Chapter 28 - Strings Attached

The car ride home was heavy with silence.

Rain streaked across the windows, tracing lines that looked too much like cracks.

Joon-hyuk's hands stayed locked on the steering wheel, knuckles pale. "You shouldn't have gone out there with him," he said finally, voice low.

Hye-rin turned her head, watching the city blur by. "You were watching?"

His jaw tightened. "You're my fiancée. People notice."

"Funny," she said, bitterness threading her voice. "You only seem to care when it's convenient."

He didn't reply. The hum of the tires filled the space between them. Every word unsaid pressed against her chest like a weight.

When the car stopped in front of her building, she reached for the handle without looking back. "Goodnight, Mr. Lee."

"Hye-rin," he said quietly.

She hesitated.

"Be careful around Choi Min-jae," he continued, eyes shadowed. "He's not what he seems."

She let out a humorless laugh. "Neither are you."

The door shut softly behind her, but the echo lingered.

In the car, Joon-hyuk sat still, watching the rain blur her silhouette until it disappeared completely.
