Chapter 16 - BALANCING DREAMS

The early morning sun filtered softly through the curtains as Destiny stirred awake. Baby Hope cooed softly in her crib, and Ethan was already in the kitchen, brewing coffee and quietly preparing breakfast. The aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling eggs filled the house, and Destiny smiled, feeling a sense of peace she hadn't known in months.

"You're early," she murmured, stretching and rubbing her eyes.

Ethan turned, holding a steaming cup of coffee. "I thought you might need this before the chaos begins," he said with a teasing grin. "Plus, I promised to help today. You need rest too."

Destiny felt her heart swell. "You're amazing, you know that?"

"I know," he said lightly, ruffling her hair. "And you're lucky I'm generous too."

By the time Destiny settled at the kitchen table with her laptop, her ex-in-laws had already arrived to help with the household chores and offer their support. Her ex-mother-in-law, always a warm presence, placed a tray of breakfast beside her, smiling gently.

"Eat something, dear," she said. "You'll need the energy for your writing. Ethan can handle Hope for a little while."

Her ex-father-in-law nodded, lifting Hope from the crib with a practiced ease. "We'll take care of her. You focus on finishing your chapter."

Destiny felt a lump form in her throat. Their support was unwavering not only emotionally but physically, too. She had been through so much, and now she had a team surrounding her, helping her navigate the new rhythm of life.

"Thank you all of you," she whispered. "I don't know what I would do without your support."

Her ex-mother-in-law patted her hand. "We're family, Destiny. And besides, Hope needs a strong, creative mother like you. We're here to help you be that."

As Destiny typed, her fingers flying over the keyboard, Ethan paced the nursery while Destiny's ex-father-in-law took over bouncing Hope whenever she stirred. Occasionally, Ethan would glance over at her, whispering encouragements.

"You're doing amazing, Destiny," he murmured. "Your story is going to inspire so many people."

Destiny smiled, but a twinge of anxiety crept in. The editors had requested a last-minute revision for her latest contract story, and the deadline was tight. Hope napped for only short stretches, and even with Ethan's help, the weight of responsibility pressed on her.

Noticing her tension, Ethan knelt beside her, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face. "What's wrong?"

"They want major revisions by tomorrow morning," Destiny admitted, her voice tight. "I don't know how I'm going to do it with Hope needing attention and"

Ethan interrupted gently, placing a hand on hers. "Then I'll stay up with her. You focus. We'll figure it out together. We always do."

Destiny felt a lump in her throat. "Ethan, you don't have to"

"I want to," he said firmly. "This is your dream. I'm not letting you do it alone."

Her ex-mother-in-law, standing nearby, smiled knowingly. "We can help too, Destiny. I'll stay up with Hope for a few hours. Ethan can rest, and you can write in peace."

"And I'll bring you some warm tea," her ex-father-in-law added. "You'll need the energy."

That night, Destiny worked tirelessly on her revisions while Ethan and her ex-in-laws rotated responsibilities for Hope. The house was filled with quiet movement: soft footsteps, whispered lullabies, the gentle hum of rocking chairs. Ethan sang softly when Hope cried, his voice low and tender, while her ex-mother-in-law hummed along. Sometimes, her ex-father-in-law would join in, making gentle noises that soothed the baby instantly.

Destiny's eyes burned from exhaustion, but she felt a renewed sense of purpose. She could do this with Ethan, her ex-in-laws, and the warmth of a supportive household, she felt capable of balancing both her dreams and her new role as a mother.

By 3 a.m., Destiny finally leaned back, satisfied. The revisions were complete. Ethan looked over, smiling despite the tired lines on his face.

"You did it," he whispered. "I knew you could."

Destiny, exhausted but happy, looked at him. "I couldn't have done it without all of you."

Her ex-mother-in-law reached out, squeezing her hand. "And we'll always be here. Remember, Destiny, a second chance doesn't just happen with love it happens with support, patience, and family."

Over the next few weeks, this became their rhythm. Days were filled with writing, editing, feeding, and bouncing Hope to sleep. Nights were filled with lullabies, whispered encouragements, and small acts of love that stitched their lives together.

Sometimes, Ethan would insist Destiny stay over at their place for the night, just so he could take care of Hope while she rested. Other nights, Destiny stayed home, and her ex-in-laws would rotate through the nursery, allowing Ethan a brief rest while she continued her work.

Through it all, Destiny felt herself healing. The laughter of the house grew louder, Hope's cries became easier to soothe, and the small victories a chapter completed, a sleepless night survived became moments of joy.

Ethan's presence wasn't just helpful it became a source of comfort, laughter, and love. Even simple gestures, like brewing her favorite tea, holding Hope while Destiny showered, or encouraging her to take a nap, were daily reminders that love could be patient, steadfast, and gentle.

And as Destiny watched Ethan gently rock Hope to sleep one night, her ex-in-laws quietly watching from the doorway, she whispered softly to herself:

"This this is everything I've ever dreamed of. A second chance at love and a first chance at family."

Outside, the sun rose over Lagos, spilling golden light into their home a new day, a new beginning, and the start of the beautiful, chaotic, wonderful life they would share together.
