…"

Bill's face flashed with anger.

"I don't know which scoundrel cut all my cables.

We managed to transfer Gengar over, and then the system stopped working!"

As he spoke, Bill's expression went slack and he muttered to himself.

"It's over.

If that giant Pokémon gets angered and refuses to communicate with me, what do I do?"

"Hey, hey, hey, not beating you up would already be merciful.

You still want to 'communicate'?"

Misty, at the side, tried to snap Bill out of his unrealistic fantasy.

Hearing this, fear of the unknown surfaced on everyone's faces.

Especially Brock, who still carried a deep impression from the time Rotom Dynamaxed.

And according to Bill's research, that giant Pokémon's level was extremely high.

That made it even more terrifying.

"I'm saying, everyone, don't be so pessimistic…"

A short distance away, Natsume had already gotten chummy with Granny Agatha's Gengar and was feeding it.

"Just look at this Gengar."

As he spoke, Natsume patted Gengar's head.

Gengar turned, its crimson eyes staring straight at Natsume.

"It's been raised exceptionally well, and the level is extremely high.

It should be Granny Agatha's ace."

While speaking, Natsume buckled a Dynamax Band onto his wrist.

"Isn't that thing useless?"

Misty looked at Natsume in confusion.

Professor Magnolia had specifically warned them about it that day.

"It looks good on me."

"…"

"By the way, Gengar, where's your Poké Ball?"

Natsume turned to Gengar.

"Gengaaaar—"

Gengar stuck out its long tongue and rolled a Poké Ball over to Natsume.

Its Trainer had told it to follow whoever seemed most reliable for now.

After careful observation, Gengar decided this person's Black Sludge tasted the best.

Natsume took Gengar's Poké Ball and interfaced it with his Dynamax Band, doing something unknown.

"By the way, Natsume, did your Great Ball Rotom project succeed?"

Ash suddenly thought of it.

"That."

Natsume spoke, and Rotom understood at once, appearing before everyone in its newest form.

"It succeeded!"

Bill looked even happier than Natsume.

"How did your Rotom's capabilities change?

Can it block that giant Pokémon?"

"It can't."

Natsume shook his head.

The hope that had just ignited on Bill's face was extinguished again.

"Hee-hee—"

Nearby, Gengar laughed heartily.

It seemed to relish the atmosphere of other people's disappointment.

"Woooo—wooo~"

From the top of the lighthouse came a long, flute-like horn call.

"It's starting.

Let's go up."

Bill pulled himself together and put on a face of grim determination.

Soon, everyone helped Bill haul a pile of instruments up to the top of the lighthouse.

After a round of adjustments, every device they had brought was aimed at the fog-shrouded sea ahead.

Ash didn't understand what these machines were.

He only knew they could record video, so he also took out his Pokédex, opened the camera, and pointed it at the sea.

"Pika!"

A Pikachu appeared in frame, then quickly vanished, climbing up Ash's arm onto his shoulder.

"Ah, I'm so jealous your Pokédex has this function."

Misty leaned in behind Ash, feeling that his image quality was clearer than many professional cameras.

If her Pokédex had this feature, she'd take ten shots a day.

At the side, Honora also glanced at Ash's Pokédex.

Then she turned to Natsume with stars in her eyes.

"Mr. Natsume, I want one too."

"The second book, How a Researcher Survives in the Wild, page 458 has a hand-crafting tutorial."

Sitting cross-legged atop Gengar's head—Gengar held him up like a platform—Natsume spoke without looking back.

He hadn't prepared anything.

He simply stared motionless at the horizon.

Suddenly, the waves began to rise.

"Woooo—"

From the far side of the sea came a faint reply.

"It's coming!"

Bill's face lit up with excitement.

Everyone held their breath, not daring to exhale.

"It's coming!"

On a cliff, inside a cave in the cliff face, Team Rocket's trio wore the same excited expressions.

"Hahaha, we'll capture that giant Pokémon and present it to Boss Giovanni!"

James's blood was pumping.

"Yeah!

Then Team Rocket will monopolize the Dynamax system in Kanto!"

Jessie was already fantasizing about the future.

"Strange, Meowth, why aren't you talking?"

The two suddenly noticed Meowth trembling at the side.

"W-we should run, meow."

"Why?"

James and Jessie looked at Meowth in confusion.

"She says… she says she's going to kill us.

It's all that idiot researcher's fault, meow!"

"What?"

"What are you even saying?"

Jessie and James looked even more puzzled.

"This sounds just like Dragonite's language, meow!"

A giant Dragonite!?

Jessie and James felt their scalps prickle.

If that was the case, it didn't seem like they qualified to meddle.

"Can't we at least tail those twerps and swoop in afterward?"

James suggested, but Meowth clutched his head, his face growing more and more terrified.

"She also says she'll destroy everything she can see, meow!!!"

"Oh—so you actually understood something, huh, Meowth?"

James suddenly understood.

"Uh, no, meow, I mean that idiot lighthouse researcher, meow!!"

What did that have to do with the lighthouse researcher?

Jessie and James were even more confused.

But before they could explain, a white beam slammed into the sea in front of them.

"Boom!"

A colossal Hyper Beam shot from the other side of the fog, struck the surface, and heaved up a towering wall of water.

The cave flooded, and the trio were swept up by the waves and flung into the sky.

"What's that?"

Natsume's eyes lit up, and he patted the Gengar beneath him.

"Gengar, help me fish that Meowth out."

Gengar nodded, a faint blue glow rising in its scarlet eyes.

Up in the air, Meowth was thinking that getting blasted off like this wasn't so bad.

But he quickly noticed he was getting closer to the ground.

And he was headed toward the lighthouse.

Terrified, Meowth glanced toward the fog.

"No, meow!"

Meowth dropped into Natsume's hands and was grabbed by the scruff of his neck.

"So it's you, Meowth."

Natsume gave a slight shake of his head.

He'd thought it was some Meowth that could actually fly.

Still, Team Rocket's Meowth was special to begin with—he was fluent in almost every Pokémon language.
