"Boss, I just saw your wife coming out of SynCore," Richard said over the phone.
I froze, whiskey hovering just inches from my lips before I set the glass down with a quiet clink.

My jaw ticked as the name settled in. Of all the companies in New York, it had to be one of my biggest competitors—a rival to both me and Helix Biotech.
Leaving my desk, I walked out of the office and headed straight for her room. The moment I stepped inside, the puppy yapped and bounded toward me. It circled my legs, whining, and I crouched, scooping it up with one hand while scanning the room.
Harper wasn't here.
The wardrobe stood open, clothes scattered across the bed. I picked up one of her nightdresses, brought it to my face, and breathed in deeply. Her sweet, familiar floral scent grounds the quiet irritation stirring inside me.
Richard let out a soft grunt on the other end of the call.
"What is she doing there?" I asked.
"An interview," he replied.
