Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: A Throne Of Ashes

*Chapter 20: A Throne of Ashes*

The moon hung low above the city, casting a silvery glow over the skyline Elena once ruled without question. But tonight, everything felt heavier—like the calm before a storm that would either wash away everything or leave behind only ruins.

She stood alone on the rooftop of the high-rise that housed her private headquarters, staring down at the blinking city lights. Behind her, Marco emerged from the shadows with a grim look on his face.

"It's done," he said.

"Eliminate them all?" Elena asked without turning.

"Yes. All five. The last one begged. Even named names." Marco hesitated. "Do you want the list?"

Elena exhaled. "Burn it."

"But—"

"If they sold me out once, they'll do it again. I'll clean house myself."

***

Down in the city's underbelly, another meeting brewed. Lorenzo, barely recovered from the last encounter, now sat with unfamiliar allies—international arms dealers, rogue politicians, and old enemies of Elena's family. With Sofia gone, he needed a new angle, and he found it: vengeance.

"She's stretched too thin," said one of the men. "Too many enemies, too few allies."

"She's scared," Lorenzo sneered. "I saw it in her eyes the night of the gala. She's not the same Elena. She bleeds now."

***

Back at headquarters, Elena paced the war room floor. Around her, maps, digital intel, and shifting alliances glowed on screens. Marco, Isabelle, and two new captains stood silently, waiting.

"They think I'm losing control," Elena said coldly. "Let them think that. Let them gather. Let them believe I've softened."

She paused, eyes darkening.

"Then we burn them all."

"But how?" Isabelle asked. "They've gone underground. Even their communication is encrypted. We can't trace them easily anymore."

"I'm not asking to trace," Elena said, turning toward a locked case on the wall.

She unlocked it and revealed a red file—something none of them had seen in years. Stamped across the top: *"Project Shadow Queen."*

Marco's eyes widened. "That's off the books. Even your father—"

"My father feared the fallout," she interrupted. "But I'm not my father. And they've left me no choice."

***

Three days later, a string of mysterious explosions rocked the underworld. Entire supply chains collapsed. Ships sank before docking. Safehouses were raided by faceless assassins who left no survivors and no evidence—only a black chess queen symbol drawn on the wall in blood.

Whispers of *"The Shadow Queen has returned"* spread like wildfire.

Elena, standing at the heart of the chaos she had unleashed, watched everything unfold. Her enemies were running now—desperate, disoriented.

But not everyone.

In the depths of the chaos, Lorenzo had found an unexpected ally: an old mentor of Elena's, presumed dead. One who taught her everything—and now sought to take everything back.

***

As night fell again over the city, Marco approached Elena, holding a tablet.

"We've hit thirty-five locations. You've scared the underworld into silence."

"Not silence," Elena corrected. "They're regrouping. Preparing for a war."

He looked at her, truly seeing her this time—not just as a Queen, but as a woman forged in fire.

"And what about you, Elena?" he asked quietly. "Are you prepared for what's coming?"

She turned to him, her voice like ice and steel.

"I didn't climb my way out of blood and betrayal just to fall now."

She looked down at the city.

"If they want a war…"

She slipped on her gloves.

"Then I'll give them hell."
