"Checked," Harper murmured, pointing up at the balloons hanging from the ceiling.

Honestly, I had no idea how she managed to reach that high, and I didn't even want to imagine it. The thought of her risking her neck just to make tonight special for Mila—it irritated me more than I wanted to admit.

But that wasn't the only thing getting under my skin.

She was avoiding me. That much was obvious in the way her eyes flitted around the room, double-checking every last decoration, never once looking at me.

I'd been standing in the doorway for the last ten minutes. No hello. No smile. Nothing.

"All of this looks well put together," I said, making my presence known.

Harper stopped mid-pace. I half-expected her to turn around and flash me that smile, the one I always looked forward to and adored.

But instead, she snorted and shrugged without even glancing my way.
