Chapter 26 - The Quiet After

Hawkins is quieter now.

Not perfect.

Not innocent.

But breathing again.

The lab is sealed.

Mr. Kelley's face is on every newspaper.

"COUNSELOR ARRESTED IN POISONING SCHEME."

Parents are furious.

Students are shaken.

But the fear?

It's different now.

It has a face.

And faces can be fought.

Hopper's Porch

Hopper stands on his porch with a beer in his hand.

Nancy sits beside him on the steps.

"You okay?" she asks.

Hopper grunts.

"Ask me in a month."

Nancy smiles faintly.

"You did good."

Hopper looks out at the quiet street.

"They did."

He nods toward the Wheeler house.

"They're stronger than we think."

Nancy follows his gaze.

Softens.

"Yeah."

Jason

Jason Carver doesn't go back to being king.

He walks the halls differently now.

Quieter.

People whisper when he passes.

He doesn't care.

He stops one day beside Lucas's locker.

Lucas tenses.

Jason clears his throat.

"I was wrong."

Lucas blinks.

Jason swallows hard.

"I let someone turn me into a weapon."

Lucas studies him.

Then nods once.

"Don't let it happen again."

Jason nods back.

And walks away.

Not redeemed.

But not blind anymore.

Steve & Lena

Family Video.

Afternoon sunlight through the windows.

Steve is stacking tapes when Lena walks in.

She hesitates.

"Hi."

Steve looks up.

Smiles automatically.

"Hey."

She fidgets with her sleeve.

"I, um… wanted to say thanks."

Steve leans on the counter.

"For?"

"For not treating me like I was fragile."

Steve shrugs.

"You weren't."

She laughs softly.

"You stood in front of me every time."

Steve's ears go pink.

"Yeah, well… that's kind of my thing."

She smiles.

And this time?

It's calmer.

Not flustered.

Not desperate.

Just warm.

"Maybe next time," she says gently, "we fight side by side."

Steve blinks.

Then grins.

"Deal."

From the back room, Robin whispers to herself:

"He's growing up. I hate it."

Basement — One Last Time

The Wheeler basement feels different.

Not like a war room.

Like a memory.

Dustin is rambling about how he hacked half the lab systems.

Eddie is exaggerating everything dramatically.

Max is teasing Lucas.

Jonathan is leaning against the wall, camera in hand.

Nancy is laughing at something Robin said.

Hopper stands awkwardly near the stairs.

And Mike?

Mike is sitting beside Will.

Close.

Not hiding it.

Will nudges him gently.

"You're staring."

Mike smirks.

"Can you blame me?"

Will rolls his eyes—but he's smiling.

The noise upstairs fades.

The room empties gradually.

Until it's just them.

Mike & Will — Solid

The basement is quiet now.

Soft lamp glow.

Familiar space.

Will sits cross-legged on the floor.

Mike sits in front of him.

Neither speaks at first.

Will finally whispers:

"It feels weird."

Mike tilts his head.

"What does?"

"Being… okay."

Mike smiles softly.

"Yeah."

A pause.

Will looks down at his hands.

"I thought if I ever told you, I'd lose you."

Mike leans closer.

"You almost did."

Will looks up sharply—

Mike smiles gently.

"Because I almost ran."

Will's breath catches.

"But you didn't."

Mike shakes his head.

"No."

He reaches out.

Takes Will's hand.

Firm.

Certain.

"I was scared."

Will nods slowly.

"I know."

Mike swallows.

"But I'm more scared of pretending."

Silence.

Then Will leans forward.

Their foreheads touch.

Soft.

Real.

"You don't have to pretend with me," Will whispers.

Mike's voice is steady now.

"I'm not going to."

Will searches his face.

"For real?"

Mike smiles.

"For real."

And this kiss?

It's not rushed.

Not desperate.

Not adrenaline.

It's slow.

Intentional.

Like they're choosing each other.

When they pull back—

Mike rests his forehead against Will's.

"You're not a weakness."

Will's eyes shine.

"Good."

Mike smiles softly.

"You're my favorite thing."

Will laughs quietly.

"That's so cheesy."

"Yeah."

Mike shrugs.

"I don't care."

They sit there for a long time.

Hands intertwined.

No fear of who might see.

No shadows watching.

Just quiet.

Just them.

Outside, Hawkins settles into evening.

Streetlights flicker on.

Cars pass lazily.

Inside the Wheeler basement window—

Two silhouettes sit close together.

Unbothered.

Unhidden.

Not perfect.

Not untouched.

But stronger.

And somewhere, miles away—

A black sedan drives down an empty highway.

Inside—

Dr. Martin Brenner watches the road ahead.

Unsmiling.

Unfinished.

But for now?

Hawkins is quiet.

And love—

Love won.
