Chapter 24 - The People You Trust

The black sedan idles outside the Wheeler house.

Engine ticking.

Headlights off now.

Watching.

Inside—

Steve's hand is on Lena's shoulder.

"Stay down," he whispers.

Robin crouches beside the couch.

"That is not Amazon."

Dustin peeks through the blinds.

"…That's the same model car that was parked outside the lab."

Nancy steps forward slowly.

"Everyone upstairs. Now."

Jason steps beside the window.

His jaw tightens.

"That's not Brenner."

Lucas whispers:

"Then who?"

The car door opens.

A man steps out.

Neat coat.

Calm posture.

Familiar face.

Will's stomach drops.

"…Mr. Kelley."

Silence.

The school counselor.

The gentle one.

The one who told grieving girls they were strong.

The one who "listened."

Max's voice is ice.

"He was always around."

Nancy's hands shake.

"He signed outreach forms."

Dustin whispers:

"He knew everything about us."

Steve mutters:

"Okay. So this is bad."

Mr. Kelley walks toward the house.

Slow.

Unhurried.

He raises a hand—

And knocks.

Inside the Lab — Hopper

Hopper strains against the restraints.

The door creaks open.

Mr. Kelley steps inside the room.

But now—

He's not smiling gently.

He's smiling knowingly.

"You always underestimate quiet people," Kelley says calmly.

Hopper's voice is gravel.

"You killed them."

Kelley tilts his head.

"They were fragile."

Hopper roars:

"They were kids!"

Kelley's expression hardens.

"They were unstable. We simply accelerated what was inevitable."

Hopper's eyes burn.

"You poisoned them."

Kelley shrugs faintly.

"They were offered escape."

Brenner watches silently from the corner.

Observing.

Kelley steps closer to Hopper.

"You know what makes grief dangerous?"

He leans in.

"It spreads."

Hopper spits at him.

Kelley wipes his cheek calmly.

"You're emotional. That's why you fail."

Wheeler House

Nancy opens the door before Kelley can knock again.

Her chin is raised.

"What are you doing here?"

Kelley's smile is perfect.

"I was worried about you, Nancy."

Jason steps forward.

"Don't."

Kelley's eyes flick to him.

"You look tired, Jason."

Jason's jaw trembles.

"You used me."

Kelley doesn't deny it.

"You were loud. Loud people are useful."

Max's hand curls into a fist.

"You're sick."

Kelley's eyes drift—

And land on Lena.

There.

A pause.

His smile widens slightly.

Lena's stomach drops.

Steve notices.

He steps directly in front of her.

"Not happening."

Kelley speaks gently:

"She's very anxious, isn't she?"

Lena's breath stutters.

"You've been watching me."

Kelley smiles.

"I watch everyone."

Robin mutters:

"Okay, that's officially serial killer behavior."

Nancy's voice is steady but shaking underneath.

"You're not taking anyone else."

Kelley's expression cools.

"Oh, I don't need to."

He glances at Mike and Will.

"And neither does he."

Silence.

Mike's stomach drops.

"…What?"

Kelley studies them.

"You two are… volatile."

Will steps closer to Mike without thinking.

Mike doesn't move away.

Kelley's smile sharpens.

"Strong attachments are weaknesses."

Steve snaps:

"Okay, we're done."

He shoves Kelley backward off the porch.

"Get off the property."

Kelley doesn't fight.

He just straightens his coat.

And says softly:

"It's already begun."

He walks back to the sedan.

Drives away.

No rush.

Because he knows something they don't.

Basement

The door slams shut.

Everyone is shaking.

Nancy turns.

"He's escalating."

Jason nods.

"He thinks we won't fight back."

Eddie steps forward.

"Then let's prove him wrong."

Dustin spreads lab maps on the table.

"There's a sub-basement."

Lucas frowns.

"You're sure?"

Dustin nods.

"It's not on public blueprints."

Nancy's stomach tightens.

"That's where they're holding Hopper."

Jonathan loads a camera bag.

"I'm going."

Robin nods.

"Same."

Steve looks at Lena.

"You are not coming."

Lena opens her mouth—

He shakes his head.

"No. Not this time."

Her eyes sting.

"…You don't trust me."

Steve softens.

"I trust you."

A beat.

"I don't trust them."

Lena swallows.

"…Come back."

Steve smiles faintly.

"Count on it."

As everyone gears up—

Mike grabs Will's wrist.

"Hey."

Will looks up.

Mike's voice is steady now.

"I'm not letting him use us."

Will nods.

"He thinks we're weak."

Mike shakes his head.

"No."

He steps closer.

"He's wrong."

Will searches his face.

"Are you sure?"

Mike takes his hand openly.

In front of everyone.

"I don't care who sees."

Silence falls.

Dustin blinks.

"…Oh."

Robin's eyes widen.

Steve stares for a second—

Then smirks.

"About time."

Max smiles softly.

Jason watches, quiet.

Not judging.

Just processing.

Will's voice is barely there.

"You're sure?"

Mike leans in.

Not rushed.

Not panicked.

And kisses him again.

Gentle.

Certain.

When they pull apart—

Mike says quietly:

"Now we fight."

Inside the Lab

Hopper's wrists bleed against the restraints.

Kelley circles him.

"You think you're the hero."

Hopper growls:

"I'm the only thing standing between you and those kids."

Kelley kneels.

Voice calm.

"No."

He gestures upward.

"They are."

Hopper's stomach drops.

"What did you do?"

Kelley smiles faintly.

"Ask yourself why I went to the Wheeler house."

Hopper's blood runs cold.

The party loads into cars.

Engines roar.

They head back toward the lab.

Toward war.

And inside the lab—

A monitor flickers on.

Showing the Wheeler basement.

Empty now.

On the screen—

A timer begins counting down.
