Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 Hunter

[Frightening reward: choose host]

[1. 10 points of fear]

[2. Mystery card]

"Fuck, you've got to be kidding me."

"It's not even a proper time to ask," I think as I watch the dog I had hit just catch up to the rest of the dogs and goblins chasing me

"Put two points into strength, and the rest into fear."

[Strength: raised from 12.6 to 14.6]

I leap back towards the riderless dog and stab it through the chest with a thrust of the dagger.

[You have killed a 1 skull monster: +0.5]

[Fear: raised from 2.4 to 10.4]

As I keep running I feel chills in my body, my senses triggered, I feel like I'm moving faster and everything around me is slower. "This is similar to adrenaline," I think as I keep running and observing the surroundings.

"System, place points in agility."

[Agility: raised from 9.21 to 9.71]

I jump swiftly and stab the dagger into the skull of the goblin that was shooting arrows at me.

[You killed a 1 skull monster: +0.5]

"Place it in agility."

[Agility: raised from 9.71 to 10.21]

I agilely dodge the assassin dog's bite, without taking distance, and stab the dagger into its temple.

[You have killed a 1 skull monster: +0.5]

"Place it in stamina."

[Stamina: raised from 11.1 to 11.6]

I keep running but this time the remaining goblin runs away with his killer dog. And my suitcase was already far from my sight, I approach the killer dog's body and take the Monstrous core out of it.

"The whole killer dog I could have traded for 10 black tokens, for the core I will only get 5 black tokens," I think and look at the dead goblin body.

I also take the core from the goblin, as it has a value of 3 black tokens.

[The host has awakened fear]

[The host can choose an ordinary profession].

"What is this ordinary profession?"

[They are basic level professions, by reaching 90 points in the fear quality you can choose a specialty, a special profession or a transformation]

"Alright. Show me the available professions," I indicate as I continue running towards Rodem city.

[(Mage) (Hero) (Craftsman) (Hunter) (Swordsman)

(Spearman) (Archer) (Painter) (Warrior) (Seamstress) (Butcher)

(Butcher)]

[Host, would you like to see the characteristics of the professions?]

"Only the mage, hunter, warrior and archer."

[Mage: allows the user to efficiently increase the quality of intelligence and fear]

[Mage: (Intelligence: +15) (Fear: +10)]

[Mage's Abilities: Magic]

[Hunter: enhances the user's senses].

[Hunter: (Resistance: +10) (Agility: +5) (Strength: +5)]

[Hunter Skills: (Tracking) (Stealth |Stealth |Blocked|)]

[Warrior: improves the user's physical condition and build to make him fit for combat]]

[Warrior: (Strength +15) (Fear +10)]

[Warrior's Abilities: Aura]

[Archer: improves the user's vision and accuracy]

[Archer: (Agility +15) (Stamina +5) (Strength: +5) (Fear +5)]

[Archer Skills: Lethal Marksmanship]

I quickly read the information on the four professions I had requested.

After reading, it seems to me that the hunter profession was the most versatile.

"I choose the hunter profession," I reply in my mind.

[Synchronizing hunter profession with the host's body.]

As I continue running and scanning the surroundings to make sure no more monsters follow me, I notice how my senses become even sharper than when I had awakened, my speed increases and much of the exhaustion disappears.

"I chose correctly," was the first thought in my mind.

I can now hear the sound of the wind and the changes occurring in the surroundings, my vision also improves considerably.

When several minutes passed I could see bushes scattered in the barren environment, I am attentive to each bush while running to avoid a possible ambush by a monster.

Further ahead some trees began to appear, I run and run, until I manage to spot the walls of the city Rodem which are of a grayish color and somewhat blackish in some parts.

I look around, after checking that there are no monsters I slow down the speed with which I am running and I head to a brown iron gate of more than three meters high.

I raise my hands as I approach the gate, because in this city practically devoid of rules, it is very likely that any possible threat will be exterminated in an instant.

••••

While I wait, I look around, I have not yet received the reward for having survived, which tells me that I am still in danger. I see how a rectangular window opens in the door, and a man from the other side of the door asks me in a hoarse voice:

-Who are you? Why are you here?

-I am an aspiring hunter, I come from the city of White Clover, the train in which I was traveling suffered a breakdown and stopped more than an hour from here. Here is my identification. -I answer and hold up my ID so that the man on the other side of the door can read it. -My ID says I'm an aspiring F-rank hunter, but I recently reached E-rank, it was that that allowed me to arrive safely at the gate of this city.

I'm being explicit to avoid misunderstandings or being mistaken for a shape-shifting monster named Mimic or a Doppelganger. I hope it works out.

-Hold on a moment. I'll talk to the officer in charge of bringing people into the city.

"Sure, I'll wait calmly, I'm in the safest place in the world, take your time," after thinking that, I just nodded, and said:

-I will wait.

Since I don't have much to do, I stretch my muscles to relieve the tension generated after a long run.

When I finish stretching, I sit down and lean against the wall next to the "iron door".

Immediately the image of the train, the gray-haired woman and her twin brothers come back to my mind. After which I think, "I did what I could, I reported the situation in the city as soon as I arrived, I can do no more with my current power."

This world makes it clear that one mistake can be fatal. After being chased by those goblins I realized that if I had taken one or both of the twins with me, all three of us would have died in the midst of the sudden ambush and chase.

"I really did read stories with optimistic beginnings, but my story will have a rather twisted beginning and development, I now know, because I am quickly adapting to this world. I'm a survivor who likes to thrive, always have been."
