Chapter 16 - Ch-16 Fire

From the far end of the field stood a simple Chunin... or at least he made himself appear as such.

He lay on the grass, the soft and cold leaves contrasting against his warm skin. His head hid behind a bush—he didn't move, didn't breathe too loud.

Every movement could be noticed, and failure in his mission wasn't something he wanted.

It was the same three-tomoe Chunin that had appeared that day to invite Kyojiro to Elder Setsuna's house.

His stoic face observed Kyojiro from a distance, his Sharingan activated. Despite his old age, he was very proud of his Sharingan.

The three revolving tomoe let him observe every action of Kyojiro.

He remembered his orders clearly, 'Observe Kyojiro and see how fast he learns the B-rank jutsu.'

He couldn't help but feel amazed at the intellect of the Elder—the B-rank jutsu acted like a gift, yet at the same time, it was also a test.

Kyojiro was widely considered talentless in the field. His swordsmanship was average, his Sharingan was average, and even his jutsus were average.

Yet somehow, this average man had killed two shinobi who possessed Kekkei Genkai.

'With a ninjutsu at that,' he shook his head as he observed the fiery-haired boy practicing the jutsu over and over while also continuing his swordsmanship training.

'He is definitely not that talented,' the man thought. It was his second day observing the brat, yet Kyojiro was still unsuccessful in learning the jutsu completely.

Though he couldn't help but admit, 'He is definitely hardworking... this boy, he has practiced continuously from before the sun rose till the sun set.'

He couldn't help but watch in anticipation. 'Any moment now... he might just learn this jutsu today.'

...

Kyojiro swept away his sweaty hair, the strands clinging to his forehead. He was bare-chested, the heat of the sun shining on his chiseled back.

'One more time.' He took in a deep breath, visualizing the jutsu—remembering the heat of fire, the way its warmth felt, its destructiveness...He remembered the huge fireball he had thrown at the Iwa Chunin.

He clenched his jaw. Kyojiro knew how much his talent in fire style had increased that day. 'Before, it would have taken me months to just learn it... let alone master it.'

His eyes shined like a mountain trapped in a firestorm. His chest hummed deep within, his heart thumping as he performed the signs of the jutsu.

His chest swelled up, heat traveling up his throat toward his mouth. 'Phoenix Sage Flower Nail Crimson.'

He immediately threw a volley of shuriken.

SWOOSHSWOOSH

He opened his mouth, expelling small balls of fire at the spinning blades. The key component of the technique was speed—the small fireballs had to reach the shuriken, enveloping each one in a ball of highly explosive heat.

Kyojiro's soul rejoiced as he witnessed his technique firsthand.

Ten shuriken flew toward the tree. The fire covering them wasn't normal—it gave off a red sheen. The air trembled in anticipation of its purpose.

The moment the shuriken landed on the tree, Kyojiro had to cover his ears.

BOOMBOOMBOOM

Consecutive explosions rang across the field. By the time it was done, the smooth and healthy bark had turned shredded and burned.Kyojiro watched in fascination as the tree fell.

THUD

He clenched his hand.

Kyojiro Uchiha finally had an ace.

...

Kyojiro sighed as he looked at the door in front of him. Ordinary in appearance and crafted with simple wood, yet Kyojiro couldn't help but hesitate.

On the other side of that door was the most authoritative figure in the Leaf Village—the Kage himself.

Kyojiro blinked. 'Now or never.' Taking in a huge breath of air, he entered. The bells jingled, attracting their attention toward him.

The office was almost empty. One attendant sat in the corner, looking stressed as he flipped through another document.

The office, while cozy, had a fresh stream of air flowing in through the windows. Kyojiro couldn't help but look out at the Village of the Leaf.

The afternoon sun brought a unique orange glow to the village.

Seeing his attention captured by the view, Hiruzen couldn't help but interrupt. "First time seeing a view this pretty?" His voice was sage-like.

Kyojiro nodded.

Hiruzen smiled. "The Leaf Village is beautiful... and it's our responsibility to keep it as such—safe and protected."

Kyojiro turned toward him, his fiery hair shining under the orange glow. "It is my responsibility to protect my comrades... my teammates. The strong exist to protect the weak." He spoke with conviction.

Kyojuro Rengoku had taught him many things through his memories—but one thing that stuck was this line.

He remembered the day his teammates died. He had prayed to God for some savior...His eyes sharpened. 'Now... I have to be the savior.'

Hiruzen's eyes widened before softening. "I see you've inherited the Will of Fire." He paused for a moment before asking, "So why have you come?"

Kyojiro replied, "That offer you gave—I'd like to take it. I believe working with Minato, I can do more good."

Hiruzen looked at Kyojiro with interest. He was the Hokage; he knew everything that occurred in the village—including Kyojiro's visit to Setsuna's place.

Yet despite that, he didn't plan to disagree. He was a great judge of character, and Hiruzen was sure about one thing—'Kyojiro Uchiha truly believes in the Will of Fire.'

He nodded. "Sure... I'll do that," he spoke with a pause. "However, there is something you have to do first."

He motioned to the attendant, who quickly brought him a scroll.

Hiruzen spoke, "Your mission—join the attack squad to reclaim the border post that Konoha lost." His voice boomed through the room. "Minato will join you later, don't worry."

Kyojiro's eyes widened as he heard the mission. 'What? The war... it has already started?'

Hiruzen, meanwhile, continued—a sly smirk forming on his lips. "It's a direct order from your Hokage."
