Chapter 5 - Aegis Protocol

Ellis, or rather Sean now, since he had decided to play as Sean in this life, reacted violently to the boys words.

He knew almost nothing about this Sean, and he needed to build connections and allies, also, get information about the boy... which to him was the most important, lest another situation out of his control like from earth till now, happens again.

But as much as he needed information, and as much as pain wracked his body right now, what he needed was a chance to grow stronger. A desperate chance.

"Hey! Easy"

"Take it easy kid. Are you looking to die?"

Both the doctor and the black haired boy immediately warned, trying to get him to relax.

Not bothering with anything else they had to say, he swung his leg off the bed, and came down, standing upright on his feet, against the gaping eyes of the two.

"Let's go" he commanded, his voice almost coming off as a growl.

"Uhhh.... Doc.?" The boy looked towards the doctor, as though asking him for help.

"Kid, are you sure you're not evolved?" The doctor suddenly asked, peering at Sean like a specimen.

"But that doesn't make sense, I'd have known if you were, your injuries should've healed faster, infact, you wouldn't even need to come here... Either that, or you were still undergoing mutations and cell proliferation, but my scan didn't show that..."

Sean practically zoned him out the moment he heard mutation and cell proliferation. Something like that, did appear on his interface, when he had just woken up to the new world.

'Did I undergo enhancement? But why don't I feel the coursing of power and other stuff, as described in the book?' His mind raced.

'Or is it... Wait! This body does have incredible senses... right, I knew that was not supposed to be normal'

"Evolved? I do have inhuman senses, I don't know if that counts as one" Sean said, distracting the doctor from his continuous blabber of medical jargons and speculations.

His question was meticulous, not exactly confirming anything, yet probing how much the doctor knew.

"Boy are you playing with me?" The doctor suddenly snapped, looking at Sean like he would spit fire from his eyes.

"Your heightened senses are your inbred genes. That has nothing to do with your evolution"

They went silent for a while. The black haired boy, because he was confused, and really didn't know what the two were rambling about, while Sean and the doctor, were busy running their different speculations.

"What am I even saying?" He doctor finally sighed. "If there was anything, I would have seen it."

As a doctor, he was able to peer into other people's records. Though restricted to only medical records, body anatomy and genes, it was something nonetheless.

"The Aegis Protocol is infallible." He mumbled under his breath.

They weren't supposed to hear it, but Sean with his sensitive ears, did. However, he kept his composure, letting nothing slip.

There was no way the doctor could have forgotten that his senses were too sharp... In that case, it could be a trap.

It seemed this doctor was more scheming than he let on. As for why the doctor seemingly had so much interest in him, Sean didn't know. No doubt he was very curious, as this doctor might have some information, but it could be dangerous as well.

Considering, how brutal and battered he had woken up in this body, it seemed this Sean was not an ordinary character either.

Though it was also given that the previous owner of this body might have just entangled with hoodlums, that system prompt from earlier, seemed to say otherwise.

And unlike the doctor thought, the Aegis Protocol wasn't infallible at all.

"We'll be leaving then," Sean finally said, the pain in his body, feeling like minor aches now.

For some odd reason, the healing process seemed to have sped up when he disregarded his health, unlike when he was laying down.

"Help yourself out" the doctor said dismissively.

'Status' Sean called out inwardly, as he and the other boy left.

Immediately they left the door, the doctor paused what he was doing, his eyes flicking back and forth... from the door, to the detailed medical and anatomical records of Sean he had.

Slowly, he chuckled. "This boy knows more than he's letting on"

He couldn't help himself, his lips curling to a sly grin, and an urge to just bundle the boy, and pry his head open, rising in him. But he curbed it down.

There was more he had to see. When the time was right, the boy would be of good use.

"Sean Storme huh?"

Sean gave a sweeping glance at the system panel, again feeling as though the information on it, was directly fed to his brain, as long as he payed the slightest bit of attention to it.

It was really a marvelous design.

The Aegis Protocol, was infact, a system. A collective system that determined the life of every human being, by assigning numbers to them, to show their value, and importance to society.

The Continuity Index.

It was a highly effective method of keeping people in check, against the chaos of the walls that protected humanity from the chaos outside.

However, there was something more sinister to it. It was basically an open secret that the Aegis Protocol was meant primarily for control, rather than to help, but nobody dared voice it out.

Something that caught Sean's attention though, was his name... Storme. He knew an important character from the book, surnamed Storme... A woman to be precise, but there had been nothing written about her having a ward.

The woman lived in the inner sector, and according to his privileges, his guardian also lived in the inner sector. It couldn't just be a coincidence.

'What exactly was happening?'
