Chapter 118Xavier's POV
The cool day light air should have been a relief after the suffocating poison of Ivan's words, but it wasn't. My lungs still felt heavy as I strode toward the gates. All I wanted was to get away and to breathe without feeling Ivan's smirk hovering over me.
But before I reached the courtyard, a voice cut through the shadows.
"Beta Xavier."
I froze. The title stung in my ears, still a little too fresh, too dangerous. I turned, and there she was. The Luna. Jane.
This was the first time we'd spoken directly. I'd seen her around Joe often enough, smiling like the queen she is but with eyes sharp as blades. She never bothered with warriors like me. Which made it all the more alarming that she was calling for me now.
I bowed. "My lady."
She approached, her silk gown whispering against the stone floor, her perfume sharp and suffocating. Her expression was soft, suspiciously soft. "I heard the announcement. The acting Alpha appointed you as Beta."
