At this moment, on the performance stage—
Taskmaster had already realized something was wrong.
She noticed that this "Black Cat" girl's movements were soft and untrained. There wasn't even a trace of battle experience on her.
Clearly, this was not a seasoned fighter!
She glanced toward the audience.
Even someone like Taskmaster—who severely lacked common sense—could tell something wasn't right.
But… just a little.
She still hadn't figured out exactly what was wrong.
Thinking back to the banner she saw outside when she arrived:"The Amazing Spider-Man and His Black Cat Girlfriend."
Ah!
Black Cat is his girlfriend—so whether she's skilled or not doesn't matter.
What matters is "girlfriend."
So, as long as she captures Black Cat…
Spider-Man will show up!
Perfect logic!
Taskmaster's brain was clearly better at learning than at reasoning, but after thinking for a while, she finally sorted out that conclusion.
She turned back to Betty and pressed again:"Tell me—where is Spider-Man?"
"Hmph! If you want to harm my darling, you'll have to get through me first!"Betty struck another dramatic pose.
"Run, you dummy!"Peter stared anxiously from backstage.
He had already gotten Tony Stark's message and generally understood what Tony meant.
Right now, all Betty had to do was lure this "Taskmaster" downstage, and Peter could take her out in seconds.
But Betty thought this was all part of the performance. She stayed on stage, saying her lines seriously.
And the worst part?No one in the audience noticed anything wrong.Everyone thought this was just the original script!
Even those who knew the plot—like Mr. Harrington—saw the crowd enjoying it and saw how immersed Betty was, and slowly convinced themselves the script must have been revised last-minute.
"Since you won't talk, I'll pry your mouth open myself!"Taskmaster stepped forward and reached for Betty.
Betty froze for a moment—then actually reached back to grab her.
Peter nearly had a heart attack.
Betty thought this was staged and assumed she wouldn't get hurt. But Peter knew Taskmaster was dead serious from beginning to end!
If Betty got injured because of this, he'd never forgive himself!
He couldn't wait any longer.
Peter dashed out from backstage.Right before Taskmaster's and Betty's hands met, he reached in—one arm wrapping around Betty's soft waist to pull her aside, the other arm lifting to block Taskmaster's attack with his elbow.
"Darling, you're here~"Betty, falling into Peter's arms, blinked in surprise before rubbing her head lightly against his chest.
Perhaps she had… some very personal interpretation of the "Black Cat" role.
"Spider-Man…"Taskmaster muttered when she saw him—then immediately launched a fast assault.
Peter held Betty and stepped back several times."B—Black Cat! Go grab what you came for. I'll hold her off!"
He let Betty go.
"You are my sun and stars. I want to walk hand in hand with you!"Betty reluctantly stood up from Peter's arms.
Seriously? Now?!
Peter nearly groaned aloud. But seeing the audience below—even Aunt May was there!
If he didn't want to expose his identity, he had no choice but to keep playing along.
"You are my moon. When the scorching sun burns the sky and the stars shine bright, the moon does not hide—it moves in the shadows."Peter's brain spun several times before he managed to force out a matching line.
Translation: Go steal the gem and sneak backstage already.
Betty's eyes glimmered, and she was finally convinced.
By now, Taskmaster had closed in.
This time, she didn't attack barehanded. She swung her shield in a slicing motion.
The move looked familiar—one Captain America often used.Sometimes he would follow it by throwing the shield like a flying discus.
Peter bent sideways, dodging easily. One hand pushed upward, the other struck Taskmaster's ribs with a Wing Chun-style chain punch.
Clang!
A crisp impact.Taskmaster staggered back several steps.
Peter clenched his fist, hissing in pain.
She must be wearing some high-grade alloy armor. The defense was strong—and the recoil was even stronger. That punch sent enough feedback through his arm to numb his hand for a whole second before he recovered.
And to make it worse, this costume offered zero protection. It only hid his identity—and since it was Flash's measurements, some parts were too loose, others too tight, not fitting him well at all.
Whoosh—
Taskmaster hurled the shield.
This time, her attack was practically identical to Captain America's!
"So she really is a Taskmaster…" Peter realized.
With his reflexes, catching the shield would be trivial.
But he couldn't do that now.
With so many eyes watching—if he performed a "bare-hand shield catch," the situation would explode.
He sidestepped again, letting the shield pass—But just as it grazed by, he subtly bumped it with his body.
The slightest touch changed the shield's trajectory.
Instead of ricocheting back like a boomerang, it flew offstage, slipped through a gap in the curtains, and clattered somewhere backstage.
Taskmaster – Equipment -1
She clearly hadn't expected this.Captain America videos hadn't shown anyone doing something like that.
Taskmaster mentally noted this new counter-technique.Anyone willing to throw a shield at her? She'd like to try it now.
Peter politely declined that wish.
Then, following the noble tradition of returning the favor—Peter moved in to attack.
Pressing his hands to the ground, he flipped into a spinning motion, body turning like a wheel.
This was a capoeira combat move—and Peter loved it.
Plus, it was the perfect technique to handle Taskmaster without revealing superhuman strength.
Thud!Thud!
Peter's legs struck down one after the other.
Taskmaster blocked with her forearms, but the concealed force behind Peter's kicks still drove her back several steps.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the stage, "Black Cat" had finally taken the item from the safe.According to the script, the scene was supposed to transition now.
Peter exhaled in relief.
Next step: get Taskmaster backstage, then finish this quickly.
After regaining her footing, Taskmaster mimicked Peter's move, performing her own version of the "spinning wheel axe kick," sending both legs down toward him.
"She can copy this too?"Peter's mind flickered.
But he had far more experience with this move.He blocked with his arms, rotated his hands, caught Taskmaster's legs, and with controlled strength, tossed her to the side.
To onlookers, it simply looked like the villain lost balance and Spider-Man pushed her away.
Peter stepped back toward the curtain, conflicted. He was terrible at acting and had no idea what line he was supposed to say next.
