My throat narrowed. For a second, I forgot how to breathe.

What the hell?

I could've handled just Harper, but my full government name? That was different. I couldn't even remember the last time he'd used it. Hearing it now felt wrong—formal, distant. Cold.

My eyes dropped to the folder. Whatever was inside, I was sure of one thing—it wasn't good. It screamed Don't touch me and run fast.

Dominic stayed quiet. And that silence? It was deafening. Each second that passed made my chest constrict even more.

When I couldn't take it anymore, I whispered, "What do you want to tell me? It must be really serious for you to call me by my last name."

"It is," he said in a grave voice.

I nodded stiffly, heart now racing with all the worst-case scenarios I could think of—including ones that didn't even make sense.

"Tell me, then."

Instead of speaking, he nudged the folder toward me. "Open it."
