Cane's POV
I sat there staring at her and my head wouldn't stop asking the same question over and over.
Why is she like this now?
Until a few days ago , she was cool with me? We had that dinner, we made love. She laughed at the movie we watched and made me feel like she was okay.
That girl is gone. The woman sitting across from me looks like she could burn the whole building down and walk away smiling. Cold eyes, sharp mouth, skin everywhere. I made her this way. Or the world did. Or both of us did. I don't even know anymore.
Then I heard it, low and sweet and dangerous.
"Clock's ticking, baby."
Everything inside me went still.
I laughed, but it came out rough, like gravel. "Look at you. That dress. You really think showing up half-naked makes you the mother of the year?"
Her eyes flashed fire. "I wear what I want. You lost the right to tell me how to dress the day you chose Tabitha over me."
