Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Feeling the Pull

Jade couldn't remember the last time she had felt this alive. The memory of Lila's laughter, her playful smirk, and the soft warmth of her hand brushing against hers replayed in Jade's mind like a favorite song on repeat. Every message, every glance, every shared joke seemed to linger longer than it should—and yet, Jade didn't mind. Not one bit.

That Saturday evening, she found herself at Lila's apartment again, a little nervous, a little excited. Lila had promised they would "try something adventurous" in the kitchen tonight, and Jade didn't know if it was the food or the company that made her heartbeat quicken.

"Look who's here," Lila said, sliding her arms around Jade in a quick hug that lingered just enough to make Jade's pulse spike. "Ready for tonight's culinary adventure?"

"Always," Jade replied, smiling, though her hands felt a little clammy.

As they moved through the kitchen, chopping and stirring, Lila was her usual mix of playful and confident. Every time their hands brushed over the cutting board or when Lila leaned close to explain a trick with the knife, Jade felt a spark she couldn't ignore. She tried to focus on the food, but her attention kept drifting to Lila's face—those expressive eyes, that mischievous smile, the subtle tilt of her head that made Jade's chest flutter.

"You know," Lila said suddenly, leaning close enough that Jade felt her breath brush her cheek, "you're awfully quiet tonight. Something on your mind?"

Jade's cheeks warmed, and she glanced down at her chopping board, fumbling for words. "I… I'm just… focused," she said weakly, even though she knew Lila saw right through her.

"Focused, huh?" Lila teased, raising an eyebrow. "Hmm. Sure looks like something else is distracting you." She reached out, lightly nudging Jade's hand. The touch was brief, playful, but it left a lingering warmth.

Jade swallowed hard. "Maybe…" she whispered, her voice low.

The teasing in Lila's smile deepened, and Jade felt a thrill run through her. Lila always had this way of noticing the smallest details, of seeing right through her walls. It was exciting, terrifying, and… irresistible.

By the time they had finished cooking, the kitchen smelled heavenly. They plated their food, sitting close at the small dining table. Lila leaned over, tasting a bit of Jade's creation, her fingers brushing Jade's again. "Wow," Lila said, her eyes meeting Jade's. "This is amazing… and so are you."

Jade blinked, her heart hammering. She wanted to laugh, to tease back, but all she could do was manage a small, shy smile. "You're just saying that," she murmured, though her stomach fluttered with excitement.

"Am I?" Lila asked, leaning slightly closer, the playful smirk still in place. "Because I'm pretty sure I'm not."

The conversation shifted to lighter topics, but the air between them was charged with something unspoken. Every touch, every shared glance, every soft laugh felt intimate. Jade realized she was hyper-aware of Lila's presence, of the warmth radiating from her. The playful teasing had become something more—something that made her heart race and her thoughts spiral.

After dinner, they moved to the couch, mugs of tea in hand. Lila leaned back, stretching lazily, and Jade couldn't help noticing how close they were. Shoulders brushing, knees almost touching—it was subtle, but the tension was undeniable.

"You know," Lila said softly, tilting her head, "I feel like you're holding back a little. Something you don't want to admit."

Jade's stomach twisted. She did want to admit it—but admitting it meant confronting feelings she wasn't sure she fully understood yet. "I… I'm just…" she faltered, searching for words.

"You're thinking about me," Lila said simply, her voice teasing but warm. "Am I right?"

Jade froze, heat rushing to her cheeks. She wanted to deny it, to play it off, but the truth was too clear. She looked away, murmuring, "Maybe…"

Lila's grin softened into something gentler, more inviting. "It's okay, Jade. Feelings don't have to be scary. You can explore them… one step at a time."

The words settled over Jade like a soft blanket. She felt seen, understood, and, most importantly, safe. For the first time, she realized that curiosity could be exciting without being frightening. She could let herself feel these new emotions—attraction, warmth, tenderness—without rushing or forcing them.

They sat in comfortable silence, shoulders brushing occasionally, hands lightly touching as they shared sips of tea. Jade's heart raced with every small contact, every teasing glance. She was aware of every detail—Lila's eyes, the tilt of her head, the subtle warmth of her touch.

"You're really thinking about it, aren't you?" Lila whispered, leaning closer so their knees touched. "Curiosity, attraction… it's okay to admit it."

Jade swallowed hard, heart pounding. "I… I think I am," she admitted softly, words barely above a whisper.

Lila smiled, that slow, knowing smile that made Jade's chest flutter uncontrollably. "Good. Curiosity is the start of discovery. And discovery can be… very sweet."

Jade's pulse quickened, a mix of excitement, nervousness, and anticipation swirling inside her. She realized she wanted more—more moments, more teasing, more closeness. She wasn't sure where this would lead, but for the first time in a long time, she felt alive, curious, and ready to explore feelings she had never allowed herself to feel before.

As the night ended, they hugged goodbye—a hug that lingered just a little longer than necessary. Jade walked home with a warm smile tugging at her lips, heart still racing from the subtle sparks, playful touches, and tender glances.

For the first time, she wasn't just discovering Lila—she was discovering herself.

And that discovery felt exhilarating
