Elena's POV
"Yes… you can now witness your grandcat's birth," I said, smiling with relief.
She laughed and hugged me tightly. I hugged her back, feeling the weight of the moment, one I'd thought I might never have again since seven years ago after high school. Now, here it was… freely given. Of course, I wasn't letting it go to waste. I held her tighter, taking in her warmth, her scent, and the body Gift that God had so unfairly blessed her with.
"Hmm" Allen, my assistant, coughed deliberately.
The sound snapped Ayla back like she'd been hit by a current. She jolted away from me, eyes wide, and bolted for the door.
I blinked. "What in the world just happened? Did I miss a fire drill memo?"
"Wow… a lot has changed in seven years," I muttered as I watched her dart through the lobby crowd. "You even know how to run now."
I smiled faintly and stepped out of the elevator. Allen trailed close behind, his face unreadable… but full of curiosity.
