Chapter 261: Gyarados vs. Charizard!!
"Char!!! —"
Charizard roared, stomping its thick leg onto the ground with a boom. It spread its wings and flapped them, instantly whipping up a strong gale.
[Charizard]
Gender: Female
Level: 86 (Elite)
Type: Fire / Flying
Ability: Blaze
Potential: A-
A Level 86 Charizard. This was one of Yun Erdun's main team members.
After witnessing Electivire's strength, Yun Erdun had finally decided to get serious.
"Return, Electivire."
Kenji recalled Electivire into its Poké Ball.
Although Electivire hadn't taken much damage against Hawlucha, maintaining Thunder Armor for so long had severely drained its stamina.
Even with the lifesteal from Hand of Justice, its remaining stamina was less than half.
Moreover, Charizard was Elite-level, while Electivire was merely at the Elite/Master threshold (Level 56). In a direct confrontation, it would only be crushed.
After recalling Electivire, Kenji threw another Poké Ball from his belt. "I choose you!!"
BOOM!!! —
The ball burst open, and a massive blue serpentine body crashed onto the battlefield.
"ROAAAARR!!!! —"
Gyarados let out a furious roar, its intimidating aura instantly sweeping across the arena.
[Gyarados]
Gender: Female
Level: 65 (Gym Leader)
...
Items: Bloodthirster, Edge of Night, Sterak's Gage
Although Gyarados's potential wasn't the highest on Kenji's team—lagging slightly behind Arbok and Electivire—its growth rate was second to none.
Back in the National League, Gyarados was Level 62. In just a short time, it had jumped to Level 65, gaining three levels.
Keep in mind that Electivire, at only Level 51 (now 56) and with "Limit" potential, had only gained 5 levels in the same period despite rigorous training.
This showed just how much extra effort Gyarados put in to bridge the gap in talent.
"Char..."
Charizard let out a low growl, eyeing the newcomer warily.
Although Gyarados was more than twenty levels lower than Charizard, in terms of sheer aura, Gyarados—boosted by its double intimidation factor (Intimidate + Pressure-like presence)—actually suppressed Charizard.
"Gyarados! Dragon Dance!!"
Before Charizard could strike, Kenji played his hand first, ordering Gyarados to buff up.
"Rock Slide!!"
Charizard roared, pointing its short arms at Gyarados. Rock-type energy coalesced in the air, forming massive boulders that crashed down toward the sea serpent below.
But the moment Charizard pointed, Gyarados's body became coated in a veil of water. Maintaining its Dragon Dance rhythm, it surged forward.
Dragon Waterfall!!!
Yun Erdun raised an eyebrow. This move reminded him of his old friend Gu Siyu's Kabutops, which had mastered a similar combo of Liquidation and Swords Dance.
Fusing a buff move with an attack move was rare because of the difficulty involved. It was much harder than simply combining two attacks.
The falling rocks crashed down, barely grazing Gyarados's tail.
If Charizard had used a STAB Fire or Flying move instead of the non-STAB Rock Slide, Gyarados—who hadn't completed its first Dragon Dance yet—might not have been able to dodge.
Controlling non-STAB energy was always slower and less precise than controlling one's own elemental affinity.
Perhaps the shock of the first round had rattled Yun Erdun, leading to this tactical error.
Clearly, Yun Erdun realized his mistake too late. He took a deep breath, adjusting his mindset. In high-level battles, a single command error could tilt the scales of victory.
Thanks to Yun Erdun's mistake, Gyarados completed its first Dragon Dance.
And it didn't stop there. Immediately after the first, it began a second Dragon Dance.
"Air Slash!!!"
Charizard roared, flapping its wings fiercely. Two blades of compressed air crossed into an X-shape and slashed toward Gyarados with terrifying force, threatening to tear the sky apart.
Facing the incoming Air Slash, Gyarados, still dancing, used Waterfall again to dodge.
But with only one Dragon Dance under its belt, its speed was still slightly lacking. The air blades clipped Gyarados's tail.
"ROAAAARR!!! —"
Gyarados roared in fury, its round eyes blazing with terrifying ferocity.
Scales on its tail shattered from the impact. Fortunately, the hit wasn't on a vital spot, so it didn't trigger Edge of Night.
The second Dragon Dance completed. Although enraged, Gyarados didn't lose its reason. It continued into a third Dragon Dance.
Yun Erdun frowned. He rarely encountered a tactic where the opponent just mindlessly stacked buffs right from the start.
"Hurricane!!! —"
Charizard flew high into the air, flapping its wings furiously. A violent storm wind blasted downward, filled with razor-sharp wind blades.
The Hurricane covered a massive area. Dodging with just Dragon Waterfall would be extremely difficult.
So, Gyarados didn't move. It simply tanked the Hurricane head-on, continuing its Dragon Dance within the storm.
Inside the howling tempest, Gyarados twisted its body.
Edge of Night triggered first! A brief invulnerability shield protected Gyarados.
The Hurricane continued to batter it.
As the invulnerability faded, Sterak's Gage triggered immediately after. A faint red barrier appeared around Gyarados's body, absorbing damage.
Compared to performing combo moves, focusing solely on Dragon Dance was faster.
By the time it completed the third Dragon Dance, the shield from Sterak's Gage hadn't even broken yet.
And then, Gyarados began a fourth Dragon Dance!!
Yun Erdun's eyes widened. What kind of strategy is this?! It's absolute lunacy!
