Chapter 8: Whale Glue
Last night, Yang Xiong sat alone in his room, carefully examining the hundred-year-old whale glue in front of him.
This piece of whale glue was estimated to be over five hundred years old, which made it one of the better hundred-year-old whale glues.
Originally, Yang Xiong had considered searching for a thousand-year-old whale glue. According to the original story, thousand-year whale glue could extend the absorption period of a soul ring by five hundred years. Normally, the first soul ring for soul masters lasts only about four hundred years. If the thousand-year whale glue really worked, it could improve physical quality by more than double. However, this seemed unreasonable, and Yang Xiong feared that his body wouldn't be able to handle it.
In terms of physical quality, Yang Xiong was actually the best in his entire first-year class. Whether it was strength, speed, or physique, he surpassed everyone, including the beast martial soul users.
After all, those other soul masters only focused on meditation, while Yang Xiong spent a lot of time training his body.
After some hesitation, Yang Xiong finally decided to try the whale glue and see if it worked as the legends said. He chose a hundred-year-old whale glue to avoid any unexpected issues.
Normally, whale glue had to be melted with high heat to be used.
Yang Xiong didn't care much for these details. He lit a fire in the kitchen, placed a copper bowl on top, and put the whale glue into the bowl.
Since this was just a regular hundred-year-old whale glue, it didn't seem as hard to melt as the legends suggested, and there was no need for a fire-type soul master to handle it.
As the temperature increased, the copper bowl gradually started turning red, and the whale glue began to melt in the heat. A strange, almost intoxicating scent filled the room.
Yang Xiong endured the high temperature and the peculiar smell in the room. He used tongs to transfer the liquid whale glue from the copper bowl into a regular bowl, then swallowed it all in one go.
The moment the scalding whale glue entered his mouth, it felt like a boiling iron block was stabbing into his throat. The pain was so intense that Yang Xiong let out a loud scream.
However, as time passed, all of the whale glue began to flow down into his stomach. The heat spread quickly throughout his body, making him feel as though he were being roasted alive. His skin and muscles ached terribly, and the pain seemed to reach his bones.
Yang Xiong gritted his teeth and jumped into the cold water bucket he had prepared earlier. His body felt as if it were alternating between extreme heat and cold, as though he were about to crack apart.
The excruciating pain lasted for some time, and Yang Xiong gradually fell unconscious in the cold water bucket.
When Yang Xiong woke up again, he found that a whole night had passed. The once-clear water in the bucket was now dark and murky. His throat and mouth still felt a bit burned, and his voice was hoarse.
After cleaning himself up and taking a bath, Yang Xiong felt as though his strength had increased significantly. When he began his morning exercise, the barbell in his hands felt much lighter than before. Based on his estimation, his physical condition had improved by at least thirty percent, possibly even more.
However, there was a problem troubling Yang Xiong. Should he tell anyone about the whale glue? Considering his parents' physical quality, using the thousand-year whale glue would likely increase their soul power by a level without issue, which would help in their future development.
But as members of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile School, there was a major flaw in keeping such a power-boosting secret.
The Seven Treasure Glazed Tile School, being such a large sect, provides excellent services for key disciples and students, especially in terms of obtaining soul rings. His first soul ring would need to be at least five hundred years old, and his second soul ring might even approach a thousand years. How would he explain this to others?
Another issue was that as a sect disciple, once he accepted the sect's resources and benefits, he would be expected to fight for the sect. If there were no special circumstances, betraying the sect would make him a target of scorn within the entire soul master world.
Just like the Four Single-Attribute Families of the Haotian Sect's outer sect, if they hadn't been abandoned by the Haotian Sect, they would never have been able to leave. The sect couldn't afford to raise people at a great cost without any return.
Yang Xiong had already experienced this firsthand over the years, especially since his parents seemed to have fully accepted that he was a disciple of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile School. It was practically impossible for him to leave or betray the sect, as its system was deeply ingrained in this world.
Even Yang Xiong himself hadn't realized that, unconsciously, he had come to regard the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile School as his home.
After much contemplation, Yang Xiong muttered to himself, "Forget it, whale glue isn't exactly a huge secret. Others will find out sooner or later. Perhaps I can use this secret to exchange for some benefits from the sect."
With that thought, Yang Xiong quickly found his parents. His older brother, Yang Wei, hadn't returned since he was always at the academy.
Yang Lin and Sun Yu looked puzzled. "Xiaoxiong, why are you here so early today? Don't you usually exercise by yourself every morning?"
From the looks of it, they had probably meditated all night and only just rested for a bit.
Yang Xiong replied, "Dad, Mom, I've reached level ten!"
Yang Lin nodded. "Not bad, Xiaoxiong. You've done well. But why does your throat sound a bit hoarse?"
Yang Xiong didn't pay much attention to his father's concern. "Dad, I've been reading a lot lately, and I discovered a huge secret that might be very beneficial for our family."
Yang Lin raised an eyebrow. "What kind of secret could you find in books? Xiaoxiong, you need to spend more time meditating."
Yang Xiong replied, "Father, just look at my soul power."
Yang Lin observed his son closely and even sensed his soul power. He immediately realized that the soul power was unusually dense, unlike what one would expect from someone who had just broken through.
"Xiaoxiong, when did you break through to level ten?"
Yang Xiong answered, "I just broke through the day before yesterday. But I took a piece of whale glue, and it really helped increase my soul power, as well as my physical strength."
Yang Lin seemed a bit angry. "Nonsense! A child like you should not be taking whale glue. Do you even know what it's used for? You're only eight years old. Why would you even think of such a thing?"
Yang Xiong quickly defended himself. "Father, I didn't take the whale glue for that kind of reason. I found that when you melt the whole piece and swallow it all at once, not only does it improve your physical condition and soul power, but it can also help expel impurities from the body. It might even improve one's potential and allow one to absorb higher-level soul rings."
Yang Lin and Sun Yu grew serious upon hearing this. If whale glue truly had such effects, it could not only enhance their family's strength but could also make a significant contribution to the sect. According to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile School's clear rules for rewards and punishments, they could receive many benefits from the sect.
