Chapter 19: League Interference
The Gotham safehouse, a clock tower maintenance room, was a shadowed crypt, its air thick with musty iron and dry cement dust. Jax Reed crouched beside a silent brass gear, his dark coat reeking of pine. The space heater's buzz barely dented the cold, and Peacemaker's snores from the next room were a strange comfort. Jax's binoculars, warm from his grip, scanned the city, their thermal readings glowing. He shivered, rubbing his gloved hands, the leather creaking.
"I hate Gotham," he muttered, breath fogging. "The whole place smells like industrial-grade sadness and wet concrete. Why is it always cold in Gotham?" "Gotham gloom matches my mood," he thought, twirling his knife.
Adebayo, on a splintered bench, didn't look up from her laptop. "Because it's a Gothic hellhole, Jax. Focus. The Butterfly echoes are centered on the old G.C.P.D. evidence storage building. High levels of residual Vought tech energy. But so is something else."
Jax's binoculars locked on a crimson-gold blur on the rooftop, trailing yellow energy. A Justice League scout—Flash proxy. "Sarcasm levels rising, but this is trouble," he thought.
[SYSTEM: JL SCOUT (FLASH PROXY) IDENTIFIED.]
[DANGER LEVEL: MEDIUM.]
[THREAT PRIORITY: IMMEDIATE.]
"Bingo. Speedster on the roof," Jax said, grabbing a soggy burrito from his bag, taking a resentful bite. "Looks like the Justice League's 'Flash proxy' came to ruin my day. Probably looking for a clean, non-violent arrest for the 'cosmic anomaly.'"
Adebayo whispered, eyes on her laptop's thermal feed. "He's setting up a quantum scanner. He's not here for a fight, Jax. He's here to catalogue the power residue—which will lead him to you. We need to disrupt him before he gets that data."
Jax swallowed, the burrito's taste lingering. "Okay, new plan. I can't use a brute like Homelander—too much collateral. I need a clean, decisive snatch-and-run. Someone with high Agility, minimal visibility." "Fast food delivery, here we go," he thought.
"Peacemaker, wake up. Time for some fast food delivery," Jax called, standing, boots grinding on the gritty floor.
[SYSTEM: CUMULATE AT 2.]
[SUMMON PROTOCOL ENGAGED.]
The rooftop air was a biting whip, carrying exhaust and the metallic tang of Gotham's grid. Jax materialized from the clock tower's shadow, facing the scout, a crimson blur assembling a glowing tripod device. The scout's mask gleamed, his speed-force aura humming.
Jax tapped the system. "Here goes nothing."
[SYSTEM: SUMMON PROTOCOL ENGAGED.]
[TARGET: A-TRAIN.]
[WILLPOWER CHECK: 50%.]
[COMMAND BOUND: SNATCH THE DOSSIER FROM THE SPEEDSTER'S DEVICE AND RETURN IT.]
[TIME LIMIT: 3-5 MINUTES.]
[DANGER LEVEL: HIGH.]
A white-blue flash erupted, and A-Train appeared, his speedsuit gleaming. "Yo, what the hell, man? I was mid-workout!" he snapped, his whine high-pitched. Spotting the scout, his ego flared. "Wait—is that a knock-off Flash? You gotta be kidding me!"
The scout froze, his aura intensifying. "Report. You're an unsanctioned anomaly, and you're disrupting an A.R.G.U.S. investigation," he commanded, voice sharp.
Jax grinned. "A-Train! Snatch the dossier, now!"
A-Train vanished in a sonic crack, the wind whipping Jax's coat. The tripod exploded into sparks, and A-Train reappeared, clutching a silver data chip. "Dossier secured, fastest man alive, like always."
The scout surged, a red vortex. "You! Unlicensed metahuman, deploying hostile elements in a classified zone! You are designated R-7, Rogue Anomaly! Stand down and explain this Vought presence!"
[SYSTEM: SUMMON TIME ELAPSED: A-TRAIN.]
[ROGUE WILLPOWER CHECK: FAILED (EGO FULFILLED).]
[SUMMON COMPLETE.]
[RESIDUAL ECHO: AGILITY +1.]
[CURRENT STATS: AGILITY 5.]
Jax pocketed the chip, his agility sharper. "Rogue? Nah, I'm just the guy with better delivery. Tell your boss to check his email for a complaint." He dove off the rooftop, catching a ledge with his knife, metal scraping as he swung into the alley, landing on damp cardboard, the garbage stench overwhelming.
[SYSTEM: VILLAIN HUNT: JL SCOUT DISRUPTION.]
[SUCCESS: +20 SP AWARDED.]
[CURRENT SP: 225.]
In the safehouse, the space heater's glow was feeble. Jax leaned against the clock's casing, sweating, pulling off his balaclava, its wool scratching. He tossed the chip to Adebayo, downing water, the cold soothing his throat. "Fast food delivery accomplished. Man, I hate speedsters. It's like fighting a narcissistic mosquito."
Adebayo slotted the chip, A.R.G.U.S. files flashing. Harcourt approached, arms crossed. "You earned the rogue designation, Reed. That file's a complete profile on the Butterfly remnant network—but look at the sub-file. They were tracking your energy signature."
The screen showed a crimson pulse tied to the remnants, and an orange pulse linked to Jax's summons. "My allies are their anomaly," Jax thought, wiping water from his chin. "They think I'm chaos for hire. Perfect. Keeps their focus off the mission."
Adebayo pulled up a sewer schematic. "This is the Alpha's command post. The League was planning a raid in forty-eight hours. This file's a blueprint."
[SYSTEM: STRATEGIC ALLIANCE: A.R.G.U.S. DOSSIER ACQUIRED.]
[+5 SP AWARDED.]
[CURRENT SP: 230.]
Jax leaned over the laptop, coat heavy with sweat. "We move in twelve hours. Hit the Alpha before the League or the Squad. Harcourt, Peacemaker takes the flank. Adebayo, you're on comms and breach points. I'm on recon in the sewer line." He tossed his journal aside, too wired to write, the team's purpose a new anchor.
[SYSTEM: RANDOM FLAVOR: SQUAD SCOUTING DOSSIER DETECTED.]
