Chapter 10 - Grumpy Librarian

When the back and forth with lovesick Lance and Angela was over, Angela left, leaving my dude standing there with a defeated expression on his face.

Like, for real, he was the strongest in the first year, and yet he was so down because he couldn't get with a lady. I guess not everything goes well for those that are stupidly talented and have all the resources in the world.

My gaze shifted to the girl again. She was slowly eating, but I could tell from under her hair that she was looking at Lance. I let out a tired sigh. Love was a very hurtful thing, and it seemed this academy had a lot of it.

After eating, we headed for our next class, which was on Demon Beast Studies. Demon beasts, they were the savage predators that humanity, along with many other races, fought.

No one knew the origins of the beasts and why they attacked, but for over five thousand years, they had continuously attacked and fought humanity.

Unlike normal beasts and mystical beasts, the game explained that the demon beasts were beasts that gave their souls to a darkness.

When I read the wiki of the game a year back, it only explained that the darkness manifested over five thousand years ago and beasts were turned into monsters which attacked and killed humans and other races. Soon after, they were given the name "demon beasts."

Their power, strength, and influence had grown greatly over that time, and they had become the greatest threat to ever exist. As for what the darkness really is? I do not know. Maybe it would have been in a sequel of the game or something, but no proper explanation was ever given about it.

We got to our class like everyone else and sat through it, while the teacher, a man with full grey hair and a grumpy old face taught. He looked like he would beat someone up if they even spoke a word, and so no one dared speak at all.

Hours passed, we had a few more classes, and then finally I was done for the day. I thought I'd be returning to the dorm with Andrew, but he had something to do, and so he bid me farewell and left.

With him out of the way, I could finally get to practicing some magic. I was too far behind. So I headed to the library, it was a separate building, massive and beautiful from the outside.

But when I stepped inside, I forgot about everything that the outside had to hold because it all paled in comparison to this beauty. Hundreds and hundreds of shelves ran down the building, filled with books, scrolls, and other forms of information.

Lamps hung from the ceiling, with crystals in them, giving off a beautiful glow that ensured anyone reading could see.

The floors were made of marble, and as I walked, it let out a small echo, but not enough to distract those who were reading.

There was a librarian, a middle-aged woman. I walked up to her first and gave a small bow. She looked at me, a certain detachment in her eyes, like she had seen this too many times and it didn't matter to her anymore.

"What do you want?" she asked me, barely paying attention.

"I'm a first year, and I'd like to read some books here," I said.

"First years don't have identity cards yet. Sorry, you can't access the library. Come back when you've been issued one," she said dismissively.

I felt a spark in my head. My eyes ran across the counter, and I saw the day passes that sat there. I looked at her again, hiding my anger. "Isn't there a day pass or something that I could use?"

"Tsk." She clicked her tongue and then looked at me. Her emotionless face shifted into a pissed one. She looked at me again, brows furrowed. "Kid, you can't get in today. Try again tomorrow when you have your ID card." She said those words, pronouncing every single syllable to ensure that I heard her.

I did hear her, she was right in front of me, but I didn't want to agree with her because I knew for a fact that students without an ID card, or who had misplaced theirs, could enter the library with a day pass.

She was just being a pissy human and taking out her aggression on me for doing nothing. But there was nothing I could do, she was in charge here, and I would be punished before I could even explain if I decided to make a scene.

So I gave a slight bow and walked to the door. She watched me leave, her eyes never leaving my back even once, yet she didn't call me back or even try to stop me in the slightest. She just watched me go.

I stepped out of the building, took a deep breath, and headed back to my dorm. It took everything in me not to insult and curse the hell out of her.

I arrived at my room, opened the door, and walked in. Without even taking anything off, I walked to the bed and lay down.

Regardless of the fact that I couldn't get the book, I still had a lot of knowledge when it came to how the magic worked in this world. I just had to recall it and use it, right?

I was so dearly wrong. If only I knew the hell I was about to put myself through, I would have waited for the book.

But regardless, I entered the space, standing there close to the things I had imagined before. I quickly deleted them since they were useless, and then I got to work.

I stood there, my mind working overtime to start recalling the concepts of magic and how it worked. If I could recall it properly, then I'd cast magic easily. Or so I thought.
