Chapter 5 - Chapter5- The Moment Everything Changed

Sophia woke up that morning, feeling uneasy. The sky was heavy with heavy clouds showing that it might rain soon. Sophia didn't know why she felt like something bad was going to happy today. She tried to shake off that feeling, she got dressed and made her way to work as usual.

The moment she stepped into Sterling Enterprise, she got this weird feeling. Her mind drifted to Kelvin and his strange behavior for the past week. She hardly even sees him or speaks to him. She felt this emptiness in her chest and she couldn't ignore it. By lunchtime Sophia decided to go and check up on him and they could probably talk about whatever the issue was and find a solution to it. So she ordered his favorite dessert and made her way to his office. She could hear voices from his office and she wondered who could probably be in his office during lunch break. She gently knocked but didn't get any response. She hesitated, then ousted the door open and what she saw shocked her, she froze.

Laura was sitting on Kelvin's desk, he was in between her legs and they were having an intense make out session. For a moment Sophia could not move, it was like her heart stopped, everything she was holding fell to the ground. Laura saw her first and tried to push Kelvin away.

"Soph, I'm so sorry, we didn't see you there. You know I told him to stop when we were at the office but he is always just so passionate". Laura smugly said, she was not remorseful at all.

Sophia paused and thought about what Laura had just said.

"Always? What do you mean by that?" She asked while looking at Kelvin but he did not say anything, he just avoided her eyes. She turned to Laura who just continued to smile. Then it all clicked, this wasn't their first time.

"Is this why you've been acting weird and avoiding me? You've been sleeping with my best friend and here I was thinking you are different". Sophia said with tears in her eyes.

"Sophia, wait!" Kelvin said but Sophia had already run out of the office. He wanted to go after her but Laura held him back

"She's just upset, give her space".

Sophia ran past her desk, past the stares of everyone straight into the bathroom, she locked herself in one of the stalls and started crying. It felt like her whole world just came crumbling down. She didn't return to her desk throughout that. She only had the courage to leave the building when it was dark, she walked aimlessly through the streets of Manhattan until her feet hurt. When she got home, she sneaked into her room because she didn't want her sister or her grandmother to see her in her current state. Sophia called in sick the next day and the next. A whole week passed before she dragged herself to return to work.

When she got to the office the next day she found out that her desk had been cleaned, it was empty. Confused, she went to see her supervisor.

"Mrs Anthony, I think there's been a mix up. My things are missing from my desk"

Mrs Anthony looked surprised. "Sophia? you're back?"

"Yes," sir said, frowning. "Why wouldn't I be"

She hesitated. "I assumed you weren't returning since HR received your resignation letter".

It was Sophia's turn to be surprised. "What resignation? I did not submit any resignation letter"

She frowned. "Your best friend, Laura, submitted it on your behalf saying your grandmother was sick and you wanted to spend time with her and take good care of her."

"That's not true. My grandmother is fine". Sophia said

Mrs Anthony shook her head. "Ok so sorry but HR already processed the paperwork."

"Does that mean I don't have a job anymore".

She asked.

"I'm sorry, Sophia". Mrs Anthony said.

Sophia nodded, thanked her and walked out. On her way out, she saw Laura coming down the hallway with confidence, her heels clicking confidently.

"Well, well," Laura said, smirking. "Didn't expect to see you here".

Sophia snapped. "How could you do this to me".

"How could I do what, Sophia?". She said with a cocky grin.

"Don't act all clueless with me, you know what you did" with anger. "First you stole my boyfriend then you forged my resignation".

"Boyfriend? Please, Sophia. Kelvin was never yours in the first place. He just got tired of playing your knight in shining armor".

The words hit Sophia so hard that she did not know when she raised her hand and landed a slap on Laura's face.

"What's going on here"

Sophia turned around and saw Kelvin standing there with a frown on his face. Laura immediately walked up to him with tears in her eyes. "Don't be angry at her, she didn't mean to hit me she's just angry." Laura said to Kelvin with her head down.

"You are still supporting her after she slapped you"

"She's my friend and I'm already used to her reacting like this when she doesn't get her way."

Sophia's blood was boiling, she reached out to drag Laura from Kelvin's body but Kelvin stopped her and pushed her away. Sophia was shocked,

"That's enough, Sophia. You know when Laura told me about how you mistreated her when you guys were younger and how you took her things, I never wanted to believe her but now I see what she means." Kelvin said

"Kelvin, she's lying. I can explain." Sophia said trying to hold Kelvin's hand but he moved back avoiding her touch.

"There's absolutely nothing for you to explain. We are done." He said. He took Laura's hand and they walked away. Laura turned back and gave Sophia a triumphant smirk.

Sophia stood in disbelief. She could not understand what just happened. When she came out of the building it was already raining but Sophia didn't mind, she kept walking and walking and when she eventually got home, she was drenched, shivering and completely numb. Her grandmother tried to comfort her but she barely said anything for the rest of the night.

It felt like everything had been taken from her- her job, her best friend, the man she loved. She could sleep that night, she stared at her ceiling, her mind spinning with lots of questions.

How could Laura betray her and when she did so?

How could Kelvin believe her lies?

But beneath her heartbreak was a spark of rage. She was not going to let them destroy her.
