My eyelids fluttered open gradually. Everything seemed surreal at first—the rhythmic beeping of machines nearby, muffled conversations drifting through the door, the sharp scent of antiseptic filling my nostrils. I shifted my head to the side, and there he was.
My little miracle.
Nestled peacefully next to me in a soft blue blanket lay the most beautiful sight I'd ever witnessed. My heart filled instantly.
I extended my arms, carefully reaching for him, holding my breath as I drew him against my chest.
The instant my fingers made contact, tears flooded my eyes once more.
He was so small. So warm. So absolutely real.
I cradled my baby, gazing at him as though he contained every purpose for my being within his tiny, wrinkled fingers.
How could something so fragile, so delicate, contain such overwhelming love in such peaceful silence? I felt his heartbeat against me, gentle and rhythmic.
