Chapter 1057 - The Alliance Letter

The morning tranquility that prevailed in the grand mansion in the capital of the Kingdom of Vailor was gently interrupted by the first rays of sunlight crossing the silk curtains of the main chambers, illuminating the environment where I rested after the conclusion of the previous arc. As the comforting warmth of the newly begun day spread through the space, a discreet and polite knock at the door preceded the entrance of Liriel's assistant, who carried in her hands a silver tray containing official correspondence and recent reports sent directly by the royal palace. Rising from the bed with my usual serenity and dressing in light linen robes, I approached to collect the documents, imagining that they were merely routine bureaucratic updates concerning fiefs or trade routes. However, upon breaking the red wax seal bearing the unified crest of the human crown and the emissaries of the depths, I immediately realized that the missive contained an urgent summons that would require our immediate attention before we could think about returning to our climbs in the tower.

Reflecting on the unpredictable nature of the life of an elite adventurer and noble protector, I understood that the calm after a conquest rarely lasted long enough to allow for prolonged rest. The outside world continued to turn, filled with conflicts, vulnerabilities, and cries for help that echoed through places often forgotten by surface civilization. The letter detailed the distressing situation of the Kingdom of the Gnomes, an ancient, peaceful, and isolated civilization that inhabited a complex network of underground tunnels located exactly along the dividing region between human domains and elven forests. According to the account sent by the sovereign of that people, violent incursions by corrupted demons had erupted in the eastern wing after a structural collapse in the rocks, threatening to destroy homes and decimate an entire community that had traditionally remained neutral regarding the wars of the continent. The reward stipulated for the mission of extermination and stabilization of the underground border reached the impressive sum of twenty thousand gold coins.

"A careful reading of this document reveals a situation of extreme vulnerability in the eastern wing of the gnomes' underground territory," Liriel announced in her calm and analytical voice, quickly adjusting her glasses while examining the geological maps and excerpts from the letter that I had placed on the mahogany desk in the office. "Historical records indicate that the gnomes possess fascinating runic engineering technology, but they are not warriors suited for a war of extermination against high-ranking demons. If we allow the breach in the fissure to remain open, the flow of monsters could destabilize the entire boundary between humans and elves."

"A peaceful people cornered by demons in underground tunnels sounds like a perfectly just cause for us to demand our immediate intervention," Scarlet interjected with a fearless and radiant smile on her lips, crossing her arms elegantly while leaning against the office bookshelf. The swordswoman's crimson eyes shone with contagious enthusiasm. "I admit that the idea of exploring rocky galleries and slicing up some invading monsters seems much more interesting than sitting around reviewing trade contracts in the capital, not to mention that the reward of twenty thousand gold coins will leave our treasury overflowing!"

"Scarlet's enthusiasm for financial rewards is always noticeable, but the main focus of this mission must be the preservation of those people's lives and the security of the alliance's borders," Elara pondered, delicately adjusting the folds of her alchemical garment as she entered the office accompanied by Lyannis and Vespera. The alchemist maintained a welcoming and professional tone as she continued: "We will have to prepare atmospheric adaptation tonic bottles and purification essences on a large scale, because the air in the deep galleries tends to be thin and filled with miasma."

"I am immensely grateful for all the logistical support and the impeccable readiness with which you face every new summons, Elara and Liriel," I replied in a firm and deeply affectionate tone, sharing a warm glance with all the companions who were already gathering in the room. I looked at the united group and continued with determination: "I briefly considered the desire to return to the tower soon so that we could continue our climbs, but helping an innocent people crying out for help is a non-negotiable priority. If you agree, we will accept this mission and depart for the underground."

"My instincts tell me that this underground expedition will be filled with architectural surprises and intriguing tactical challenges," Rai'kanna commented, her beastly ears swaying excitedly while her tail expressed evident satisfaction. The wolf warrior stretched slightly and added with a playful smile: "Besides, I have never refused a good hunt for invading demons, regardless of whether we are on the surface or beneath kilometers of solid rock."

"The underground hunt will be perfectly controlled as long as we keep the defensive formation rigorously aligned in the narrow tunnels," Vespera pointed out, adjusting the magical necklace that radiated an aura of serenity around her neck. The mage continued with her usual elegance: "I will prepare focused starlight enchantments so that we can ensure perfect visibility in the galleries where natural light has never reached."

"And I will be responsible for organizing all the support equipment and healing potions in the travel cases, ensuring that no detail is left behind before our departure," Lyannis added with a determined smile, adjusting the strap of her field bag. "No gear or vial will be missing from our squad."

The harmony, companionship, and mutual trust that filled the office transformed that unexpected summons into yet another opportunity to reaffirm the unbreakable unity of our family. No shadow of hesitation hung over the group; only the serene conviction that we were ready to accept the gnomes' mission prevailed. Thoughts about the nobility of protecting the weak and the grandeur of our journey crossed my mind, renewing my strength and confirming that every step we took outside the tower strengthened our legacy of justice and love even further.
