Chapter 4 - The Weight of Loss

On a hospital bed, a young eight-year-old boy lay on it; his face was dry, showing that he had cried his tears out.

A drip beside him, dressed in hospital clothes, his closed eyes showed that he was still asleep or unconscious.

Not far from him, was a young man walking up and down, his eyes lingering on the young body. Every few seconds, he would sigh, shaking his head, watching the young boy.

His entire expression was downcast as he was worried about the young boy.

An unknown man entered the room, wearing a white lab coat and glasses, with a thermoscope wrapped around his neck.

"Doctor, how's he doing, and when will he wake up?" He asked the doctor who just entered the hospital ward at the moment.

"In a few minutes, he should wake up, but he has some damage to his mental health. He's a young child; I hope you stop giving him traumas," the doctor advised.

The young man tried to defend himself.

He chuckled bitterly. The young boy just found out about the death of his parents, which caused all of this, but the doctor has left the ward.

"Hmmm…" The young man heard a murmur, turned back, and looked at the young boy whose eyes were opening.

Matt felt a bright light hindering his vision. "Is this Heaven?" This was the first thought that came to his mind.

But as he regained his sight, he saw the ceiling of the hospital ward, looking at Uncle Ben's face that came within his view.

"You young child, you almost gave me a heart attack." Uncle Ben heaved a sigh of relief, seeing that Matt had woken up.

"It's been a day, if not we were near you..." He shook his head with a sigh, "Are you trying to kill yourself?"

Even though Uncle Ben was talking to Matt, Matt didn't hear anything; his heart felt void, his brain looked as if it couldn't function, and his entire body was in breakdown.

Uncle Ben felt no response from him; he looked at Matt, his hollow eyes void of light.

He could see that Matt had lost all reason to live. He never expected the news of the parent's death would impact Matt like this, making him want to leave life.

Uncle Ben knew he had to do something before it was too late. "Are you really planning on giving up on your life? You didn't even ask what caused their death."His words sparked a bit of light in Matt's eyes, but they turned bleak and hollow.

When Uncle Ben saw that nothing had changed, he felt helpless before he sighed, "Then what about your sister? Are you planning on leaving her too?"It was at this moment, Matt's finally moved; tears dropped from his eyes as he cried.

"Mom… Dad…" He muttered in a sad voice, their smiles kept flashing in his mind.

He remembered the letter he read and the words, with the promise he made with his parents, that he would make sure he would protect his sister from any harm.

This sparked the light in his eyes even though the sorrow in his heart is heavy. He slowly looked around, taking a seat on the bed.

"Where is my sister, Uncle Ben?" he asked, his eyes wandering the ward once again.

Uncle Ben grinned, "Do you know how long you have been unconscious? It's been a day. If not that we rushed you to the hospital, you might have died," he complained.

When Matt heard this, he shook, standing up from the bed. "Mia, she needs me." He wanted to leave the hospital, wanting to remove the drip.

"Don't worry, she's in my place without any problem. You just woke up; don't stress yourself." Uncle Ben tried to calm him down.

"She will be lonely; she only has me left, and she's the only family I have left," Matt was adamant. One could see he was worried about his sister.

Uncle Ben looked at his determined face; he hoped their parents death would help him for the better.

He then took Matt the doctor tried to stop him because Matt wasn't fully healed, and Uncle Ben should stop stressing him.

He attempted to explain to the doctor, but Matt said it all, which made them able to leave.

At Uncle Ben's house, it was a luxurious mansion with maids, guards, and cooks, covered with the elegance of the rich. Matt was surprised by this, wondering about the background of the uncle beside him and why they lived in such a house before.

He later took that off his mind as they entered the living room of the mansion.

"Let me go call she's playing with Eira upstairs," Uncle Ben said, heading up the stairs, while Matt just sat down, his head drooping down in thought.

"Big Brother," the shout of a young girl woke him from his thoughts. He looked at Mia running towards him; he felt as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his body.

He unconsciously smiled, opening his arm wide open. Mia jumped into it, and Matt found his heart gaining itself back.

"I miss you, Big Brother," Mia said. Her words made him calm down, his eyes getting watery as he realized he still has someone to take care of and protect.

He also heaved a sigh of relief when he saw that she was okay.

Uncle Ben also saw this; he chuckled slightly, "Do you expect us to hurt her? I and your parents are closer than you think. I would never harm their children.

Matt just smiled; now that his parents are dead, he is vigilant against everybody "Matt, how are you doing?" Aunt Sylvia came down the stairs with Eira beside her.

"Everything is okay, Aunty Sylvia." He smiled.

Mia, who was beside him, felt curious about something: "Big Bro, where did you go? Aunty Sylvia said that you went to see Mum and Dad, but where are they? Did they not come back with you?"

Matt looked at her, opening his mouth to speak, but he couldn't stop himself from crying. Tears dropped his face; he felt all strength lost, his heart grieving in sorrow and pain, and his entire body felt foreign to him.

"Big Brother, why are you crying?" Mia felt confused about why Matt burst into tears.

Uncle Ben and Aunt Sylvia looked at each other, their gazes turned to each other.

Aunt Sylvia stepped forward. "Mia, don't worry, your dad and mom had traveled; they would come back in a few days, don't worry. Am I right, Matt".

Matt who was crying, nodded at her words; he knew they were trying to keep it from his sister, as she was too young to bear the news of their parents death.

Even though Mia felt confused about what happened, she nodded.

After Matt had calmed down, Uncle Ben called him towards one side, "So what's your next step, and how do you plan your sister's life and that of yours?"

Matt fell into thought, hearing this.

He looked at Uncle Ben. "Uncle Ben, can I ask how my parents died?"

Uncle Ben looked at Matt before sighing, "I have no idea how they died, but your parents are Requiem Masters; I'm sure you should know that."Matt's expression was shocked when he heard this, looking at Uncle Ben.

Requiem Master, it takes formidable power, talent, and requiem to be able to become one.

"Uncle, are you also one?" His eyes shone with light.

Uncle Ben nodded, "Not only me, but your aunty is one; that's also where I and your parents knew each other.""You know, every year, children at age 12 would undergo an awakening of their talent. If you can awaken a good talent and become strong, then you can investigate your parents death," Uncle Ben continued.

When Matt heard this, he clenched his fist together. "Ok, Uncle."

"That's great; I will take you to where you will undergo your awakening," Uncle Ben promised.

He looked at Matt's determined expression. Even though he knows more information about their death, he wants this to be a goal for Matt so that he would have another purpose than protecting and taking care of his sister.
