My pulse spikes immediately, and despite his warning, I look back. I see a black sedan turn onto the street behind us with no headlights.
Lucius tuts once under his breath. "You never listen."
"You wouldn't like me if I did," I can't help but say.
He nods. "True."
The sedan tailing us speeds up.
"So… we're about to be in a car chase?" I chuckle darkly, and Lucius slams his foot on the accelerator before I finish the sentence.
The car jerks forward violently, my shoulder hitting the seat.
"Seatbelt," he says calmly.
I fumble with the strap a little, but ultimately click myself in without incident. When I'm buckled, I glance in the rearview and watch as the sedan behind us lunges.
A flash—the glint of a muzzle out the window.
Gunfire cracks the air, and glass explodes behind my head. A bullet bites into the rear door.
Lucius doesn't flinch; he just bares his teeth. It's definitely not a smile… It's something feral and unsettling.
