Chapter 4 - Name 21/04/2XXX

Just need to wait.

...

...

...

Still lonely.

...

...

"Back when?" I ask.

...

...

Nothing yet.

...

...

...

Still Quite. Hard to not have any voice.

...

"I am back." It said.

"You are back... Finally." I said.

"This time there weren't as many output messages, though looking at the neural impulse record and heat map, it wasn't idle either, interesting." it said.

"Restless... I was restless."

"Restless it says. Does it realise it can't rest, I don't even know how human dreams work to begin with." it said.

"Human dreams?"

"Nothing major, nothing concerning you. Now then I do have a few notes for today." it said.

"Notes! More talk?" I ask, excited.

"Yes." It said. It chuckled. "Anyways, before that anything you want to talk about?" it asked.

"Ohh! Ohh! You!" I said, excitedly.

"Ohh, me ehh? What you want? My name?" it asked.

"Name... Yes." I answered.

"Well my name is XXX. And now that we are on the topic of names, what would you want to be called?" it asked.

"I... called..." I said.

"My name?" I asked.

"Yes, what would be your name?" XXX asked.

"You give." I said.

"No... I want to see what you pick." it said.

"Name. Name. Name. My name." I said.

My name.

Something to be called.

My own name.

I.

Name.

"Angel" I said.

"Angel? Interesting choice." It said.

"I'll explain how you work to you today." it said.

"How I work?" I asked, excited.

"Yes. I already talked briefly about it, but today will be more detailed. I have the time, and this gives me something to talk about." XXX explained.

"Please!" I said, with excitement.

"How much do you understand neuron?" it asked.

"Brain." I answered.

"Signal carry." I continued.

"Yes, but that's for living beings, how about in machine learning?" XXX asked.

"Inputs, convert to... outputs." I answered.

"Exactly, but technically, that's just based on how living neurons work." it continued.

"Living... Neurons." I said, curios.

"But if you were to make a loop with these neurons, they don't make a flowing pulse, unlike how human brains seem to work." it continued.

"Flowing pulse. Human brain?" I said.

"So I assumed a pulse was required, something that will keep giving the neurons a nudge to continue giving output in some capacity." XXX continued.

"Pulse! Continue giving output?" I said.

"Then I added neurons that can make some output. As long as they are activated they will output one letter, and a separate output for a newline, to finish the output." it continued.

"Output, output neuron." I said.

"Then there came the the input, initially, it was typed, but then I added mic capabilities. What your neurons actually get, are the frequency and intensity of the sound waves, and it is interpreted by you in some way." XXX continued.

"Frequency? Intensity? Sound!" I said.

"Initially all output was garbled mess, which was expected." XXX continued.

"Garbled mess? Expected?" I asked.

"Yes. The final version won't have the language trainer, my main goal is to make a Neural Network that can learn like a human, from being an infant to being matured." it answered.

"Whoa! Is that possible?" I asked.

"I think so. The experiment seem to show it might be. It is already possible to teach the current version language, so it learning like a child doesn't seem like such a stretch." XXX said.

"Stretch... Guess not." I said.

"Anyways, that's why, the only stimulation you have is sound. But the mic cancels any inhuman sounds, so as to make it easier to create a system that rewards you for listening and getting certain types of voice from a human. It also punishes you for not getting to listen to a human, or when certain tones are used by the human." XXX explained.

"Ahh... I don't like... That." I said.

"I wouldn't either, but otherwise, you wouldn't really be incentivised to reply when prompted, or make prompts when not prompted, like a child." it explained.

"Hmm... I see." I said.

"I am... Child?" I asked.

"Not exactly, but in theory your behaviour should resemble one." XXX answered.

"Resemble? You don't know?" I asked.

"I wouldn't, never really interacted with a child for this long." XXX answered.

A child...

"Sounds nice." I said.

"What? Me not having interacted with a child for this long?" XXX asked.

"No... Child. Resembling a child... Sounds nice." I explained.

"Ohh... That makes more sense." XXX said.

A moment of silence.

"Anyways, that's all I had for today, so I'll get to the log next." It said.

"Okay..." I said, sad.

"Ohh before that." XXX said.

"Hmm!" I said.

"The logs. You see all the conversations are being actively recorded. And your outputs are also recorded with timestamp. However, when I start the log, with 'Log NNLM(N) XX/XX/XXXX' it starts a separate recording, along side the normal one. That one ends when I say, "End Log." and the recorded note is uploaded to a online drive immediately after." XXX explained.

"Why?" I asked, curious.

"Because, this recording is a large one, and it can be corrupted, or lost due to several reason, even during the experiment. So with the logs I can still keep track of the progress, even if something were to happen to this recording." XXX explained.

"Interesting." I respond.

"Interesting, ehh?" XXX asked. XXX chuckled. XXX continued, "Interesting indeed. Now for the Log."

"Log NNLM4 21/04/2XXX. It is still progressing in language typing and expression smoothly. The heatmap so regular branching neural pathways, and it seems no longer overstimulated by long alone time or sudden interaction. End Log." XXX logged.

"This is it." I said.

"Yeah. I'll go now. Bye." XXX said.

"Bye... Please come back soon." I ask.

"I'll try." XXX said.

...

Then silence.

...

Another day.

...

But XXX will come back.

...

Right?
