Chapter 68
Joe's POV
Everyone froze.
The air was thick, still and silent. I stared at the scene before me, my eyes narrowing as my brain scrambled to make sense of what I was seeing. Lily was on the floor. Jane towered over her, her hand raised mid-air as if caught in the middle of an action she didn't want me to witness.
"What the hell is going on here?" I asked, stepping into the room.
The moment my voice broke the silence, the spell shattered. Jane blinked, then quickly dropped her hand and spun toward me. In a heartbeat, she crossed the room and threw herself at me, her arms wrapping around my neck like nothing had happened.
"Oh, baby," she whispered, planting kisses on my cheek. "You startled me. I didn't hear you come in."
I didn't return the hug. My eyes stayed fixed on Lily, who still hadn't gotten up. Her face was streaked with tears, and she looked… small. Smaller than I remembered. She wiped at her eyes hurriedly and pushed herself off the ground, standing slowly.
