Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Ashes and Answers

Naruto: The Dragonoid's Legac

Three Days Later - Hokage Funeral

The entire village had turned out for the funeral. Thousands of people lined the streets in black, their heads bowed in respect as the Third Hokage's casket was carried through Konoha. The somber procession moved slowly toward the memorial grounds, accompanied by the mournful sound of drums.

Naruto stood among the honor guard of Genin and Chunin, wearing formal black attire that felt stiff and uncomfortable. His blue eyes—he'd finally managed to keep them fully suppressed—were red-rimmed from three days of sporadic crying. Beside him stood Sakura, also in black, her hand occasionally reaching out to squeeze his arm in silent support.

Sasuke stood on his other side, his expression blank but his fists clenched tight. The Uchiha understood loss all too well.

The past three days had been a blur. Rebuilding efforts, treating the wounded, counting the dead. And for Naruto, endless questions from various officials about his "condition."

Jiraiya had managed to hold off the formal inquiry, citing Naruto's grief and the village's need to mourn. But everyone knew it was temporary. The questions would come.

"We are gathered here to honor Hiruzen Sarutobi," Koharu's voice rang out across the memorial ground. "The Third Hokage, who served Konoha for decades. Who fought in three great wars. Who gave his life to protect this village one final time."

Naruto's hands trembled. The dragonoid power inside him stirred with his emotions, but he kept it locked down tight. He couldn't lose control. Not here. Not in front of the entire village.

*Easy, kit,* the Kyuubi rumbled. *Breathe. Remember what the pervert taught you.*

Over the past three days, Jiraiya had worked with him on meditation techniques to control the dragonoid energy when emotions ran high. It was helping, but barely.

"The Third Hokage believed in the Will of Fire," Homura continued the eulogy. "The belief that the older generation protects the younger, that we are all leaves on the great tree of Konoha, and that new leaves will grow to protect the village when the old ones fall."

Naruto felt tears streaming down his face but made no move to wipe them away.

"He believed in the next generation," Koharu's eyes found Naruto in the crowd. "In their potential. In their strength. In their ability to surpass their predecessors and build a better future."

The casket was lowered into the ground. One by one, shinobi stepped forward to place flowers and pay their respects. When it was Naruto's turn, his legs felt like lead.

He approached the grave slowly, holding a single white lily—the Hokage's favorite flower. His hand shook as he placed it on the casket.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, so quietly only those with enhanced hearing could catch it. "I'm sorry I wasn't strong enough. But I promise... I'll protect this village. I'll make you proud. I'll become Hokage, just like I said."

Pink-and-gold energy flickered briefly around the flower before Naruto suppressed it. Several sharp-eyed Jonin noticed, exchanging concerned glances.

As Naruto returned to his position, he felt multiple eyes on him. The village knew something had changed about him. Rumors were spreading—the Genin who'd transformed during the invasion, who'd fought a Tailed Beast, who had wings and horns and power that defied explanation.

Some looked at him with awe. Others with fear. Many with suspicion.

*Just like always,* Naruto thought bitterly. *I'm still the village monster to them.*

*No,* Sakura's voice was soft beside him. "You're a hero, Naruto. You saved lives during the invasion. Don't let their fear make you forget that."

He looked at her in surprise. "You heard me?"

"You were thinking pretty loud," she gave him a sad smile. "And I know you well enough to know what's going through your head."

On his other side, Sasuke spoke quietly. "After this, they're going to want answers. The council has been pushing for an inquiry."

"I know."

"What are you going to tell them?"

"The truth." Naruto's eyes hardened with determination. "I'm done hiding. If they can't accept what I am, that's their problem."

"Bold words," Neji said from behind them, his tone neutral. "But be careful. The truth can be a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands."

Naruto glanced back to see several of the Genin who'd witnessed his transformation—Neji, Shikamaru, Kiba, Lee, Shino, Choji, and even Hinata, who'd heard everything from the others.

"You guys came," Naruto said, surprised to see them clustered together.

"Of course we did," Kiba muttered. "The Hokage was important to all of us. And..." he hesitated, then added quietly, "we wanted you to know you're not alone."

"Indeed!" Lee gave a watery thumbs-up. "We stand with you, Naruto-kun! Your youthful spirit inspires us all!"

"Thank you," Naruto's voice was thick with emotion. "Really. Thank you."

As the funeral concluded and people began to disperse, Jiraiya appeared at Naruto's elbow.

"Kid, we need to talk. The council wants you in chambers in one hour."

"Already?"

"I managed to hold them off during the mourning period, but now..." Jiraiya's expression was grim. "Danzo's been pushing hard. He wants answers about your powers, and he wants them now."

"Let him push," Naruto said, his jaw set. "I'm ready."

"Are you though?" Jiraiya's hand gripped his shoulder. "Because Danzo isn't just going to ask polite questions. He's going to probe, pressure, and try to find any excuse to paint you as a threat. You need to stay calm, stay in control, and for the love of the Sage, don't let your dragonoid side show."

"I can handle it."

"I hope so, kid. Because a lot depends on how this goes."

**Council Chambers - One Hour Later**

The chamber was more crowded than Naruto had expected. Not just the civilian council and clan heads, but numerous Jonin observers stood along the walls. Kakashi was there, along with Might Guy, Kurenai, Asuma, and others.

Naruto stood in the center of the room, feeling like a specimen under a microscope. His hands were clasped behind his back to hide their trembling—not from fear, but from the effort of keeping his power suppressed in such a tense environment.

"Naruto Uzumaki," Koharu began formally. "You've been called before this council to answer questions regarding the events of the invasion and specifically the... abilities you displayed."

"I understand," Naruto said, keeping his voice level.

Danzo stepped forward from the shadows. "Let's not waste time with pleasantries. Uzumaki, what exactly are you?"

"Danzo!" Hiashi Hyuga's voice cut in sharply. "The boy is still grieving. Show some respect."

"Respect?" Danzo's visible eye fixed on the Hyuga clan head. "The village's security takes precedence over sentiment. This boy transformed into something inhuman during the invasion. We have a right to know what we're dealing with."

"I'm still human," Naruto said firmly. "I'm just... more now."

"Explain," Homura commanded.

Naruto took a deep breath. Jiraiya had coached him on what to say—stick to the basic facts, don't elaborate unless pressed, and above all, maintain that he was in control.

"During my training with Jiraiya-sama, I encountered an entity from another dimension. She called herself Milim Nava, a Demon Lord. She claimed I was her distant descendant and granted me her power—transformed me into what she called a dragonoid."

The room erupted in murmurs.

"A Demon Lord?" one of the civilian council members gasped. "You made a deal with a demon?"

"I didn't make a deal," Naruto clarified. "She just... gave it to me. Said I had the right spirit or something. I didn't really have a choice in the matter."

"Convenient," Danzo said coldly. "And this 'dragonoid' transformation—what does it entail?"

"Enhanced physical abilities. Energy manipulation. Flight." Naruto decided to be straightforward. "And apparently some personality bleed-through from Milim, though I'm learning to control that."

"Show us," Danzo demanded.

"What?"

"Show us this transformation. Prove that you have control over it."

"Danzo, that's unnecessary—" Shikaku Nara started.

"It's perfectly necessary!" Danzo cut him off. "If the boy claims to have control, let him demonstrate it. Unless he's afraid?"

Naruto felt his temper flare. The dragonoid energy responded, eager to be released, to show this old war hawk exactly what he was dealing with.

*Don't,* the Kyuubi warned. *He's baiting you. If you lose control, he wins.*

*I won't lose control,* Naruto thought back.

"Fine," he said aloud. "But clear some space. I don't want to accidentally break anything."

The council members backed away, creating a circle around him. Naruto closed his eyes and reached for the dragonoid power that was always humming beneath his skin.

*Careful,* he told himself. *Just enough to show them. Don't go overboard.*

He let it flow.

His eyes shifted first—blue bleeding into gold with pink slitted pupils. Gasps echoed through the chamber. Then the horns emerged from his temples, small and translucent but unmistakably inhuman. Pink-and-gold energy began crackling around his body like lightning.

Finally, with a deep breath, he manifested his wings.

They erupted from his back in a flash of light—magnificent dragon wings spanning fifteen feet, translucent pink with gold accents, pulsing with raw power. The energy radiating from them made the air itself shimmer.

"My God," Kurenai whispered.

"Incredible," Might Guy breathed. "I've never seen anything like it!"

Danzo's expression remained cold, but Naruto could see the calculating gleam in his eye. "And this power—how does it compare to the Nine-Tails?"

"That's classified," Jiraiya interjected sharply. "The details of Naruto's capabilities are a village secret."

"Everything about him should be a village secret," Danzo said. "Such power cannot be allowed to roam freely. I propose we place Naruto Uzumaki under ANBU supervision. For his safety and the village's."

"ANBU supervision?" Tsume Inuzuka snarled. "You mean imprisonment! The boy saved lives during the invasion!"

"And he could just as easily take them if he lost control," Danzo countered. "We cannot take that risk."

"Enough!" Hiashi's voice carried authority. "Naruto, retract your transformation and answer me honestly—can you control this power?"

Naruto met the Hyuga clan head's stern gaze. Slowly, he pulled the dragonoid energy back in. The wings faded. The horns receded. The eyes shifted back to blue.

"Yes," he said firmly. "I can control it. Even when I'm emotional, even when I'm angry—I can control it."

"Then that's good enough for me," Hiashi said. "The Hyuga clan votes against restrictions."

"The Nara clan as well," Shikaku added. "My son trusts him. That's sufficient."

"Akimichi clan supports him," Choza rumbled.

"Yamanaka agrees," Inoichi nodded.

"The Inuzuka stand with him," Tsume grinned. "Takes guts to face down a Tailed Beast. I respect that."

"Aburame clan sees no reason for concern," Shibi said quietly. "My son reports that Naruto showed remarkable restraint."

Danzo's jaw clenched. "You're all being fools. This power is beyond anything we understand—"

"Actually," a new voice interrupted from the doorway. "I might understand it better than you think."

Everyone turned to see a tall, busty blonde woman in her fifties stride into the chamber, wearing a green haori with the kanji for "gamble" on the back. Behind her walked a younger woman with black hair holding a pig.

"Tsunade-sama!" Koharu stood in shock. "You came!"

"Jiraiya's message was pretty convincing," Tsunade said, her amber eyes finding Naruto. "He said there was a kid here who'd undergone some kind of dimensional transformation. I had to see it for myself."

Naruto stared at the legendary Sannin. Even without his enhanced senses, he could feel the massive chakra she possessed—easily Kage-level.

"You're one of the Legendary Sannin," he said. "The slug princess."

"It's Slug SAGE, brat," Tsunade's eye twitched. "And watch who you're calling princess." She walked closer, studying him intently. "So you're the kid. The Nine-Tails Jinchuuriki who became a dragonoid."

"That's me." Naruto straightened his spine. "Naruto Uzumaki, future Hokage!"

Tsunade laughed—a sharp, bitter sound. "Hokage? Kid, do you have any idea what you're asking for? The Hokage dies for this village. Every single one of them."

"I know," Naruto said quietly, thinking of the old man's funeral. "But that's what it means to protect what you love."

Something flickered in Tsunade's eyes—surprise, maybe respect. "Huh. You almost sound like you mean it."

"I do mean it!"

"We'll see." Tsunade turned to the council. "I'm guessing you called me here for more than just sightseeing?"

"The village needs a Fifth Hokage," Homura said. "We would like you to accept the position."

"Not interested."

"Tsunade-sama—" Koharu started.

"I said no." Tsunade's voice was firm. "I gave up on this village a long time ago. Only reason I'm here is because Jiraiya said there was something scientifically interesting about the kid's transformation." She looked at Naruto. "So, brat, you willing to let me run some tests? Figure out what makes you tick?"

"Will it help me control my power better?" Naruto asked.

"Probably."

"Then sure." Naruto shrugged. "Not like I have anything to hide anymore."

"Good." Tsunade smirked. "We'll start tomorrow. For now, I need a drink." She turned to leave, then paused. "Oh, and Danzo? If you try to imprison this kid, I'll make sure you regret it. Dimensional transformations are insanely rare. He's a valuable resource, not a prisoner."

With that, she swept out of the chamber, Shizune hurrying after her.

Danzo's expression was thunderous, but he was outnumbered. The clan heads had voted against him, and now Tsunade—potential Hokage—had declared Naruto off-limits.

"This council is adjourned," Koharu announced. "Naruto Uzumaki, you are free to go. However, you are required to report any loss of control immediately and to work with Tsunade-sama on understanding your abilities."

"I understand," Naruto said.

As the council dispersed, Kakashi approached him. "That went better than expected."

"Did it?" Naruto felt exhausted. "They still look at me like I'm a freak."

"Some do," Kakashi admitted. "But others see a brave kid who's dealing with impossible circumstances. Give them time."

Jiraiya clapped Naruto on the shoulder. "You did good, kid. Kept your cool, showed control, and didn't let Danzo bait you. The old man would be proud."

"You really think so?"

"I know so." Jiraiya's smile was genuine. "Now come on. Let's get out of here before Danzo tries to corner you for 'additional questions.'"

As they left the chamber, Naruto caught Sasuke watching from across the hall. His teammate's expression was unreadable, but his Sharingan was active, analyzing.

*He's jealous,* Naruto realized. *He sees my power and wants to match it.*

It was a concerning thought, but before he could dwell on it, a small voice called out.

"N-Naruto-kun!"

Hinata stood nearby, her face bright red, her fingers pressed together nervously. "I... I wanted to say... you were very brave in there. Standing up to them like that."

"Thanks, Hinata," Naruto smiled genuinely for the first time in days. "That means a lot."

"And I... I wanted you to know..." She took a deep breath, gathering courage. "I don't care what you are. Dragonoid, Jinchuuriki, or just Naruto. You're still the person who inspires me to be stronger. So... so thank you."

Before Naruto could respond, she ran off, her face now completely red.

"What was that about?" Naruto asked, confused.

Jiraiya and Kakashi exchanged knowing looks.

"Nothing, kid," Jiraiya chuckled. "Nothing at all. Come on, let's get some ramen. You've earned it."

As they walked through the village streets, Naruto noticed people pointing and whispering. Some looked afraid. Others curious. A few even nodded respectfully.

*It's going to be like this from now on,* he thought. *Everyone knowing what I am. No more hiding.*

*Is that so bad?* the Kyuubi asked. *At least now they see your strength.*

*I guess. I just wish they could see me as Naruto first, monster second.*

*Give them time. You changed the minds of those Genin who saw you fight. You can change the village's mind too.*

At Ichiraku Ramen, Teuchi and Ayame greeted him warmly, no different than before. It was a small comfort.

"The usual, Naruto?" Teuchi asked with a smile.

"Yeah. Make it three bowls!" Naruto's grin was back. "I'm starving!"

As he ate, surrounded by Jiraiya and Kakashi, with the village slowly rebuilding around him, Naruto made a silent vow.

He would master this dragonoid power. He would prove to everyone that he was more than just a vessel for the Nine-Tails or a freak transformation. He would become Hokage.

And he would protect everyone precious to him—no matter what it cost.

Pink-and-gold energy flickered briefly around his chopsticks before fading.

He still had a long way to go.

But for the first time since the Hokage's death, Naruto felt hope.

**Meanwhile - Root Headquarters**

Danzo sat in his underground office, fingers steepled, deep in thought.

"The council was a setback," he said to the ANBU operative kneeling before him. "But not a defeat. Continue monitoring the Uzumaki boy. I want reports on his every movement, every training session with Tsunade, every fluctuation in his power."

"Yes, Danzo-sama."

"And prepare the contingency plans. If the boy proves to be a threat—or if he proves too valuable to leave in the hands of bleeding hearts—we'll need to act swiftly."

"What about the Uchiha boy? You mentioned interest in him as well."

Danzo's expression grew calculating. "Sasuke Uchiha is a different project. But perhaps... perhaps we can use one against the other. Rivalry can be a powerful motivator."

The ANBU operative said nothing, waiting for orders.

"For now, we watch and wait. Both boys have immense potential. The question is—which one will serve Konoha's interests better? The dragonoid Jinchuuriki, or the Sharingan prodigy seeking power?"

Danzo stood, walking to a window that showed his hidden base beneath Konoha.

"Only time will tell. But I'll be ready to act when the moment comes. For the good of the village, sacrifices must always be made."

**Naruto's Apartment - That Night**

Naruto lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Tomorrow he'd begin working with Tsunade to understand his powers better. The day after, training would resume. Life would continue.

But tonight, he allowed himself to grieve.

"I miss you, old man," he whispered to the darkness. "I wish you could see what I'm becoming. I wish you could guide me."

A gentle breeze came through his window, carrying the scent of flowers from the memorial ground.

For just a moment, Naruto could have sworn he heard the Hokage's voice on that breeze.

*I'm always watching over you, Naruto. Make me proud.*

Tears streamed down his face, but he smiled.

"I will. I promise."

Pink-and-gold energy pulsed gently around his heart—no longer wild or uncontrolled, but steady and warm.

The dragonoid power had become part of him.

And he would use it to protect everyone he loved.

No matter what challenges lay ahead.
