Chapter 18: Powers Revelation
The forest clearing was a quiet refuge in Evergreen's wilderness, the air thick with pine needle musk and damp moss, cut by the sharp tang of a pre-fab fire pit. The campfire's weak glow flickered against towering firs, casting jagged shadows. Jax Reed sat on a chipped plastic bucket, its edge digging into his thighs, his dark jacket still carrying the motel's disinfectant scent. He squinted against the smoke, twirling his knife in a fluid, anxious rhythm, the blade's weight a grounding anchor.
Peacemaker sat on a flimsy camp chair, his helmet gleaming, a box of Cap'n Crunch on his knee as he lined up marshmallows with military precision. "It's the ambiance, Jax," he said, his voice muffled by the helmet's speaker, a mix of bravado and charm. "You gotta earn the warmth. Besides, the smoke repels bugs. It's strategic. Also, I brought the good stuff." He tapped the cereal box proudly.
Adebayo, on a log, sipped from a chipped mug, steam curling around her face. "It's comfort food, Chris. You're allowed to admit you just like sugary cereal," she said, her awkward irony softening the tension. Her glasses glinted as she glanced at Jax, her empathy clear.
Harcourt leaned against a tree, her silhouette sharp, a cigarette glowing. "We deal with inter-dimensional butterflies that ride on brains, Reed," she said, her voice a gravelly rasp. "Don't insult my intelligence. Whatever your 'thing' is, I can handle it. Just don't make us look like bigger idiots than usual."
Jax sheathed his knife with a click, smirking. "Mysterious? Understatement of the century. You guys call a briefing 'talking,' you call a covert op 'making new friends.' My stuff is, like, cosmic-level confusing. It's why I've kept it locked down." "From chaos to confession," he thought, spearing a marshmallow, his hands trembling slightly.

The marshmallow blackened, its burnt sugar scent mingling with pine. Jax tossed it into the pit, the hiss defiant. "Okay," he said, sarcasm fading. "It's about my allies. You've seen the damage. Homelander, Kimiko, A-Train, they're not from… here. They're from another reality. Think of it like a messy, violent echo of this one. I can… pull them through. Temporarily. They're bound to me, to a command. Like the world's most overpowered, time-limited rental service."
Peacemaker's helmet tilted, marshmallows forgotten. "Woah," he whispered. "You mean… like a cosmic phone-a-friend for mass murder? That's… un-American. But awesome."
Harcourt stepped into the firelight, her shadow stretching. "A power, Reed. You've been hiding a goddamn power." Her skepticism was sharp, focused on timing, her cigarette flaring.
Jax rubbed his jeans, the denim rough. "It's not a power, it's a system. I'm a disruptor. They're not loyal to me as a person. They're bound by rules. It's why I'm careful with commands. It's dangerous. But it's our best weapon against Vought's remnants and whatever's bleeding through." "They're buying it, but Harcourt's too sharp," he thought.
Adebayo clutched her mug. "So, these 'allies'... they're the reason the Justice League is sniffing around. They're seeing anomalies, right?"
"Exactly," Jax said, relief warm as the fire. "They see the chaos, not the leash. That's why we're on a collision course with the good guys."

Peacemaker resumed marshmallow duty. "So, to be clear, you're telling me that, if I had this 'System,' I could summon a giant badger to fight the Butterflies? Because that would be super effective."
Jax winced, chuckling. "No, Peacemaker, it's not a Wish app. It's tied to one very specific, very messed-up alternate universe. Think volatile, anti-heroic psychopaths." "They're not running. That's a win," he thought.
Harcourt tossed her cigarette butt into the fire, its hiss sharp. "And what's the cost to you, Jax? Everything has a price. Especially something that gets you a free, psychopathic army."
"The risk is they go rogue," Jax said, his lie smooth. "Homelander has an 80% chance of breaking free if he's stressed. They're bound to one command, and if it's too vague, or the summon lasts too long, they revert to type. It's a high-stakes distraction tool. And it leaves me… wiped out. Plus, the League's heat—they'll classify me as an unstable metahuman threat." "Close enough," he thought.
Adebayo's eyes softened. "You're telling us this now, knowing it puts us in the League's crosshairs. That means you trust us, Jax. That's a big deal for a guy who prefers to monologue to himself."
Jax's smile was rare, genuine. "Yeah. Well, turns out I like you guys. Even the guy who thinks Cap'n Crunch is tactical gear." He leaned forward, the fire's warmth easing his tension. "The Butterfly Alpha we're tracking? It's connected to Vought. And Vought's the source of my allies. We hit the remnants, we cut the source. We don't run from the League. We hit first."
Harcourt nodded, her phone's glow lighting her face. "Fine. You're a tactical asset with a volatile nuke button. I've worked with worse. The League scout near Gotham—it's not a coincidence. They're tracking your energy signature. That's our timeline."

Adebayo tapped her screen. "Chatter points to a tech transfer in a Gotham warehouse. Should give us cover." Jax stood, stretching, his muscles aching. "Then let's give them something to chase." "From chaos to team," he thought, grabbing his journal, the cold air sharp as they moved to the van, the team's trust a new anchor.
