Catherine's POV
I looked at the man he called his father and I realised I had known little while I was doing everything to satisfy my father. There were many powerful and rich people that I am definitely unaware of.
I was still still struck by how the other wealthy people were trying to get close to the old man but they were not permitted by his bodyguards and they could only stared at him from afar.
I have no idea how long I have stared lost in thought until I felt a light weight over my hand.
I turned to look at Gerald and his face pulled into a smile.
"Pay attention". He said softly and a blush of embarrassment crept up my face.
The host returned to the stage and introduced the event to us and because of him I'm able to know this is a charity event that always takes place each year and overseen by the Dalkeith family.
To impress the old general, a lot of wealthy and rich families always made extra efforts to attend and make donations to several organisations and orphanages.
I was looking at the rest of the guests until my eyes landed on my parents. They had also arrived, they had taken seats beside Anna and Dane.
Our eyes met and I saw the look of disbelief in my Dad's eyes as if to reprimand me for not acting accordingly and Mum beside him looked like she had seen a ghost.
Maybe I was a shadow of my old self, I want to be exactly that to them. Unrecognisable and shocking to behold.
Gerald stood up from beside me to give a speech.
And I watched in admiration as he commanded everyone's attention.
Remembering how he had mentioned that he wanted to get back at those that wronged him, I wondered what he meant. How could someone like him have those that could still wrong him?
Donations started and everyone was trying to give as high as they could. My father's eyes went to me again as he came forward to give his donation. He frowned and looked away.
Next was Dane, the look on his face was comical. He was probably wondering what I was doing sitting beside Gerald Dalkeith with bodyguards around us but I returned his gaze with levelled eyes.
No smile or awkwardness, just a cold stare back at him. The urge to look at him with disgust chewed at me but I decided not to pay anymore attention to him.
The main event ended and as the General prepared to leave, Gerald led me towards him.
"Father". He greeted and bowed slightly. I did the same unsure of what to do.
His seasoned eyes traveled to me, they were hard and emotionless. He stared at me for a few seconds and back at Gerald.
"And who is this Miss?" He asked.
"She is my wife". Gerald replied with a proud smile. His father looked back at me and stretched out a hand which I accepted immediately.
"Is he treating you well?" He asked with a frown and Gerald chuckled beside me.
I nodded and could not believe he didn't even care that he had called me his wife.
"Bring her home". He said and turned to leave with his bodyguards keeping the people away from him.
Gerald put a hand on my lower back to lead me back out of the hall.
And eyes were on us all the way to the car, all the reporters were now wilder than earlier.
The light from their cameras flashed like crazy as they shuttered several times every minute.
Just how rich and powerful are these people?
The car Gerald led me to was different from the one I came in and I wasn't supposed to be impressed but I was.
He came in after me and our car left the place with reporters chasing after us.
"I'm sure my face would be on the news by tomorrow morning". I murmured but it was only my thoughts and I have no idea I had said that out loud.
"Don't worry there won't be any." He replied with a smile.
I facepalmed but smiled back at him, there were several questions I needed answered too but for now I'm still satisfied by the look on my Dad's face.
He would never have imagined that I would show up here, but this is just the beginning. I would become impossible for him to ignore.
"I have a few questions, can I ask?" I spoke up suddenly and he turned to me. If I have power within my reach why don't I use it?
"Can it wait till we get home?" He asked and I nodded.
We got home and he helped me out of the car. And instead of letting go, he intertwined our fingers.
I looked down at our hand in surprise and back up at him and he smiled without knowing what was amiss until he realised.
"Oh, I'm sorry!" He pulled away quickly and smiled awkwardly.
"It's fine". I muttered. He had done that out of habit, I'm very sure.
He walked a few steps ahead and I couldn't help but wonder what he had in plan before he married me. I sighed and went in after him.
I was undressing when my phone started ringing like crazy, I knew without doubt who the calls were from.
I ignored the device for a while until it became too loud for me to ignore.
Dane's name was flashing on the screen.
"Dane?" This is a surprise. I was expecting Dad or Mum to call, not him.
"Cathy, what are you doing?". He asked as soon I tapped on the answer icon. The accusation in his voice made me frown.
"Did you hit your head?
How is what I'm doing any of your fucking business?" I asked, cussing at him. That caught me by surprise, I have never cussed at anyone before. He went silent and I ended the call without a second thought.
