Chapter 25 - Burn It Down

The Wheeler basement is empty.

But on the security feed inside the lab—

A digital countdown blinks red.

09:42

Dr. Kelley watches the screen calmly.

Brenner stands behind him.

"You're certain?" Brenner asks.

Kelley doesn't look away.

"They chose defiance."

Brenner nods slowly.

"Then we escalate."

Tires screech outside the lab.

Nancy jumps out first.

"Sub-basement entrance is on the east wing!"

Jason follows without hesitation.

"I know the way."

Steve checks his grip on the metal pipe.

Robin mutters:

"I cannot believe we are doing this again."

Mike grabs Will's hand as they run.

No hiding now.

No fear.

Just urgency.

Hopper strains against the chair.

Wrists bleeding.

He twists hard—

Wood splinters.

The chair leg snaps.

He hits the ground—

Rolls—

Grabs a loose metal bar.

The door opens.

A guard steps in.

Hopper swings.

The guard drops.

Hopper stumbles into the hallway.

Breathing hard.

"Kids…"

The group descends a narrow staircase.

Cold air hits them.

Dustin whispers:

"Why does it feel like we're walking into a villain monologue?"

Eddie mutters:

"Because we are."

At the bottom—

A steel door.

Jason steps forward.

"Inside."

Steve nods.

"Let's end it."

The door bursts open.

Kelley turns slowly.

Calm.

Unbothered.

"You came."

Nancy steps forward.

"You're done."

Kelley sighs.

"You misunderstand."

He gestures to the monitor.

The Wheeler basement countdown.

04:17

Will's stomach drops.

"…Mike."

Mike's voice shakes.

"My mom."

Nancy goes pale.

"That's our house."

Kelley smiles faintly.

"You shouldn't have interfered."

Jason lunges.

"You killed her!"

Kelley steps aside effortlessly.

Jason crashes into a table.

Kelley's voice is cold now.

"Grief made you loud. Loud made you useful."

Jason looks up.

Something breaks inside him.

"You used me."

"Yes."

Simple.

Clinical.

Jason's face twists—

But not into rage.

Into clarity.

He stands slowly.

"You don't get to touch anyone else."

Guards flood the room.

Steve swings first.

Pipe connects.

Robin shouts.

Max kicks.

Lucas tackles someone.

Eddie throws a tray.

Dustin ducks under a punch.

Nancy fights like fury incarnate.

Mike shields Will instinctively.

Kelley backs toward a control panel.

Calm.

Always calm.

He presses a button.

The lab lights flicker.

The timer drops to 02:58.

Hopper bursts through another entrance.

Gun raised.

"NOBODY MOVE!"

Kelley freezes.

Finally.

Hopper's voice shakes with rage.

"Call it off."

Kelley tilts his head.

"Or what?"

Hopper fires into the control console.

Sparks explode.

The monitor dies.

Silence.

No more timer.

Nancy gasps.

"Did that—"

Dustin stares at the dead screen.

"It stopped."

One guard lunges toward Max.

Jason steps in.

Takes the hit.

Punch connects hard.

Jason drops to one knee—

But swings back.

Hard.

He knocks the guard unconscious.

Lucas grabs him.

"You okay?"

Jason nods weakly.

"Guess I owed you."

Max stares at him.

Not forgiveness.

But something close to understanding.

Kelley backs against the wall.

No escape.

No smile now.

Nancy steps forward.

"You targeted girls who trusted you."

Kelley's jaw tightens.

"They were unstable."

Will steps forward.

"They were hurting."

Mike stands beside him.

"You told them it would be quiet."

Kelley looks at Mike.

Studies him.

"And you think your attachment is strength?"

Mike squeezes Will's hand.

"Yes."

Kelley laughs softly.

"You will suffer for that."

Hopper slams him against the wall.

"No."

His voice is deadly calm.

"You will."

Police sirens grow louder outside.

For real this time.

No manipulation.

No control.

Kelley looks around.

Calculating.

Then—

He smiles faintly.

"You stopped this phase."

Nancy's stomach drops.

"…Phase?"

Kelley's eyes gleam.

"You still don't understand Hawkins."

Hopper cuffs him hard.

"I don't care."

Outside.

Flashing red and blue lights.

Kelley in handcuffs.

Jason sitting on the curb, bruised.

Paramedics checking people.

Brenner?

Gone.

Vanished in the chaos.

Nancy whispers:

"He slipped away."

Hopper nods grimly.

"He always does."

Steve sits on the hood of a car.

Lena runs into him without thinking.

Wraps her arms around him.

He freezes—

Then hugs back gently.

"I'm okay," he murmurs.

She doesn't let go.

Robin watches with a smirk.

"Yeah. He's doomed."

The group stands together under flashing lights.

Exhausted.

Alive.

Will looks at Mike.

"You didn't let go."

Mike smiles faintly.

"Not planning to."

Will leans into him.

No hiding now.

In front of everyone.

Jason watches.

Says nothing.

Just nods once.

Different now.

Quieter.

Nancy approaches them.

"You two okay?"

Mike nods.

Will squeezes his hand.

"We are."

Police cars pull away.

The lab is sealed.

Kelley taken.

Jason released quietly.

Hopper stands beside Nancy.

"It's over."

Nancy exhales.

"Is it?"

Across the street—

A black sedan watches from the shadows.

Inside—

Dr. Martin Brenner sits in silence.

Unbothered.

Uncaught.

He looks at a folder in his lap.

Inside—

Photos.

Of Mike.

Of Will.

Of the entire party.

He closes it gently.

And drives away.
