Chapter 18: In Broad Daylight
Mindy was completely open with Mo Fei about Professor, after all, Professor was the closest person to her in this World.
However, Mindy's Professor wasn't about directly cramming information into Mo Fei's head in a rote manner; instead, it was structured and planned.
She believed that Mo Fei should primarily focus on close-quarters combat for now, with firearms as a secondary skill. Other assassin skills like tracking, counter-surveillance, defense and early warning, self-healing, and situational awareness could be addressed later.
After all, Mo Fei didn't want to be an assassin; he just wanted to become powerful quickly in a short amount of time.
"Bang bang bang!"
Three gunshots suddenly rang out in the quiet wilderness.
[Shooting a handgun in broad daylight, gained 1 experience point.]
[Firearms Lv1: Your marksmanship is so terrible it's reached a new level. Your shots are more dangerous to allies than to enemies. I advise you never to touch a firearm again in this life; firearms are not for you. What you should be doing is nursing in your mother's arms! (Experience 47/100)]
Mo Fei exhaled a turbid breath, shaking his sore arm. Gaining experience in firearms felt even harder than for Xingyi Quan.
At this moment, both Mo Fei and Mindy stood inside an abandoned factory in the suburbs of New York.
This place was Mindy's safe house, surrounded by barbed wire, but that clearly didn't pose a challenge for Mindy.
As an assassin, not having a personal safe house would undoubtedly make one a soulless assassin.
Although Mindy wasn't a conventional assassin, she worried that if she and her brother ever got into trouble and had to leave their current home. So, she planned ahead, establishing several safe houses similar to this abandoned factory in New York City.
Generally speaking, establishing a safe house is quite expensive. For a wealthy person like Ethan Hunt in "Mission: Impossible," a safe house would cost several million U.S. dollars.
However, the rich have their ways, and the poor have theirs. Mindy's safe houses, built in the wilderness or abandoned factories, didn't cost much money. They only required creating a hidden location to store simple items like weapons, cash, identification, and easily storable food and Water.
Mo Fei remembered that Smith also had a safe house in the New York suburbs, a fully automated building—the kind where rats opened the doors. Unfortunately, it was later blown up by Big Beard.
"One seven-ring, one four-ring, one eight-ring."
Mindy put down her binoculars, looking at the darkening sky. "Brother, let's stop here for today. It's getting late."
"Okay." Mo Fei nodded. Although he was very dissatisfied with his progress in firearms, this skill depended on talent, and stubbornness alone wouldn't quickly improve it.
After casually firing a shot at the target, Mo Fei turned and walked out with Mindy.
[Shooting a handgun in broad daylight, hitting the bullseye with one shot, gained 1 experience point.]
[Firearms Lv1: Your marksmanship is so terrible it's reached a new level. Your shots are more dangerous to allies than to enemies. I advise you never to touch a firearm again in this life; firearms are not for you. What you should be doing is nursing in your mother's arms! (Experience 48/100)]
"Huh?" Mo Fei was surprised. Could it be that hitting a Ten Rings shot directly added one experience point?
To verify his guess, Mo Fei quickly ran towards the target.
"Eh?" Mindy blinked, watching Mo Fei's retreating figure, wondering what was wrong with him now?
Under Mindy's speechless gaze, Mo Fei held the gun to the bullseye of the target and fired five or six shots in a row.
"Brother, even if you're unhappy with your progress in firearms, there's no need to act so childishly, right?" Mindy found Mo Fei adorably naive. Well, this was indeed the brother she knew.
"No?"
Mo Fei was a little disappointed. It seemed the silly dog system wouldn't leave such a big loophole for him after all.
Mo Fei was driving the car, heading home.
"Brother, don't be too anxious. Although your firearms talent seems a bit weaker than your combat talent, it's already very good! When I was training, my progress couldn't even compare to yours!" Mindy secretly glanced at Mo Fei's expression, comforting him.
"Anxious? I'm not very anxious, am I?" Mo Fei looked bewildered.
Mindy pursed her lips, secretly chuckling. I see you're almost hallucinating, and you're still not very anxious?
However, she didn't expose Mo Fei, and changed the subject… "How unlucky." Mo Fei threw a jade pendant of mixed quality onto the coffee table.
"Brother, forget it. Let's just consider it doing a good deed," Mindy smiled. "Just like when our parents were still around."
"That's the only way to think about it, what else can we do?"
In the afternoon, Mo Fei was seeing patients when a few thugs carried a severely injured, dying thug to his medical clinic for treatment.
It was clear from their appearance that this was the result of a gang fight, and the severely injured one even had his intestines exposed.
Mo Fei never accepted such patients. Firstly, his medical skills weren't yet sufficient to handle such injuries. Secondly, it was troublesome; if someone died there, he could easily face retaliation from the deceased's relatives and attract the attention of the Police.
The thugs even tried to hold a knife to Mo Fei's neck, forcing him to treat the injured, but soon the neighbors around taught them a lesson.
Then, the cowardly thugs all knelt and kowtowed, begging for treatment.
This scene not only gave Mo Fei a headache but also escalated the situation, which was very bad.
Helpless, he reluctantly offered assistance.
The severely injured thug was lucky. Mo Fei, who really didn't want his clinic to be involved in a death lawsuit, fed him a few carrots, and he barely survived.
But then… these thugs were also a bunch of paupers who couldn't afford the medical fees.
Mo Fei felt like he had truly been screwed over. He hadn't even had a chance to use such a miraculous medicine as carrots himself, yet he gave it to a thug, and they wouldn't even give him a hundred yuan?
You won't even give me a hundred yuan, are you even human?
However, the leading thug took out a jade pendant and gave it to Mo Fei, saying they were from the Fuqing Gang, and the jade pendant was his family heirloom. If anyone ever came to him with that jade pendant, he would definitely help with all his might.
Mo Fei felt a pain in his balls!
Crazy!
What era is this? Do you think you're in a movie? Still playing these outdated tricks, do you think I'm that stupid?
You want to use this broken jade pendant to offset your medical fees?
At least get a better piece of jade. This jade of yours probably wouldn't sell for 10 U.S. dollars.
And go to you for help with this jade pendant?
I, Mo Fei, would rather starve to death, die outside, or jump off the Empire State Building than ever use this jade pendant.
But looking at these thugs' impoverished appearance, they really couldn't come up with any money, so what could Mo Fei do?
He could only wave his hand and tell them to get lost.
