Chapter 1 - 1. Good Morning Beautiful

09:18

I stand in front of my mirror, preparing myself for what is to come out of today. I glance over at my calendar, September 14th, 2008. Today is the day I get evaluated on whether I can go to the 'New Plane', as people have dubbed it. I throw on a t-shirt with my favourite bands logo, stumbling down the stairs of my decently large home. I run my hands through my shaggy hair, trying to get all the dark brown strands away from my eyes. I spot my mother and father sat across from each other in the dining room, drinking tea and coffee respectively. "Mornin' guys. Sleep well?" I ask fairly cheerily. They clearly notice, as I hear a "Hey bud, excited for today?", from my dad. Not even answering my question. "Y'know, I'm less excited than I thought I'd be." I murmur, thinking of not being around my parents for a while. "Champ, we both went over there and came out fine. You'll do the same. And if you don't? Hm." Nobody is rejected from the New Plane and goes home the same.

I casually stroll down the street towards my school, glancing down at my wrist. This'll be one of the last times I see it before they bolt a small metal rod through it. Something to do with stopping you from just dying during the passing. I spot my mate Will as he crosses the street only slightly ahead of me. "Ay! Will! Turn around!" I shout at him, I've been shouting this for years now, ever since we started school together. He turns, facing towards me before he begins to speak, "Huh? Oh, hey Sam. Todays the day, hm?" he continues, "Y'know, I did some research, I'm not more likely to be sorted into any domain over any other." He looks at me like I know what he is talking about. I murmur, "Yeah, so... uh, about that... what're you on about?" I look at him, dumbfounded, before continuing, "I know the basics, like... uh... yeah." I stare at him blankly while continuing to walk. He stares directly back at me. "I'm not explaining this right now." We walk in silence until arriving at school, seeing large groups of people chatting with each other, some bragging about the metal rod implanted through their wrist. "Seems painful... maybe not after all..." I say to myself. I stroll past them all, having to brush shoulders and get a few odds looks. I glance back and see Will getting lost in the endless sea of people, a few of them probably doing it on purpose. I stare into his eyes as he mouths something similar to "Go".

11:36

I walk into the gym hall, full of expectation. I see lines of people, all full of expectation. Everyone is certain of one thing in this room, getting a metal rod through your arm will hurt like hell. I whisper to myself, "What's the point of the rod..?", a random man off to the side clearly heard me, somehow, and begins to walk towards me. He stares down on me, his lanky frame probably leaving him at around 6'5". "So, having second thoughts? I did as well, but well..." He holds up his hand, showing the metal rod. His one, however, is surrounded by scars. "Don't second guess. Just don't. Not worth it." He walks off, his short hair flicking slightly to the side as he turns.
