Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: My Apologies, Sir, I Didn't Recognize You

Du Mu walked out of Nick Fury's office.

After much convincing and pleading, Nick Fury finally believed that Du Mu had no intention of leaving S.H.I.E.L.D.

Du Mu also seized the opportunity to make a demand: from now on, unless it was a highly difficult mission, he didn't want any of those low-value assignments. He was above them now!

And just like that, he was granted a one-day vacation.

The reason was that S.H.I.E.L.D. currently had no difficult missions ready; all the high-level tasks had been snapped up by other agents.

Nick Fury simply gave Du Mu a day off, telling him to rest well lest his 'sales champion' work himself to death.

"I can't play this game anymore. Even the NPCs are competing fiercely!"

Du Mu grumbled as he wandered the corridor.

Come to think of it, he had never properly explored the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. Every time he came, he went straight to Nick Fury's office, and he hadn't even fully unlocked the S.H.I.E.L.D. map.

He figured this was a good opportunity to unlock the map and see if there were any hidden Easter eggs.

After all, certain game developers loved to hide treasure chests in every corner of the map, intentionally making players search for them. That had always annoyed Du Mu.

No time like the present!

Du Mu opened his mini-map and moved towards the unexplored, dark areas of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters was indeed massive. Du Mu spent over an hour walking around and still hadn't fully unlocked the map.

Soon, he arrived at an office door. The map showed that the area inside was an unexplored, dark region.

Not many people had a private office at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. They were usually people of considerable importance, with clearance levels starting at Level 8 Agent—far beyond the easy reach of a Level 5 Agent like Du Mu.

But Du Mu clearly had no reservations and simply pushed the door open.

Stepping into the office, Du Mu saw a fair-haired old man in a suit sitting behind the desk. Opposite him stood a bald man wearing glasses, who seemed to be giving a report.

Du Mu's sudden intrusion visibly startled the two men.

The bald man with glasses quickly reacted, looking at Du Mu with alert eyes. "Who are you? How did you get in? Why didn't the office security system trigger an alarm?"

So many questions!

Du Mu suspected he might have triggered a certain plot point, and answered, "I'm Du Mu. You don't need to know how I got in. As for why the alarm didn't trigger, it's simple: I hacked the system."

The bald man with glasses: "?"

How could you say that with such righteous indignation?

"You—"

"That's enough, Agent Sitwell. You may step out. I need to have a word with Agent Du Mu here."

The fair-haired old man suddenly spoke, interrupting Sitwell.

"Mr. Pierce, but he—"

"It's fine. Leave it to me."

"...Understood."

Sitwell gave Du Mu a deep look before leaving the office.

"Please, have a seat."

Pierce offered Du Mu a very friendly smile.

Du Mu didn't stand on ceremony, plopping down across from Pierce, idly fiddling with a wallet in his hand.

"This is...?"

Pierce looked confused.

"Oh, this? My wallet," Du Mu said, taking all the cash out of the wallet and stuffing it into his pocket, then casually tossing the wallet into the trash bin by his feet.

Pierce had good eyesight and clearly saw a driver's license slip out of the wallet. The person in the photo was none other than Sitwell, who had just left.

Pierce: "..."

A master thief!

And he was petty, too. Sitwell had only glared at him, and his wallet was stolen.

Pierce made a preliminary assessment of Du Mu in his mind and got straight to the point: "I know who you are, Agent Du Mu."

"Oh? You've heard my story too?" Du Mu was intrigued.

"Of course. Your abilities are quite outstanding. To advance from a graduate to a Level 5 Agent in just two months—that's a first in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s history," Pierce praised.

"You're too kind, too kind." Du Mu's impression of Pierce greatly improved. NPCs with such good taste were rare.

"However, I know more than just that."

Pierce revealed a meaningful smile.

Du Mu hated these "riddlers" the most, but since the man had just complimented him, he played along and asked, "Then what else do you know?"

"Why, of course..."

Pierce leaned forward slightly, closed in on Du Mu's ear, and whispered, "Hail Hydra!"

Du Mu's eyes suddenly widened, staring at Pierce in disbelief.

"You, you—"

Pierce nodded approvingly. It seemed Du Mu had fully grasped the situation. "That's right, I am—"

"What are you talking about?"

Du Mu finally finished his sentence.

Pierce: "..."

Could you please stop speaking in gasps!

Pierce's face darkened, and he chose to lay his cards on the table. "You still don't understand? I am Hydra!"

"And I am your superior!"

Hearing this, Du Mu suddenly realized what was going on. He immediately stood up and said seriously, "My apologies, Sir! I didn't recognize you!"

That's right!

The identity Du Mu had chosen was a Hydra double agent!

According to the system, he was a secret spy embedded within S.H.I.E.L.D.

His mission was simple: hide his identity and absolutely never let anyone discover it, especially that black-hearted 'Nick Fury.'

Apart from that, he could still accept S.H.I.E.L.D. missions as normal and collect the rewards.

"It's alright. It's normal for you not to know. For the organization's safety, all unactivated Hydra members don't know of each other's existence until their identities are confirmed."

At this, Pierce looked at Du Mu speechlessly. "If you hadn't barged in today, I wouldn't have actively activated you, this sleeper agent."

This time, Du Mu had purely stumbled into the office and coincidentally ran into his other boss.

"However, your sense of caution is commendable. Even if someone shouts 'Hail Hydra' at you, you shouldn't admit it on the spot. You did that very well."

"Uh, thank you for the compliment, Sir."

Du Mu scratched his head, feeling a little guilty.

Could he admit that he'd been a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent for so long he almost forgot about the Hydra thing?

No, this was the highest level of disguise! If he even forgot his own true identity, who else could possibly find out?

Du Mu immediately felt confident again with this line of reasoning.

Pierce's expression turned serious. "Since you've been activated, don't waste the opportunity. I happen to have a mission that requires manpower, and I think you are the perfect fit."

"What mission?"

Du Mu immediately brightened up.

If he couldn't thrive in S.H.I.E.L.D., then why couldn't he thrive in Hydra?

"It's a long-term assignment. I need you to keep a close watch on Nick Fury. Any special missions he assigns you, or any unusual movements you notice from him, must be reported to me immediately."

[NPC Alexander Pierce has issued you a new mission]

[Mission: Hail Hydra]

[Objective: Timely report any mission movements from Nick Fury to Pierce]

[Reward: To be determined based on mission completion and intelligence value]

"I guarantee I'll complete the mission, Sir!"

Du Mu stood at attention and responded.
