Chapter 23 - The Next Phase

Sirens scream in the distance.

The lab lights flicker behind them.

The kids are breathless on the grass.

Steve grabs Dustin by the shoulders.

"Are you hurt?"

Dustin shakes his head rapidly. "No—no—Hopper—"

Will spins toward the building.

"He's still inside."

Nancy bursts out of a side door, hair wild, breathing hard.

"Hopper didn't make it."

Silence crashes down.

Mike's stomach drops.

"What do you mean he didn't make it?"

Nancy's voice is tight.

"He told me to run."

Max whispers:

"They took him."

Hopper wakes up in a chair.

Hands bound.

Cold concrete room.

Dim light.

And across from him—

Dr. Martin Brenner sits calmly.

Watching.

"You are persistent," Brenner says softly.

Hopper spits blood to the side.

"You're dead."

Brenner tilts his head.

"You think this ends with me?"

Hopper's jaw tightens.

"You poisoned children."

Brenner's voice is level.

"They volunteered."

Hopper roars:

"They were grieving!"

Brenner leans forward.

"Exactly."

Silence.

Hopper's blood runs cold.

"This town," Brenner continues, "has always needed shaping."

"You don't shape grief," Hopper growls. "You exploit it."

Brenner smiles faintly.

"Sometimes the two are the same."

Jason is sitting on the ground outside the lab, wrists scraped, eyes hollow.

Police are beginning to flood the area.

He stares at the building like it betrayed him.

Steve approaches cautiously.

"Jason."

Jason doesn't look up.

"He told me I was useful."

Steve exhales.

"Yeah."

Jason's voice cracks.

"I thought I was protecting her."

Max steps forward, sharp.

"You were chasing the wrong enemy."

Jason looks up slowly.

"Did he—"

His voice shakes.

"Did he kill Chrissy?"

Nancy answers quietly:

"Yes."

Jason's face crumples in a way that doesn't look like rage.

It looks like collapse.

"They used me."

Lucas swallows.

"Yeah."

Jason stares at the lab.

"…What do we do?"

Steve answers, steady:

"We stop him."

Jason looks at him.

For the first time—

No hero complex.

Just broken.

"Then I'm in."

Hours later.

Wheeler basement again.

But it feels different.

Heavier.

Jonathan stands by the stairs.

Robin pacing.

Dustin frantically trying to piece together what he saw.

Eddie quiet.

Lucas tense.

Max sitting close to him.

Lena wrapped in a blanket on the couch.

Steve hovering near her without even realizing it.

Mike and Will sit slightly apart.

But not far.

Nancy stands in the center.

"They took Hopper."

Silence.

Will whispers:

"He let himself get taken."

Nancy nods slowly.

"He knew."

Dustin's voice shakes.

"So what, we just wait?"

Eddie snaps:

"No."

Jason speaks from the back of the room.

"I know the layout."

Everyone turns.

Max stiffens.

Jason meets her gaze, ashamed.

"I was inside longer than you."

Nancy narrows her eyes.

"You're serious?"

Jason nods.

"He has another wing."

The room goes cold.

Later.

Everyone's arguing upstairs.

The basement is quiet.

Will sits on the floor, back against the couch.

Mike sits across from him.

The weight between them is enormous.

Will finally whispers:

"You could've died."

Mike shrugs weakly.

"So could you."

Will's voice cracks.

"That's not the point."

Mike leans forward.

"Then what is?"

Will's eyes are shining.

"The point is that when you kissed me…"

Mike freezes.

"…I didn't feel scared anymore."

Silence.

Mike's breath shakes.

"I've been scared my whole life," Will continues. "Of people finding out. Of being wrong. Of losing you."

Mike whispers:

"You're not losing me."

Will swallows.

"You can't promise that."

Mike crawls closer.

"I can promise this."

He reaches out.

Takes Will's hand fully this time.

Not hiding it.

Not pulling away.

"I'm not pretending anymore."

Will's breath stutters.

"You're sure?"

Mike nods slowly.

"I don't know what I am. But I know I'm yours."

Will's eyes fill.

"…Mike."

They lean into each other.

Foreheads touching.

No rush.

No panic.

Just breath.

Just real.

Upstairs, chaos.

Down here—

Clarity.

Upstairs, Steve walks Lena toward the door.

"You should go home," he says gently.

Lena hesitates.

"I don't want to."

Steve softens.

"I know."

Her voice is small.

"When you fight him… when you fight like that…"

She swallows.

"I don't want you to get hurt."

Steve smiles faintly.

"That's kind of my thing."

Lena almost laughs—

Then—

A car engine revs outside.

Too loud.

Too close.

Steve's head snaps toward the window.

Headlights flood the driveway.

Not police.

A black sedan.

Steve's stomach drops.

"Get down."

The car door opens.

A silhouette steps out.

Not Brenner.

Not Jason.

Someone new.

Watching the house.

Lena's breath trembles.

"…They followed us."

Steve's voice is steel now.

"Stay behind me."

Inside the lab, Hopper's chair scrapes across the floor.

He strains against the restraints.

Brenner stands near the door.

"You care deeply for those children."

Hopper glares.

"They're not yours."

Brenner's smile fades.

"No."

He turns.

"But they will be."

The door opens.

A figure steps inside.

Face still hidden in shadow.

The hidden partner.

Brenner speaks calmly:

"It's time."

Hopper's blood runs cold.

And outside—

The black sedan's engine cuts off.
