Davina's POV
"What's gotten into you?" I snapped at Calista the second Mom whisked a bewildered Cooper outside to play.
I'd managed to smooth over Calista's earlier outburst by getting Cooper giggling with tickles and silly jokes. He was still too little to grasp what Calista had just blurted out—but that didn't excuse the fact that she had zero sense of when to keep her mouth shut.
Calista blinked at me, clearly caught off guard. Then she gave a slow nod, like she was trying to talk herself out of trouble. "That didn't come out right," she admitted. "But it doesn't make it any less true."
I stared at her like she'd lost her damn mind.
"Whether it's true isn't the issue. You don't say stuff like that when he's around. That's the whole point," I said, my voice cutting but trembling slightly.
Calista exhaled and nodded again. "You're right. Sorry about that."
I turned away, hoping we were done with this conversation.
