Chapter 82 - clock's ticking

Stephanie's POV

The car flew down the highway, tires humming against the road. James sat beside me in the back seat, quiet as always. Thirty-six years old, but the worry lines around his eyes made him look closer to fifty. He's the best lawyer I've ever met, and that's exactly why I hired him. No small talk, no wasted words—just results.

We didn't speak for a long time. The silence felt heavy, but I needed it. My mind was too loud.

Finally I turned to him. "James… how do you really feel about this?"

He didn't look away from the window at first. Then he met my eyes, steady and sure. "We're going to win, Steph. I promise you that. I'll fight with everything I've got to get Josh back in your arms. And Jolina stays with you too. That's not even a question. I've handled cases like this before, it's easy."

His words settled something shaky inside my chest. I nodded, slow. "Good. Because I'm not leaving this place without my son."
