Chapter 5 - BEGINNINGS 1

Kendra noticed Nas' injuries when he tried to steal his breakfast from the kitchen in an attempt to retreat into his room. She pressed for answers, but he did not respond.

An angry and slightly frustrated Kendra called Victor who explained everything he knew. He was terrified of an angry Kendra. She asked Victor to take the morning off, opting to take Nas to school herself, ignoring her son's protest.

An angry Nas pleaded that his mom would only cause more trouble for him. Kendra completely ignoring him, went straight to the principal's office, Nas, a couple steps behind her.

At the office, they met the Ademolas seated opposite the principal, Mrs Ademola, a tiny woman, lunged at Nas, but she's blocked by Kendra who took a protective stance in front of her son. Mrs Ademola stood frozen as the woman who stood before her was at a towering height of 6 foot and 2 inches, robust, and very angry, she looked like she could swallow Mrs Ademola whole if she made the wrong move.

Mr Ademola, with a head full of uneven grey hairs helped his wife back to her sit, and allowed Kendra have his sit besides his wife while he stood on the other side of his wife, one hand on her shoulder as if to help her calm her nerves. Mrs Ademola, unable to unleash her fury on Nas, resulted to insults which greatly infuriated Kendra, and seemed to drain her husband of all energy.

The energy filled Mrs Ademola, in her shouting and jiration accused Nas of attacking their son, sending him to the hospital but Nas denied, speaking for the first time since he entered the office. Nasya confessed that it was their son, Ademola who attacked him in the back alley near the cinema, showing them his injuries. This revelation hurt and infuriated Kendra even more, as she clicked her tongue, slapped her laps with both palms, shook her head before slightly raising her shoulder, all these she did while shaking her legs. Maybe it was the pain that comes from not being able to protect her only child, maybe it's the frustration from the fact that this was the best she could do, complain to the school, anything else was outside her power, in other words, she was simply too powerless.

The Ademolas (mostly Mrs Ademola) swore that their son would never do such.

"He's a good kid, he'd never even hurt a fly" Mrs Ademola claimed between sobs.

According to her Nas had sent her son to the hospital for no reason.

Kendra had grown tired of this play the Ademolas had presented before her, she had other things to do, she'd made her case, said her piece and would leave it in the hands of the school, not wanting to further prolong the issue, she announced to everyone in the room, eyes fixed directly on the principal,

"Erhẹn has been a subject of continued bullying in your institution and my patience has grown thin. Knowing him, he would rather stay quiet about it and continue to suffer, but I cannot stand for that. I leave this case at your table Aurora" Kendra said, shocking the principal, forcing the previously nonchalant woman to sit up right

"how does she know that name" the principal thought

"Henceforth, for every child that comes after my own, I'll go after their parents, delivering 10 times the pain their kids inflicted on mine" Kendra declared as she stood from her seat, and walked towards the door.

"Like mother like son" Mrs Ademola scoffed "the only thing the entire family is good for is violence and prostitution. Now my innocent baby is laying, brutally injured, in the hospital. It's all that stupid duds fault. I wish he'd just get ran over by a truck or something" she cried

Kendra who was about leaving, one hand on the door knob, turned back, and walked towards Mrs Ademola, she took a bending position so as to reach Mrs Ademola's height, both hands placed on her waist, her face only a few inches away from Mrs Ademola's.

"Just as my son is not the first child to be born without magic, nor is he going to be the last, so also is your son not the first to be hospitalized, nor will he be the last, so deal with it" Kendra said in a low voice as if to whisper to Mrs Ademola, a creepy smile plastered on her round face.

"Or if you can't bare to see him like that, I don't mind sending you to join him, that is if you can bare loosing a few limbs" she added still smiling, slowly entering into a standing position.

The principal as if in a trance saw someone other than Kendra in Kendra's position, talking the exact same way, taking the exact same stance and having the exact same smile, a beautiful dark-brown skinned woman, the same height as Kendra, she had thick finely combed afro, a lean muscular but curvy build and scars all over her body.

The sky outside had turned a pitch black and the room began to shake, and when Kendra opened her eyes, her smile slowly faded as the honey brown color of her eyes became more prominent as if glowing.

"Idia" the principal muttered just enough for Kendra to hear, still stuck in her trance.

The Ademola could not hide their fear, they'd frozen solid to their seats, sweats streaking down the side of their faces, Mr Ademola slowly turned his face towards the principal as if to ask her to beg Kendra.

"Quell your anger, OLOI, even your son is terrified of you" the principal finally spoke, after letting herself a small chuckle.

Kendra took a long look at her and let's out a sigh, the principal seemed excited for some reason, and Kendra understood why.

"You finally remembered." Kendra thought as she smiled

"You're always so level headed" Kendra said scratching her head, the sky outside slowly going back to normal.

"I can't say I've always been level headed, I guess it comes with growing older and the loneliness that comes with it." The principal chuckled again, this time playing with her hair, brushing it with her fingers.

"I'd advice you to go home and take a long relaxing shower to calm your nerves. I'll make sure to settle things with the Ademolas" the principal said as she turned to look at the still petrified Ademolas, while trying hard to hold in her laughter.

"Thank you Aurora" Kendra smiled and turned toward the door with Nas in tow.

Kendra turned to look at the Ademola before turning to face the principal, a smirk on her face

"I'll be taking my leave" Kendra told her and they shared a smile.

"see you around" she added as the shut the door behind her and her son, laughing whole heartedly.

"Remember to always keep your head down" the principal said looking at the door Kendra and Nas had just gone through, a hint of sadness in her eyes and in her voice.

"What was that all about? I thought you could no longer use your magic, and what did she mean by keep your head down, how do you know principal Amara and since when was her name Aurora, and why don't you ever use your magic, everything I know about magic, you thought me even-though I could never use them.?" Nas asked

"Don't worry about it. You'll understand when the time comes" Kendra explained between laughter.

"You always say that. I know you've been hiding many things from me. Whenever I ask about my father you just say he died in an accident or say he left before I was born. I don't even know which lie to believe anymore" Nas complained

"Just trust me, it'll all make sense soon enough" Kendra stated.

Nas is still very shocked after what he'd witnessed, seeing his mom like that was a first for him, the mom he knew wasn't a mage but was rather a typical African mother who was always overbearing and curious about what he was and wasn't doing. She worked most days of the week but still found time to be with him, to teach him the basics of magic, help him polish his martial arts, teach him how to identify herbs and make potions. He knew she had many secrets but respected her enough to not ask about it, she'd leave the house most times for weeks and when she did come back, she'd be covered in bruises and injuries, all he could ever do was help her with herbs to create mixtures and medicine to help with the injuries, no questions asked.
