Chapter 11 - Life or Death: II

The first beast pounced, maws wide and ready to devour. In response, Sean instinctively crossed his arms in defense.

The beast's weight, plus his unbalanced footing, immediately had them falling on the ground. Due to their awkward landing, his left arm was pressed deep against the beast's jaws, leaving it unable to close its mouth.

However, the pain that raced his arms from that alone, was mind numbing. The beast's molars were clenched strongly against his arms, the could hear them groan, the pressure undeniably massive, some teeth, even tearing into his flesh.

At this point, all his genius seemed to have flown off the window, consumed by panic and desperation.

Mustering all his strength, he tried to immediately push the beast off, when a set of jaws clamped around his leg, causing him to jerk in pain.

His brash movement tore the skin of his left arm that was in the beast's jaw, but the beast wasn't unscathed either, as strength Sean didn't know he had, seemed to have broken the jaw off its hinges.

Pushing same arm up with a desperate roar, amidst spikes of pain, as the beast retaliated to the overwhelming pain that came with having its mouth basically useless, with desperate paw swipes, that landed, tearing his skin and causing blood to bloom like lotuses.

With his movement, the beast's head snapped up, further dislocating the jaw entirely, and even exposing its fragile throat.

What happened next was a mix of Sean's genius and primal flight or fight instinct. He pulled back his right arm however uncomfortable it was due to his position, and delivered a devastating blow straight to the beast's exposed throat.

*Crack!*

The undeniable sound of shattered brisket bone seemed to ground him, the beast's eyes flying wide with pain and suffocation, letting out small gurgles as it tried to breathe through the blood that began clogging its airways but failing. Life slipping in between, and out of its grasp.

Sean finally managed to push it away the moment its body went limp, kicking his almost mangled leg fiercely, against the other beasts.

He backed up a little, pain racking his entire body as he bled and bruised all over. Yet, even amidst all that, his stomach growled fiercely with an intensity that rivaled the beast's growls, as though in a contest.

The beasts seeing their fallen brother, stiffened a little, before something else surfaced beside their hunger, rage creeping into their eyes.

Even with how intense the entire sequence was, it was only four seconds since the wolf pounced, yet one already was dead, and he was quickly jogging towards death's door as well.

As he backed away to get a breather, his hands wrapped around something wet and grimy, but with pointed and jagged ridges that felt rough to the touch.

Sparing it a bare flicker of a glance, what he saw was a bone that clung weakly to a corpse... most likely broken off, during his fall. The flesh on it also appeared to be mangled, an evident work of the beasts.

Without even thinking, he pulled it out with a grotesque squelch, and "pop" snapping of joints, ligaments and tendons.

What came out was a femur bone, sleek with blood and dangling strands of meat.

The head where the joints met, was large and bulged, whereas, the body where it had broken off, was jagged. It was approximately the size of a baseball bat, and he held it like one.

Another one jumped in and he met it head on, swinging the bone to match its strike, only for it to retreat at the last second, baiting him to over commit.

Seeing him exposed, another jumped in, and he instinctively twisted his body, bracing himself for the pain, while his elbow came down, connecting a satisfying bash against the beast's skull.

The beast retreated with a yelp, and Sean scrambled to his feet, waving the bat against them in deterrence.

His breathing was coming out in ragged bursts, his chest ached... His whole bones did. His body stung with mind numbing pain, and the irritation from the sun, seemed to even make the burns worse.

However, his mind was not focused on any of that, instead, waving the bone bat against the beasts, body tensed and pumping with adrenaline.

The beasts advanced and retreated, trying to bait him to over commit like last time, which he had been lucky to have reacted fast enough, but learning from his mistake, he didn't buy it.

Instead, even as he stared at them with mania and caution, waving the bone as deterrence and intimidation, his mind was running overdrive, documenting and studying the beasts' movements with scrutinizing detail.

Thanks to his great eyesight which had only been further amplified after his "failed" enhancement, he was able to spot the slightest contraction in any sinew at all, knowing when they were about to move.

Seeing that their tactics were not working, they attacked all at once. Two pounced from the front, the other two from his flanks.

His brain seemed to map out their trajectory in real time, body moving out of his control to a fluid and smooth sidestep, to dodge the leading beast.

His toes curled inside his shoes, and torque was generated from his quads, to his core... All the way to his arm. Riding on the momentum of his sidestep, he brought his arm down, the bone smashing against the head of another beast, and crushing its skull.

His gambit however, allowed the one that had rushed in from his left to tackle him to the ground, toppling over the one he had sidestepped, and falling on the beast.

Without a drop in his beat, Sean let go of the bone the moment he fell, then snatched it back up in a reverse grip, and stabbed its jagged edge, straight into the eyes of the beast that tackled, him, while the other dog wiggled fiercely under their weight.

The beast's eye burst open, and Sean drove the bone deep until it pierced its brain, causing the beast to convulse with violent jerks to its death.

He didn't let up, kicking fiercely against the last standing beast, his heel colliding with its snout, causing it to stagger dizzily. Then he rolled over the beast that was still under him and struggling to stand, his arms immediately wrapping around its neck and a single unfortunate limb, in a brutal choke match.

His toned arms bulged as with a roar, he twisted his arms and broke its neck, then tossed it aside, and turned to the last one which immediately stiffened at his gaze.

With a loud yelp that sounded like a whimpering puppy, it turned on its heels with its tail tucked between its leg, letting out cries and whimpers as it scampered away.

Sean didn't bother chasing it, his eyes now on the four beasts he had killed.

His stomach growled and grumbled angrily, and strength seemed to be quickly leaving his body. His eyes however, were calm and filled with bloodlust, glowing a deep, dark ruby, different from its normal black.

In his mouth, his canines throbbed achingly, his mouth salivating, and his throat, gulping and swallowing mouthfuls of saliva.

Then he crouched down, raising the body of the first wolf which also happened to be the biggest one, and opened his mouth, exposing large canines that were like dagger tips.

He seemed to hesitate a little, maybe feeling repulsed by what he was about to do, but his lips still approached the beast neck where he had shattered its throat...

And then he bit in.
