"Hi!" Someone suddenly greeted her as she entered the apartment.
One hand froze on the door handle, while the other gripped her chest as she felt her heart skip a beat. Immediately, her feet faltered, forcing her to halt in her tracks.
As usual, she was expecting the house to be empty. But not tonight, it seemed.
Instantly, her instincts debated between fight or flight. But before she could choose, to her surprise, she found herself facing a familiar face in the dimly lit room.
Although it took her eyes several seconds before they could adjust to the minimal lighting coming from the lampshade on the far side of the room. Eventually, she recognized the man who was standing in the shadows.
"I'm sorry if I scared you. I didn't mean to." Quickly, he apologized, noticing the fear that registered in her eyes. "Emily, it's just me."
