Chapter 5 - The Choice

"What the hell are you talking about?"

Peter turned and kicked.

He didn't need to look; he knew who it was. It was none other than Kraven the Hunter, the guy he'd just knocked out.

This guy's physical condition and willpower were indeed impressive. He'd recovered from the dizziness caused by the intense pain in just a moment.

However, these things were useless in the face of overwhelming force.

Shatter!

Kraven the Hunter was slammed into a nearby glass container, smashing the glass to pieces.

"Aaaah!"

He let out a terrified scream.

The spiders in the container swarmed over him, quickly covering him entirely and injecting their venom.

In a matter of moments, Kraven the Hunter was motionless.

His face, his clothes, even his body, were likely crawling with venomous spiders, making for a truly horrifying sight.

"Hey, listen, Spider-Boy, I think you could learn a thing or two from those black widow spiders about decisiveness," Jonah said from behind, "Although I often slander you in the newspaper, you know, it's my job. Actually, I quite admire you, but today, you're really disappointing!"

"Mercy is for the good; to be merciful to villains is to be violent to the good!"

Peter was silent for a moment, then turned and pursued the Green Goblin.

He wasn't a fool; on the contrary, he was very smart.

He understood the logic Jonah was laying down.

He just couldn't accept it for a moment.

Emotionally, he leaned towards what Aunt May had said before.

But his rationality, born from merging with Shadow Spider-Man, told him that Jonah was right.

This was the true way to deal with evil!

To prevent good people from getting hurt, evil-doers must be punished!

Some thoughts gradually took root in Peter's mind.

One day, they would grow into a towering tree!

Osborn was very familiar with the Underground Passage, even though he didn't come here often.

Because his job was to do "odd jobs" for various capitalists, and even high-ranking government officials.

For example, the matter of killing Shadow Spider-Man's uncle.

Adolphus Crane, the owner of three sweatshops that went bankrupt because Ben Parker helped organize protests, hired Green Goblin to get revenge on Ben Parker. At the same time, he bribed the deputy commissioner of the NYPD to ensure the police wouldn't interfere. He then used another sum of money to bribe the mayor of New York City.

The relationships involved were complex.

And Green Goblin, acting as a kind of "bagman," would face a swift and decisive attack if he ever caused problems or if some of the people involved decided to abandon him.

Green Goblin anticipated this day and had prepared an escape route for himself in advance.

He never expected that this escape route wouldn't be used for that purpose, but rather to escape Spider-Man's pursuit.

At this moment, Felicia, who was being held by Green Goblin, also launched a psychological attack with a sneer.

"It's no use, Osborn, it's all over!"

"Do you think your partners at City Hall will protect you after this?"

"No, they won't!"

"Everyone you've ever been connected to will shut you up permanently the moment you try to rat them out!"

"You're finished!"

Felicia's words were sharp, like knives stabbing into the Green Goblin's heart.

The Green Goblin's face darkened: "Shut up, Felicia!"

He was desperately trying to find an exit in the dim light.

It turned out that although he had memorized the routes down here many times before, he couldn't find the passages in his memory without a light source.

"Felicia, run!"

Whoosh!

A figure swooped in, and before Green Goblin could react, they grabbed him and slammed him to the ground.

"Surprise?"

Peter sneered.

However, Green Goblin didn't seem afraid. Instead, he sneered back, "So, the cute little Spider has caught the big bad wolf and thinks he's won, eh?"

"Then... before we end this farce, why don't we see who's under the mask!"

With that, Green Goblin reached for Peter's mask.

"No!" Peter quickly reached out to block him. In either world, he didn't want his identity revealed, as it could bring unimaginable consequences to his family.

Slap!

In the chaos, Peter's hand struck Green Goblin's face.

SPLAT!

The Green Goblin's face made a sound like tearing cloth, and was ripped apart.

Underneath the tattered skin, a hideous face covered in greenish-blue bumps was revealed!

"This!" Peter was shocked; he didn't understand why the Green Goblin's face was like this.

However, at this moment, the Green Goblin's quick and precise grab also tore off Peter's mask.

Looking at the face under Peter's mask, he said viciously, "So it's Yurick's useless little lackey?"

"What, kid, you've never seen a Freak Show before?"

Peter was still in shock: "Green Goblin... So this is..."

The Green Goblin's eyes revealed a strong killing intent and hatred: "My whole life... I was pelted with stones by other kids from a young age. I could only beg for a living at the Freak Show, being watched as a deformed monster, just to get a piece of black bread."

"But it's different now!"

"When they say Osborn's name, I hear respect, awe!"

"And the few who have seen this face... they'll know that one of us has to die!"

"So, are you ready to die, Spider-Man?"

The fully unleashed Green Goblin seemed to have endless power and began to struggle against Peter's strength!

Peter was stunned, and the Green Goblin pushed him away, almost causing him to fall on his rear.

Buzz~

At that moment, Spider-Sense triggered.

Peter instinctively tilted his head.

Bang!

A bullet whizzed past his head.

Green Goblin stared at him in shock, seemingly unable to believe he'd dodged the bullet at such close range.

It's like he knew it was coming!

The gunshot and the Spider-Sense had also awakened Peter.

He lunged forward again, using his web to bind Green Goblin.

"Come on, kill me!" Green Goblin struggled, but couldn't break free. He knew he was finished.

Peter slowly raised the gun. In his mind, the images of Uncle Ben's corpse and Yurick's corpse flashed before him. He heard Aunt May and Jonah's words echoing in his ears.

"...I don't want to live in a world where people are killing each other like animals."

"Mercy is for the kind, showing mercy to the wicked is violence against the good!"

"What should I do?" Peter murmured to himself, unsure if he was asking the high schooler version of himself, or the owner of the body he had merged with—the Shadow Spider-Man.

A thought gradually surfaced in his mind.

It seemed to be an answer from Shadow Spider-Man.

Peter suddenly raised his head, putting down the gun.

Bang bang!

In the Green Goblin's astonished gaze, Peter threw lightning-fast punches, breaking all of the Green Goblin's limbs.

Then, he leaned down, staring directly into the Green Goblin's eyes, and said, "You will be interrogated, and you will apologize to the public for everything you've done!"

And then, if they don't kill you, I'll send you off! Peter silently added in his mind.
